The objective of this study was to evaluate the microstructure of a ceramic based on yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) in blasting with aluminum oxide and its effect on the sintering. 25 pre-sintered Y-TZP blocks were obtained. Ten samples were blasted with alumina, and then all samples were sintered and divided into the groups: Control-no treatment; alumina G1-blasted with alumina and sintered; alumina and Rocatec G1-blasted, sintered, and Rocatec; alumina G2-sintered, alumina blasting; alumina and Rocatec G2-sintering, alumina blasting, and Rocatec. The samples were evaluated by a scanning electron microscopy. The qualitative analysis showed that the treated samples had an increase in the surface texture and that group 1– alumina and Rocatec– presented the silica incorporation to be regular and homogeneous. It was concluded that the treatment of pre-sintered surfaces is a good alternative in the bonding strength between the Y-TZP and the resin cements.

The melamine phosphate (MP) was synthesized from melamine and phosphate acid. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) was added into the MP during its synthesis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the reaction products. The composites were prepared from polypropylene (PP) and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) additives of MP and pentaerythritol (PER). The effect of Al2O3 content on the properties of the composites was investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetry (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the LOI value of the composites could be enhanced obviously with suitable content of Al2O3. When the Al2O3 content was 6 wt% in MP, the LOI value increased to 35.5% from 31.0% for the composite without Al2O3, the amount of residual char at 600°C increased from 8.9 wt% to 13.9 wt%.

Phase equilibria of the Fe-Al-Ni-O system at 750°C were determined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer and X-ray power diffraction. 54 alloys were prepared with weighted metal and Ni2O3 powder and were annealed at 750°C for 45 days. Two four-phase equilibrium regions and three three-phase equilibrium regions were confirmed, and the boundary between spinel and corundum was obtained. Comparing with the Fe-Al-Ni-O oxidation diagram at 750°C calculated with FSstel and FToxid databases, the phase boundary of the spinel and corundum oxides from experiments was inclined to the Ni-Al side. The determined relationship between primary oxides and alloy composition in this work can be used as a reference for the preparation of the oxide film by selective oxidation.

This article focuses on the development of nanoalumina-based cement mortars for overlay applications in concrete floors. It focuses on the effect of applying aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanopowder to the cement mortar used to make the overlay, on the adhesion of this overlay to concrete substrate and on its functional properties. It was claimed that the addition of 0.5% of Al2O3 nanopowder has a positive effect on the adhesion of the cement mortar used to make the overlay to the substrate made of concrete. The prior studies performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the reason for the improvement in adhesion is the fact that cement mortar used to make the overlay with the addition of 0.5% of Al2O3 nanopowder is less porous than the reference mortar within the interphase. The article concurs that the most favorable results, in terms of lower abrasion resistance and higher subsurface tensile strength of the cement mortar used to make the overlay, are mainly brought about by adding 0.5% of Al2O3 nanopowder.

A new and facile method for improving the procedure of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film preparation was presented, which was based on an electrochemical detachment procedure. The detachment and pore-opening were performed just through one step in a solution of HClO4and C2H5OH at a voltage of 40V. The as-obtained AAO film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probing microscopy (SPM). The process of detachment and pore-opening was also discussed.
