An evaluation of the effect of alloying elements on the microstructure and magnetic properties of Pr15FebalCo8B7Nb0.05Mx (M = Cu, P, Gd and Ga; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) sintered magnets has been carried out. A mixture of alloys and the high-energy milling technique have been used to prepare the magnets. The alloying elements have influenced the remanence, intrinsic coercivity and particularly the squareness factor (SF). Phosphorus addition improved (BH)max (254 kJm-3 ) and SF around 10% (0.89). The same improvement addition on intrinsic coercivity was observed with Gallium (1100mT) compared to the standard composition Pr15FebalCo8B7Nb0.05 (1000mT) magnet. Comparisons between the squareness factors obtained using the J×μ0H curve profile (SF), the estimated (sf) using microstructural parameters and Sf using a (BH)max and Br correlation have also been carried out.

Nanocrystalline Fe-Co alloy powders, which were prepared by high-energy mechanical milling, were nitrided under the mixing gas of NH3/H2 in the temperature range from 380°C to 510°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to analyze the grain size and reaction during the processing. The magnetic properties of the nitrided powders were measured by Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The results show that with the appearance of Fe4N phase after nitride treatment, and the grain-size of FeCo phase decreases with the increase of nitridation temperature between 380°C to 450°C.The saturation magnetization of nitrided alloy powder treated at 480°C is about 18% higher than that of the initial Fe-Co alloy powder, accompanied by the reduction of the coercivity. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used, attempting to further analyze the effect of Fe4N phase on microstructure and magnetic properties of the powder mixtures.

Al 2 O 3-20 vol % Fe 70 Co 30 composite powders have been prepared by high energy ball milling a mixture of Al 2 O 3 powder and Fe 70 Co 30 alloy powder. The Fe 70 Co 30 alloy powder was also prepared by mechanical alloying of Fe and Co powders using the same process. The effects of milling duration from 8 to 48 hours on microstructure and magnetic properties of the nanostructured composite powders have been studied by means of X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). It was found that the nanostructured composite powder particles with irregular shapes and Fe 70 Co 30 alloy particles being embedded in them formed after 8 hours of milling. The average grain size of the Al 2 O 3 matrix reduced drastically to less than 18nm after 16 hours of milling. On the other hand, the embedded alloy particles demonstrated almost unchanged average grain size in the range of 14-15nm. Magnetic properties of the powder compacts at room temperature were measured from hysteresis curves, and show strong dependence of the milling time, with the coercivity increasing from 67.1 up to 127.9kOe with increasing the milling time from 8 to 48 hours. The possible microstructural reasons for this dependence are discussed.

(Pr0.25Nd0.75)10-xDyxFe82Co2B6(x=0~0.3) ribbons were prepared by melt spinning at 25m/s and subsequent annealing. The effect of Dy content on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the ribbons has been investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The magnetic properties related to the Dy content were characterized. Intrinsic coercivity of 598kA/m, remanence of 0.58T, and the maximum energy product (BH)max of 43kJ/m3 were achieved in (Pr0.25Nd0.75)9.8Dy0.2Fe82Co2B6 after annealing at 700°C for 10 minutes.

We reported a systematic study of the effect of Zr content on the structural and magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Sm (CobalFe0.11Cu0.10Zrx)7 alloys with x varying from 0 to 0.04. The results show that the addition of Zr greatly affected the microstructure and magnetic properties of the heat-treated ribbons. The Zr-free ribbon had crystallized as the 1:7H structure as the main phase while the ribbon with Zr addition adopted the 2:17R structure type. A Sm2Co7 phase was observed in the heat-treated ribbons when the Zr content x increased to 0.04. It is found that while the Zr content was increased from 0 to 0.04, saturation magnetization of the heat-treated ribbons was decreased from 11.9kGs to 3.3 kGs, and the intrinsic coercivity was increased from 0.07 kOe to 11.7 kOe. The highest intrinsic coercivity, Hci=11.7 kOe, was obtained in the ribbon with Zr content of 0.03.
