Abstract The effect of Mg content and milling time were investigated on the microstructure and microhardness values of Al-xMg/5Al2O3 (x = 0, 4, 8 and 12 wt %) nanostructured composite prepared via high energy milling technique. XRD results showed an acceleration of alloying process and formation of Al (Mg) ss by enhancing percentage of Mg element. Also, by increase in Mg percentage the grain size reduction was more considerable during milling treatment. Additionally, increment of the Mg content up to 12 wt%, causes the increase in micro-strain of the samples (from 0.31 to 0.82%). Increase in Mg concentration accelerates the mechanical milling process. According to SEM results a coaxial and circular morphology with a uniform distribution of powder particles has been formed. Up to 12 wt% (for each milling time), significant increase in microhardness (215 HV) was carried out due to solid solution hardening and crystallite refinement. From 10 to 15 h, a slight increase in microhardness up to 218 HV can be observed.

Due to the great potential of biocompatible cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) and 4-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SCX4) macrocycles in drug delivery, the confinement of the pharmaceutically important metronidazole as an ionizable model drug has been systematically studied in these cavitands. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements gave 1.9 × 105 M−1 and 1.0 × 104 M−1 as the association constants of the protonated metronidazole inclusion in CB7 and SCX4, whereas the unprotonated guests had values more than one order of magnitude lower, respectively. The preferential binding of the protonated metronidazole resulted in 1.91 pH unit pKa diminution upon encapsulation in CB7, but the complexation with SCX4 led to a pKa decrease of only 0.82 pH unit. The produced protonated metronidazole–SCX4 complex induced nanoparticle formation with protonated chitosan by supramolecular crosslinking of the polysaccharide chains. The properties of the aqueous nanoparticle solutions and the micron-sized solid composite produced therefrom by nano spray drying were unraveled. The results of the present work may find application in the rational design of tailor-made self-assembled drug carrier systems.

Although chitin is a representative abundant polysaccharide, it is mostly unutilized as a material source because of its poor solubility and processability. Certain specific properties, such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewability, make nanofibrillation an efficient approach for providing chitin-based functional nanomaterials. The composition of nanochitins with other polymeric components has been efficiently conducted at the nanoscale to fabricate nanostructured composite materials. Disentanglement of chitin microfibrils in natural sources upon the top-down approach and regeneration from the chitin solutions/gels with appropriate media, such as hexafluoro-2-propanol, LiCl/N, N-dimethylacetamide, and ionic liquids, have, according to the self-assembling bottom-up process, been representatively conducted to fabricate nanochitins. Compared with the former approach, the latter one has emerged only in the last one-and-a-half decade. This short review article presents the preparation of composite materials from the self-assembled chitin nanofibers combined with other polymeric substrates through regenerative processes based on the bottom-up approach.
