A super-absorbent polymer (SAP) is synthesized with polystyrene foam (PSF) and sodium acrylate through inverse emulsion polymerization. The influence of experiment conditions such as solvent of PS, composition of comonomers, initiator and cross-linking agent on the absorption capacity of the resins are discussed. The maximum water absorption rate of the prepared SAP is about 1600g/g.

Porous structure of the super absorbent polymer (SAP) was synthesized through inverse suspension method by adding acrylic acid (AA) and acrylic amide (AM) as monomer,N,N'-Methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as cross-linking agent, the mixed solution of methanol and ethanol as pore-foaming agent. The factors that influenced the bibulous performance of the super absorbent polymer were studied including the dosage of cross-linking agent, the dosage of pore-foaming agent, monomer ratio, revolving speed. The Internal structure and surface morphology of SAP was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It indicated that when the monomer ratio wasm(AM):m(AA)=1:2; the weight rate of cross-linking agent and pore-foaming agent were 0.06%(compared with the quality of the monomer) and 9%, the product attained the best water absorbency of 2909 g/g in distilled water, the saline absorbency was 124.5 g/g; the water absorption rate was 10. Meanwhile, SEM showed that the structure of the copolymer was full of holes.

Cassava waste pulp (CWP) contains high carbohydrates that can be modified into super absorbent polymer (SAP) through grafting and cross-linking copolymerization. Acrylamide (AM) was grafted onto CWP with ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator and N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as the cross-linker under atmospheric nitrogen. The effect of APS and MBA concentrations on water absorption capacity of saponified SAP was studied, while the evaluation of grafting ratio (GR) and grafting efficiency (GRE) was conducted on unsaponified SAP. The grafting success was indicated by the occurrence of IR peaks at wave numbers of 573, 765, 858, and 1667 cm-1. In the saponified SAP, the very intense characteristic band at 1562 cm-1 is due to C=O asymmetric stretching in the carboxylate anion. Saponification increases significantly water absorption capacity compared to that of unsaponified SAP (from 39.79 g/g to 578.23 g/g). The highest water absorption capacity is reached at 0.74% APS and 0.09% MBA. The percentage of GRE and GR tends to increase with increasing APS concentration until reaching the highest value and then decreases. Effect of MBA concentration on water absorption capacity, GR, and on GRE is similar to the effect of initiator concentration on GR and GRE.

Severe ice-snows caused break of many trees and a lot of crown debris in south China in 2008. Stem damage and crown debris. In order to determine the water holding characteristics of the crown debris, the water holding rate and water absorption rates of crown debris and litter were studied in a Cunninghamia lanceolata stand suffering from ice-snow damage occurring from January to February, 2008. The order of water-holding capacity of the components was leaves > litter > branches> stemwood > stembark in each stage of immersing water. The maximum water holding capacities of stemwood, branch, leaves, stembark and litter were 6.75, 8.13, 10.9, 2.72 and 8.22 t•ha 1, respectively. Maximum water holding rates of stemwood, branch, leaves, stembark and litter were 2271, 2144, 3199, 2800 and 3018 g•kg 1, respectively. Water absorption rate of each component sharply decreased with increasing immersed time from 0.5 to 4 hours, and then slowly decreased. The logarithm equation predicted water-holding capacity and water holding rates of crown debris and litter quite well and the negative exponential equation predicted water absorption rate within an 8.5% error.

Super absorbent polymer (SAP) and fluff pulp were used as absorbing materials, and the different SAP mass ratio and fluff pulp were applied to paper diaper absorption core layer. Then, the influence of different SAP/fluff pulp in composite core layer on the paper diapers normal saline absorption rate and topsheet run-off were studied. Results showed that SAP has a significant effect on normal saline absorbency respect to fluff pulp. When the normal saline volume increased, the paper diapers absorption rate about normal saline decreased, while the topsheet run-off increased. When the SAP mass ratio to fluff pulp was 0.5:0.5, the liquid absorbency rate was 35.23 g/g, the paper diaper average absorption rate was 3.96 mL/s, and the biggest topsheet run-off was 13.25 g.

Lowering the temperature of the road surface is one efficient way to alleviate the urban heat island effect. Therefore water-retaining asphalt mixture was produced by adding super absorbent polymer (SAP) containing cement mortar to the porous asphalt mixture. In this study, the water absorption capacity, mechanical strength and fluidity of the cured water-retaining mortar were investigated to determine the optimum SAP dosage in water-retaining mortar. Furthermore, the microstructure of the hardened water-retaining mortar was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the morphology and distribution of SAP in the final product, which may help to understand the influence of SAP on water retention performance and decipher its underlying mechanism. Compared to the raw porous asphalt mixture, the water-retaining asphalt mixture showed good moisture susceptibility (retained stability (RS) ≥ 88.2%, tensile strength ratio (TSR) ≥ 81.8%), good rutting resistance (9336–10,552 times/mm) and low temperature crack resistance (3383–3621 MPa), as well as significant cooling effects (10–12 °C). The results illustrate that the prepared SAP water-retaining asphalt mixture has good potential in reducing dust and enhancing road performance.

Water absorption capacity  of   Irind  mine pumice depending on the particle size and absorption time is presented in the  paper.  Irind pumice  is an aluminosilicate rock, with well-developed porosity, mechanical strength, high buoyancy, chemically inert, eco-friendly and  exhibits sufficient water absorption capacities. The examination of the pumice by X-ray diffractometry has shown that it is a volcanic rock and is composed of cristobalite and coesite. The following particle sizes were selected for the study: 1.5… 2.0 mm, 2.5 ... 5.0 mm.  Water absorption capacity of pumice was determined depending on the absorption period. The maximum water absorption was  observed for particle  sizes ranging from 2.5 to 5.0 mm.

Super Absorbent Polymer is a new type of functional polymer material developing at a high speed since the late 70’s. It can absorb water quickly . After absorbing water it becomes a kind of achromatic hydromel, and the absorbed should be: water is hard to remove even under pressure. As a result, it is usually referred as high-absorbent polymer, super absorbent polymer retention or super absorbent polymer unnecessary . This study is concerned methods of preparation and application areas of water absorbency, the influence of the initiating agent and cross-linking agent amount on the water absorbency. When the initiating agent, cross-linking agent ratio were respectively 0. 4% and 0. 2%, the water absorbency was highest. The reversibility of PH is also discussed, as well as the best methods of preparing high-water-absorbent resin cut this.
