A new and facile method for improving the procedure of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film preparation was presented, which was based on an electrochemical detachment procedure. The detachment and pore-opening were performed just through one step in a solution of HClO4and C2H5OH at a voltage of 40V. The as-obtained AAO film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probing microscopy (SPM). The process of detachment and pore-opening was also discussed.

Microtubules are an interesting type of microstructure that resemble miniature drinking straws. Such tubular microstructures are found in nature. In addition, we and others have been investigating strategies for making synthetic analogs. We are especially interested in the idea of making metal microtubules. Four procedures for preparing metal microtubules are described in this paper. The general approach, called template-synthesis, entails using the pores in a microporous membrane as templates for forming the tubules. Microporous anodic aluminum oxide membranes and nuclear track-etch membranes are used as the template membranes. Gold and silver microtubules are made with outer diameters as small as 200 nm. These microstructures are characterized by scanning electron microscopy.

The reactions were carried out by decomposing acetylene at 700 °C in a two-stage furnace system under different conditions. In the two furnaces, an AAO template with the average diameter about 50 nm was placed respectivly, whose temperature was designed to be 700 °C. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results show that when the reaction was carried out in C2H2-Ar atmosphere, dense and entangled CNTs with diameter, ca. 50 nm were obtained on the top surface of the AAO template in the first furnace and dense and entangled CNTs with morphology of rope were obtained on the top surface of the AAO template in the second furnace. When the reaction was carried out in C2H2- H2-Ar atmosphere, dense and entangled CNTs with diameter, ca. 50 nm were obtained on the top surface of the AAO template in the first furnace, however only a few CNTs were obtained in the second furnace. When the reaction was carried out in C2H2- H2 atmosphere, CNTs were both observed stood on the top of AAO template in the two furnaces
