In the present work, the study of semiconducting Ce(1-x)MXO2 (M=Ru, In) solid-solutions nanostructures with application to gas sensors is addressed. Nanostructured powers were prepared by means of the sol-gel route. The electrical resistance of obtained materials under different conditions of time, concentration and temperature in CO presence was tested. These systems were characterized using x-ray diffraction, SEM microscopy and surface area measurements. The solid solutions demonstrated good sensorial response at low temperatures, as well as fast response as a function of time. Our results show that these novel materials can be potentially applied as gas sensors.

We adopted the sol–gel and hydrothermal methods to prepare the TiO2 nanomaterials doped with ZnO. We adopted X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method to investigate the materials’ structures and morphologies. The results showed that the prepared TiO2 nanomaterials had uniform size and good dispersibility. Gas sensors were fabricated and their performances in acetylene sensing were assessed. The results show that the sensor prepared with the ZnO/TiO2 nanomaterial doped with 10 wt% ZnO gave fast response and recovery times for acetylene gas at different concentrations. When the operating temperature was 280 °C, the gas sensor detected 200 ppm acetylene gas with a response sensitivity of 9.9, a response time of 5 s, and a recovery time of 2 s.

In this work ZnO nanocrystal powders have been synthesized by using Zinc acetate dehydrate as a precursor and sol-gel method. Then the products have been annealed at temperature of 200-1050°C, for 2 hours. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The morphology of refrence ZnO nanoparticles have been studied using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). During the annealing process, increase in nanocrystal size, defects and energy gap quantitative, and decrease in specific surface area have been observed.

A sol-gel method was employed to synthesise pure titanium dioxide (TiO2) and surfactant assisted TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The effect of novel surfactant viz., Lauryl lactyl lactate on photocatalytic properties of TiO2 was studied. TiO2 NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectra (DRS), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer – Emmet - Teller (BET) surface area. Anatase phase of TiO2 was confirmed by X-Ray diffraction pattern and the crystallite size was between 9–19 nm. Addition of surfactant improved the BET surface area, surface defects, while the agglomeration of particles was reduced. DRS results revealed that the addition of surfactant to TiO2 sol induced a red shift of the absorption edge which resulted in the reduction of band gap from 3.23 to 3.21 eV. These physicochemical properties of TiO2 NPs were correlated with photocatalytic degradation of phenol. About 92% of phenol degradation was observed for surfactant assisted TiO2 NPs (SA-TiO2). Salicylic acid and caffeine were also degraded using SA-TiO2 NPs.

Abstract Spinel ferrite nanoparticles can be easily retrieved and utilized for multiple cycles due to their magnetic properties. In this work, nanoparticles of a ZnxCu1-xFe2O4 composition were synthesized by employing a sol–gel auto-combustion technique. The morphology, composition, and crystal structure were examined using scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The produced nanoparticles are in the range of 30–70 nm and manifest spinel cubic structure. The nanoparticles were tested for their sensitivity to H2 and H2S gases, and the Cu-based spinel ferrite nanoparticles were found the most sensitive and selective to H2S gas. Their enhanced response to H2S gas was attributed to the production of metallic CuFeS2 that manifest higher electrical conductivity as compared with CuFe2O4. The fabricated sensors are functional at low temperatures, and consequently, they need low operational power. They are also simple to fabricate with appropriate cost.

The preparation of 70% CoFe2O4/30% SiO2(wt%) nanocomposites by sol-gel method using three short chain diols (1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol) as chelators was studied. The Fourier transformed infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns were used to confirm the formation of nanocomposites. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the chain length of the carboxylates embedded in the silica matrix influences the formation of crystallized cobalt ferrite as single phase at low temperatures. The influence of the methylene groups number in the precursors and annealing temperature on the nanocrystallite size was revealed. The stability of the obtained compounds was determined by calculation of thermodynamic parameters.

TiO2/stellerite composite photocatalysts were prepared by dispersing TiO2 onto the surface of HCl, NaOH, or NaCl treated stellerite using a sol-gel method. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). HCl and NaCl modification result in the promotion of the pore formation at the stellerite surfaces and induced the microscopic changes, while the surface morphology and structure of the stellerite were almost ruined by NaOH modification. Supported TiO2 calcinated at 200°C presented anatase structure. The photocatalytic degradation activities of TiO2 loaded HCl and NaCl modified stellerite were better than that of natural stellerite, accompanied with increasing specific surface area. On the contrary, NaOH modification induced the loss of photocatalytic ability of composite due to the generation of silicates.

The nanocrystals Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 solid solutions with various morphologies and crystal structures have been synthesized via a modified sol-gel method assisted with a template. Aerosol OT and/or ionic liquids ([MMIM]Cl] and [BMIM]Cl]) was used as a template. The characterization results of the X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and N2 adsorption at 77 K indicate that the physical properties of the solid solutions were significantly affected by the templates used and the calcination temperatures. The Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 calcined at 773 K possessed bimodal mesopores, narrow pore size distributions, and tetragonal phase.

ZnO- nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel technique from and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The synthesized samples were further modified by nanosized Pt from H2PtCl6solution through photoassisted deposition (PAD) and impregnation (Img) routes. The obtained samples were characterized by a series of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, N2adsorption, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the Pt-ZnO/ was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of phenol in synthetic wastewater under UV-irradiation. Results obtained revealed that the surface area and the photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples were increased in the order ZnO/ < PAD: Pt-ZnO/ < img: Pt-ZnO/. The surface area decreased from 480 to 460 and 450 m2/g, while the efficiency of the phenol degradation increased from 80 to 85 and 100%, with the ZnO/, Img: Pt-ZnO-, and PAD: Pt-ZnO- samples, respectively.
