The HMG GG-C14 was prepared by pre-swelling guar gum hydrophobic modification in alcohol-aqueous solution, the optical reactive condition was determined by studying the respective influence of each condition on the performance of the resultant product, and the final product possessed an apparent viscosity of 19957mPa·s (the apparent viscosity of parent guar gum is 11764mPa·s) and a substituting degree of 0.93%. The Ft-IR spectra of GG and GG-C14 indicate the hydrophobic long chain alkyl was successfully grafted onto guar gum.

In this paper, some chalcone derivatives (C1, C2) were synthesized based on the reaction of equal amount of substituted acetophenone and substituted banzaldehyde in basic medium. Oxazine and thiazine derivatives were prepared from the reaction of chalcones (C1-C2) with urea and thiourea respectively in a basic medium. Pyrazole derivatives were prepared based on the reaction of chalcones with hydrazine mono hydrate or phenyl hydrazine in the presence of glacial acetic acid as a catalyst. The new synthesized compounds were identified using various physical techniques like1 H-NMR and FT-IR spectra.

In this paper synthesis and characterization of YAG powders, prepared by a process based on complexing properties of citric acid, was reported. Influence of citric acid estrification induced by 2-propanol or ethylene glycol on the system homogeneity was investigated. These reagents were introduced to aqueous solution of yttrium and aluminium nitrates. A variety of powders from Al2O3-Y2O3 system with different phase composition were obtained by altering the citrate to nitrate ratio. Evolution of the powders phase composition vs. temperature was investigated using DTA/TG, XRD, and FT-IR methods. The most interesting results were observed in case of the citric acid - propanol - relative nitrates system. The mole ratio of these reagents equal to 1: 2.5: 2.5 (nitrates (Al,Y): citric acid: 2-propanol) allowed to synthesize pure YAG phase powders at temperature as low as 950?C.

Fluorescent nano-/microrods of the polyoxometalate (POM) K4H[Eu(α-SiW11O39)- (H2O)2] ・ 17H2O were obtained in aqueous solution by a conventional synthesis method. The nano-/microrods have been characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR, UV/Vis, and TG-DTA data, and their morphology was examined by ESEM-FEG, showing that the average ratio of diameter to length is 1 : 20. The obtained nano-/microrods exhibit a regular profile and an intense fluorescence.

Novel polymers with imide and ether were synthesized by pyromellitic dianhydride and Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 4,4'-metylenedianiline (MDA), amino-teminated polyoxypropylene (D2000). The structures and thermostability of polymer were characterized through FT-IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differental scanning calorimetry (DSC), solubility behavior was determined via seven solvents. The results indicate that these polymers have good chemical resistance and exhibit excellent thermostability owing to the introduction of imide units.

A series of superabsorbent hydrogels were prepared from acrylamide and carrageenan by gamma irradiation at room temperature. Carrageenan solutions with different concentration (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%) have been blended with 5% of acrylamide and irradiated at doses 20-40 kGy. The properties of the prepared hydrogel were evaluated in terms of the gel fraction and the kinetics swelling was studied. It was found that the incorporation only 2% carrageenan (kappa) with 5% acrylamide can produces an elastic hydrogel when irradiated with gamma rays up to 40 kGy. Under optimum conditions, poly(acrylamide)-carrageenan hydrogels with gel fraction ~ 60% and optimum swelling 250 g/g were prepared gamma radiolyticcally from aqueous solution containing 5% acrylamide and 2% carrageenan at the doses 20-40 kGy. The FT-IR spectra indicated that network of irradiated PAAM-carrageenan hydrogel was in the semi IPN structure. The hydrogels were also found to be sensitive to ionic strength of the medium, pH and temperature.   Keywords: carrageenan, acrylamide, irradiation, superbasorbent, crosslinking

Three new extractants for palladium(II) extraction: bis(noctyl-Sulfinyl-ethyl) ether(L1), bis(isooctyl-Sulfinyl-ethyl)ether(L2), bis(isooctyl-Sulfinyl-ethoxy)ethane(L3) were synthesized. Micro-analytical data, elemental analysis, 1HNMR and IR-spectra were used to confirm the structures. Based on independent extraction experiments of Pd(II) , the extraction parameters of Pd(II) were studied in detail, and the optimal extraction parameters were obtained and summarized as the following: H+ concentration of aqueous phase 1.0-1.5 mo1·L-1, sulfoxide extractants concentration 0.01-0.1 mo1·L-1. The order of the extractability of the three extractants towards palladium(II) was L2>L3>L1. The coordination number was studied by the slope method. The results indicated that, in low acidity, the coordination number for extracting palladium (II) was 1.0 with all three extractants, while it was 2.0 in high acidity. FT-IR spectra was used to analyze the structure of the complex. Palladium (II) was coordinated with the oxygen atom in S=O group of the three extractants. and palladium (II) may also coordinated with the oxygen atom in C-O-C group of extractant L1, L2.

Xylan is a major type of hemicellulose that has attracted a lot of research and development activities. It is often derivatized in order to improve its properties. In the literature, hydrophobic modification of polymers is often used to produce surfactant-like materials and associative thickeners. In this work, we have derivatized xylan with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and two types of alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASAs). The xylan-AKD derivatives have been made at 90 °C, using dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent and 4-dimethylaminopyridine as promoter. Samples with degrees of substitution (DS) up to 0.006 have been produced. The xylan-ASA derivatives have been synthesized at 120 °C in dimethyl sulfoxide with DS up to 0.105–0.135. The structures of these products have been confirmed with NMR and FT-IR. These xylan derivatives increase the structural diversity of xylan and provide additional options for people seeking to use hydrophobically modified polysaccharides in their applications.

Zirconia-graphene composite (ZrO2-G) has been successfully synthesized via decomposition of ZrOCl2•6H2O in a water-isopropanol system with dispersed graphene oxide (GO) utilizing Na2S as a precursor could enable the occurrence of the deposition of Zr4+ and the deoxygenation of GO at the same time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to characterize the samples. It was found that graphene were fully coated with ZrO2, and the ZrO2 existing in tetragonal phase, which resulted in the formation of two-dimensional composite.
