Based on the mathematical similarity of the eigenvalue problem of the Reddy’s third-order plate theory (RPT) and the classical plate theory (CPT), relationships between the solutions of axisymmetric vibration or buckling of functionally graded material (FGM) circular plates based on RPT and those of isotropic homogeneous circular plates based on CPT are presented, from which one can easily obtain the RPT solutions of axisymmetric vibration or buckling of FGM circular plates expressed in terms of the well-known CPT solutions of isotropic circular plates without much tedious mathematics. Effects of rotary inertia are not considered in the present analysis. The relationships obtained from the present analysis may be used to check the validity, convergence and accuracy of numerical results of FGM plates based on RPT, and also show clearly the intrinsic features of the effect of transverse shear deformation on the classical solutions.

In this article, the effect of Pasternak foundation on free axisymmetric vibration of functionally graded circular plates subjected to mechanical in-plane force and a nonlinear temperature distribution (NTD) along the thickness direction has been investigated on the basis of classical plate theory. The plate material is graded in thickness direction according to a power-law distribution and its mechanical properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent (TD). At first, the equation for thermo-elastic equilibrium and then equation of motion for such a plate model have been derived by Hamilton's principle. Employing generalized differential quadrature rule (GDQR), the numerical values of thermal displacements and frequencies for clamped and simply supported plates vibrating in the first three modes have been computed. Values of in-plane force parameter for which the plate ceases to vibrate have been reported as critical buckling loads. The effect of temperature difference, material graded index, in-plane force, and foundation parameters on the frequencies has been analyzed. The benchmark results for uniform and linear temperature distributions (LTDs) have been computed. A study for plates made with the material having temperature-independent (TI) mechanical properties has also been performed as a special case. Comparison of results with the published work has been presented.

Free vibration analysis of the porous functionally graded circular plates has been presented on the basis of classical plate theory. The three defined coupled equations of motion of the porous functionally graded circular/annular plate were decoupled to one differential equation of free transverse vibrations of plate. The one universal general solution was obtained as a linear combination of the multiparametric special functions for the functionally graded circular and annular plates with even and uneven porosity distributions. The multiparametric frequency equations of functionally graded porous circular plate with diverse boundary conditions were obtained in the exact closed-form. The influences of the even and uneven distributions of porosity, power-law index, diverse boundary conditions and the neglected effect of the coupling in-plane and transverse displacements on the dimensionless frequencies of the circular plate were comprehensively studied for the first time. The formulated boundary value problem, the exact method of solution and the numerical results for the perfect and imperfect functionally graded circular plates have not yet been reported.

Abstract In the paper the influence function and the method of partial discretization in free axisymmetric vibration analysis of multilayered circular plates of constant and linearly variable thickness were presented. The effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia for the core as well as the facings were neglected. An analytical investigation based on the classical plate theory was made for the multilayered plate which satisfies Sokołowski’s condition. Discretization of mass and replacing stiffness of a fixed circular plate were presented. Formulas of influence matrix and Bernstein-Kieropian’s estimators for different steps of discretization were defined. The influence of variable distribution of parameters on the value of double estimators of natural basic and higher frequency of a sandwich circular plate was investigated.

This paper deals with nonlinear free axisymmetric vibrations of functionally graded thin circular plates whose properties vary through its thickness. The inhomogeneity of the plate is characterized by a power law variation of the Young’s modulus and mass density of the material along the thickness direction, whereas Poisson’s ratio is assumed to be constant. The theoretical model is based on Hamilton’s principle and spectral analysis using a basis of admissible Bessel’s functions to yield the frequencies of the circular plates under clamped boundary conditions on the basis of the classical plate theory. The large vibration amplitudes problem, reduced to a set of non-linear algebraic equations, is solved numerically. The non-linear to linear frequency ratios are presented for various values of the volume fraction index n showing hardening type non-linearity. The distribution of the radial bending stress associated to the non-linear mode shape is also given for various vibration amplitudes, and is compared with those predicted by the linear theory.

Based on the classical plate theory (CPT), we derive scaling factors between solutions of bending, buckling and free vibration of isotropic functionally graded material (FGM) thin plates and those of the corresponding isotropic homogeneous plates. The effective material properties of the FGM plate are assumed to vary piecewise continuously in the thickness direction except for the Poisson ratio that is taken to be constant. The correspondence relations hold for plates of arbitrary geometry provided that the governing equations and boundary conditions are linear. When the stretching and bending stiffnesses of the FGM plate satisfy a relation, Poisson's ratio is constant and the boundary conditions are such that the in-plane membrane forces vanish, then there exists a physical neutral surface for the FGM plate that is usually different from the plate midsurface. Example problems studied verify the accuracy of scaling factors.
