The constrained growth was observed during the formation process of the photonic crystals from the monodispersed PMMA colloidal microsphere and a controllable vertical deposition (CVD) technology was developed to prepare the photonic crystal based on these growth behaviors and the PMMA colloid particles with size of 345nm were assembled into the 3-D arrays. The transmittance spectrum of the typical sample exhibited an enlarged transmission mode. Their SEM observation revealed that the bulk structure of the crystalline array had a high periodical and long range order, the perfect order zone was above 20μm and the surface of the crystal was complete flat and had only two vacancies in the 35 μm order zone. The growth interface analysis indicated that the colloidal spheres sedimented subsequently and the drying front between the suspension and crystal moved at a constant velocity with time. The crystals developed by the continuous growth mechanism and the growing crystals had rough interface during the process of controllable vertical deposition.

This paper introduces a method of preparation of photonic crystals with non-magnetic ellipsoid as building blocks. Under the condition of above its glass-transition temperature, monodispersed polystyrene (PS) spheres with the diameter of 260 nm and 360 nm were respectively elastic stretched by applying external force with different values to get different ellipsoids with different aspect ratios. The assembly procedure was carried out by applying the vertical deposition self-assembly method in a magnetic field under the guidance of magnetic fluids. In this paper, We report the crystalline structure with long range order.

NiO-SiO2 composite photonic crystals were fabricated by the self-assembly and the spin coating method. First, the SiO2 monodisperse colloidal spheres were fabricated by the Storber method and the opal structure was obtained by the vertical deposition method. After spin coating and sintering, the electrochromic material NiO was infiltrated in the opal template. The obtained NiO-SiO2 composite photonic crystal was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the morphologies of SiO2 opals and the composite structures were characterized by SEM. The reflection spectra were measured and revealed that the periodic arrays exhibit a photonic band gap in the (111) direction.
