The effect of the length and concentration of carbon fibers on the rheological, mechanical and thermal properties of high-temperature thermoplastics – polyphenylene sulfone was investigated. As fillers fibers with a length of 0.2 and 3 mm are used.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the thermo-mechanical properties of composite made from geopolymer/carbon fiber/TiO2 NPs. The composite was fabricated from geopolymer based on metakaolin added with carbon fibers as reinforcement and TiO2 NPs as self-cleaning agent. The thermal properties of the composite was examined by subjecting the samples to temperature up to 750OC for 4 hours. The mechanical properties of the resulting materials were measured by using flexural and tensile strength measurements. The experimental results showed that the compsite exhibited high temperature resistance and the addition of carbon fiber were increase the flexural as well as the tensile strength of the composite.

This work aims to explore the effect of organo-modified montmorillonite nanoclay (O-MMT) on the mechanical, thermo-mechanical, and thermal properties of carbon fiber-reinforced phenolic composites (CFRP). CFRP at variable O-MMT contents (from 0 to 2.5 wt%) were prepared. The addition of 1.5 wt% O-MMT was found to give the heat resistant polymer composite optimum properties. Compared to the CFRP, the CFRP with 1.5 wt% O-MMT provided a higher tensile strength of 64 MPa (+20%), higher impact strength of 49 kJ/m2 (+51%), but a little lower bending strength of 162 MPa (−1%). The composite showed a 64% higher storage modulus at 30 °C of 6.4 GPa. It also could reserve its high modulus up to 145 °C. Moreover, it had a higher heat deflection temperature of 152 °C (+1%) and a higher thermal degradation temperature of 630 °C. This composite could maintain its mechanical properties at high temperature and was a good candidate for heat resistant material.

In the current research, the effect of cyclic temperature variation on the mechanical and thermal properties of woven carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites was investigated. To this, carbon fiber textiles in twill 2/2 pattern were used as reinforced phase in epoxy, and CFRPs were fabricated by vacuum-assisted resin-infusion molding (VARIM) method. Thermal cycling process was carried out between −40 and +120 °C for 20, 40, 60 and 80 cycles, in order to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on mechanical and thermal properties of CFRP specimens. In this regard, tensile, bending and short beam shear (SBS) experiments were carried out, to obtain modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, flexural modulus, flexural strength and inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) at room temperature (RT), and then thermal treated composites were compared. A dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) test was carried out to obtain thermal properties, and viscoelastic properties, such as storage modulus (E’), loss modulus (E”) and loss factors (tan δ), were evaluated. It was observed that the characteristics of composites were affected by thermal cycling due to post-curing at a high temperature. This process worked to crosslink and improve the composite behavior or degrade it due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) of composite components. The response of composites to the thermal cycling process was determined by the interaction of these phenomena. Based on SEM observations, the delamination, fiber pull-out and bundle breakage were the dominant fracture modes in tensile-tested specimens.

This manuscript is dealt with the synthesis of short carbon fibers reinforced polycarbonate polymer composite by using injection modeling technique. Four different composite materials were obtained by varying the carbon fibers weight percentage of 10, 20, 30 and 40%. The synthesized carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites were characterized for their morphological, mechanical and thermal properties by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), universal testing machine (UTM) and IZOD strength test. The resultant carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites exhibited excellent interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and polycarbonate resin. The tensile properties were observed to be monotonically increases with increasing carbon fiber content in the composite resin. The tensile strength of carbon fiber/polycarbonate composites with the carbon fiber content 40% were increased about 8 times than that of the pristine polycarbonate matrix. The carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites with 40 wt.% of short carbon fibers exhibited a high tensile strength and thermal conductivity. The incorporation of carbon fiber in to polycarbonate resin resulted in a significant enhancement in the mechanical and the thermal behavior. These studies suggested that the short carbon fiber incorporated polycarbonate composite matrix is a good candidate material for many technological applications.

The paper studies new high-temperature thermoplastic impregnated unidirectional carbon fiber composites. The research focuses on the effect of thermal and chemical oxidation of the carbon fibers surface on the interfacial interaction between fibers and polysulfone and polyphenylene sulfide as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The research reveals the interaction between carbon fibers and the polymer matrix depend both on the type of surface treatment and nature of the polymer. The chemical oxidation of carbon fibers results in good interfacial interaction, and the best mechanical properties were observed for tows impregnated with polyphenylene sulfide.
