We present a production technology for multilayer vacuum plasma coatings with additional ion bombardment, which is implemented with two methods: by using the hollow cathode effect and by using the self-maintained discharge generated by the plasma generator. Based on this technology, a technology of producing multilayer coatings based on TiN was developed.

The self-lubricating composite films were deposited on Inconel 718 by Hollow Cathode Plasma Jet (HCPJ). These composite materials consist of chrome nickel alloy matrix and Ag, BaF2/CaF2 solid lubricants. The Cr2O3-NiCr-Ag composite thin film was crystallized and had the main peaks of Cr2O3 (012) and Ag (111). The deposition rate of 200 nm /min by HCPJ was much faster than the ordinary R.F planar magnetron sputtering. The surface roughness of coated shaft was 30 nm.

The article presents the results of the technology development for the vacuum ion-plasma coating deposition with the additional ionic bombardment. As a method to realize the additional ionic bombardment, use of the hollow cathode effect or non-self-maintained high-current discharge generated by the plasma source with an incandescent cathode (PSIC) is suggested. The technology of synthesis of protective coatings with the submicrocrystalline structure was developed.

Vacuum plasma sprayed (VPS) Ti coatings were deposited and their surface modification processes were performed by NaOH solution treatment and alkali-heat-calcification respectively. The simulated body fluid test indicated that apatite was formed on the surfaces of Ti coatings. A net-like structure was observed on the surfaces of Ti coatings treated by alkali-heat-calcification, whose bioactivity is much better than that treated by NaOH aqueous solution simply.
