In order to find and repair surface damage on KDP crystal, an open computer numerical control(CNC) system has been developed. This paper introduces the hardware structure of the control system, explains the development of an open CNC system software, which has friendly human-machine interface (HMI) and can make the finding and repairing process efficiently and conveniently and also expounds the algorithm and related parameters for servo tuning. With the open CNC system, the process of finding surface damage is accomplished in 3 hours and clear images of crystal surface damage is taken by CCD. And also, with the help of the open CNC system, a 600µm-diameter, 25µm-depth Gaussian repair contour with low roughness is obtained. Experimental results prove that the open CNC system for finding and repairing surface damage on KDP crystal meets the requirement of efficient detection and ultra-precision machining.

In order to use magnetorheological finishing (MRF) to accomplish ultra-precision machining of complex curve surfaces, an open computer numerical control (CNC) system based on universal motion and automation controller (UMAC) has been developed. The paper introduces the hardware structure of the system, elucidates the control algorithm and parameters tuning of PID + velocity/acceleration feed-forward + notch filter, and explains the design of a friendly human-machine interface (HMI) to satisfy the need of actual manufacturing and complicated numerical control. With the open CNC system, a 4mm-diameter circle is polished on the MRF experimental prototype with the contour error of 1.67% and the surface roughness Ra of 1.4nm. Experimental results prove that the open CNC system for the MRF machine tool meets the requirements of ultra-precision machining.

Making a study of the design of a NC inserting PC open CNC system from the aspect of hardware and software, this paper adopted a programmable multi-axis controller (PMAC) to construct a hardware platform for the open CNC system on the mode of “PC + motion controller”. Introduction was made to a kind of way of implementation of the open CNC system. The developed system can satisfy the experimental requirements of the university’s numerical control laboratory and also be used to rebuild CNC systems.

In view of application requirements, control axes, the development cycle and other factors of open CNC machine tools, we consider the modular as the guiding ideology and propose a design method of three-dimensional engraving and milling machine based on open CNC system. In this paper we make a detailed design for mechanism structure and control system. Experiments show that this machine has milling and engraving capabilities, can process metal and non-metallic parts, which is a high efficiency, multi-function numerical control equipment.

The characteristics of open CNC system and the current several open CNC system models are introduced in this paper. In order to overcome the contradiction between the frequent changes demand and the closure of the traditional system, the open CNC system software and hardware architectures were investigated based on web-collaborative design and development, which improve the system development efficiency. Using the Windows XP operating system as a software platform, the Visual C++ 6.0 object-oriented programming language is adopted to design the CNC drilling control software based on the "PC + NC" the model and modular co-design methods, which improve the openness of the CNC system.

Short Electric Arc Machining (SEAM) tools were devised for cutting high hardness and strength conductive material. For solution of short electric arc mechanism research and the needs of numerical control melt application, it was necessary to develop a short electric arc CNC machining. The paper introduced the peculiarity and types of the numerical control system’s software and hardware in nowadays. For the development requirements of high-performance, open CNC system. A reconfigurable and modular upper control software architecture of open CNC system is proposed based on PC+I/O card architecture and Linux software platform. Through this architecture users can quickly customize and develop the required CNC software. Structure model of module with three different levels and each module interfaces are mentioned. Basic consist of upper control software which is achieved by these structure model are introduced. Upper control software modules and communication mechanisms are described. Upper control software of the architecture is achieved on Linux operating system, and the simulation results is given.

PC-based software computer numerical control (CNC) system is the ideal for open CNC system, but there are some problems about the current open CNC system, such as the limitation of interpolation cycle, demanding on high-speed and high precision machining and the limitation of operation system (OS). So advances a novel PC-based architecture for compiled-type software CNC system, in the architecture, the general Windows is adopted as CNC platform and adopts two huge memories acting as data buffer to solve real time problem. And then analyzes the structure and basic principle of compiling system. The hardware has been developed based on this architecture and applied in the CNC system.
