AbstractThe taxonomy of the Nearctic genus Ophraella Wilcox is revised. Data for all known immature stages are included. Ophraella integra (LeConte) is synonymized with O. notulata (Fabricius). Ophraella dilatipennis (Jacoby) is transferred to the genus Neolochmaea Laboissière.Thirteen species are recognized, of which 6 are new : O. arctica, californiana, communa, macrovittata, nuda, and pilosa. The distribution and host plants of species are as follows : O. americana, eastern North America, on Solidago spp.; O. pilosa, transcontinental along the Canadian border, on Aster, primarily A. macrophyllus; O. cribrata, coast to coast in the United States, on Solidago of the subgenus Virgaurea; O. conferta in northeastern states, on Solidago with preference for S. canadensis and S. rugosa; O. sexvittata in southeastern states, on Solidago spp.; O. notulata in eastern US and Gulf states to Mexico, on Iva oraria; O. notata in eastern portion of the United States, on Eupatorium perfoliatum; O. macrovittata in the Gulf states, host plant unknown; O. communa in North America and Mexico, on Ambrosia artemisiifolia; O. bilineata in the Canadian Prairies and the bordering states, on Chrysopsis villosa; O. californiana in California and Mexico, on Artemisia Douglasiana; O. nuda in Alberta, host plant unknown; and O. arctica in tundra zone, on Solidago multiradiata scopulorum.The life cycles of most species are still unknown but most species probably have only 1 generation per year. The eggs are laid in clusters on the under surface of young leaves. The larvae skeletonize young leaves and live exposed. Before pupation, the larva spins a loose cocoon and attaches it to a leaf tip. Pupation lasts 1–2 weeks. The newly hatched adults are active on host plants until the early fall, when they enter the leaf litter for overwintering.

Phytophthora ramorum, the cause of sudden oak death on oak and ramorum blight on woody ornamentals, has been reported in ornamental nurseries on the West Coast of North America from British Columbia to California. Long-distance migration of P. ramorum has occurred via the nursery trade, and shipments of host plants are known to have crossed the U.S.–Canadian border. We investigated the genotypic diversity of P. ramorum in Canadian nurseries and compared the Canadian population with U.S. and European nursery isolates for evidence of migration among populations. All three of the P. ramorum clonal lineages were found in Canada but, unexpectedly, the most common was the NA2 lineage. The NA1 clonal lineage, which has been the most common lineage in U.S. nurseries, was found relatively infrequently in Canada, and these isolates may have been the result of migration from the United States to Canada. The EU1 lineage was observed almost every year and shared multilocus genotypes with isolates from Europe and the United States. Estimation of migration rates between Europe and North America indicated that migration was higher from Europe to North America than vice versa, and that unidirectional migration from Europe to North America was more likely than bidirectional migration.

The chrysomelid genus Dibolia Latr. is revised for North America north of Mexico. Thirteen species are recognized, 6 of which are described as new: D. californica, D. chelones, D. kansana, D. melampyri, D. obscura, and D. penstemonis. Dibolia championi Jacoby is recorded for the first time from the United States and Mexico.All species are described and illustrated, host plant records are provided where possible, and a key for the separation of the species is presented. The distribution of each species is indicated by locality records and distribution maps. A general discussion of the habits of the genus, a brief redescription of the larva of D. borealis Chev., and a brief review of the habits of this species are also included.

Abstract Over one-quarter billion hourly values of temperature and relative humidity observed at 309 stations located across North America during 1948–2010 were studied. The water vapor pressure was determined and seasonal averages were computed. Data were first examined for inhomogeneities using a statistical test to determine whether the data were fit better to a straight line or a straight line plus an abrupt step, which may arise from changes in instruments and/or procedure. Trends were then found for data not having discontinuities. Statistically significant warming trends affecting the Midwestern United States, Canadian prairies, and the western Arctic are evident in winter and to a lesser extent in spring while statistically significant increases in water vapor pressure occur primarily in summer for some stations in the eastern half of the United States. The temperature (water vapor pressure) trends averaged over all stations were 0.30 (0.07), 0.24 (0.06), 0.13 (0.11), 0.11 (0.07) °C decade−1 (hPa decade−1) in the winter, spring, summer, and autumn seasons, respectively. The averages of these seasonal trends are 0.20°C decade−1 and 0.07 hPa decade−1, which correspond to a specific humidity increase of 0.04 g kg−1 decade−1 and a relative humidity reduction of 0.5% decade−1.

This chapter addresses sod webworms, which refers to a large number of grass-infesting moths and larvae of the family Crambidae (formerly Pyralidae), subfamily Crambinae. Adults are often called lawn moths because of their habitat or snout moths because of the prominent labial palpi that extend in front of the head. Most of the turfgrass-infesting species originally were placed in the genus Crambus, which is distributed practically worldwide. About 100 species are recognized in North America. The six most important sod webworm species in the eastern temperate regions of the United States include the bluegrass webworm; the striped sod webworm; the silver-striped webworm; the larger sod webworm; the corn root webworm; and the subterranean webworm, also known as the cranberry girdler. Sod webworms restrict their feeding, with rare exceptions, to plants of the family Gramineae, and turfgrasses serve as ideal host plants. The chapter then considers tropical-region sod webworms.

Aphidius smithi Sharma and Subba Rao is the most important parasite of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphum pisum (Harris), in North America. In 1958, it was imported into the United States from India to control the pea aphid and was subsequently released and recovered in most of continental United States except the Gulf Coast States and Texas (Halfhill et al. 1972). Mackauer and Finlayson (1967) reported that the parasite was present in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia and had been released but not recovered in Nova Scotia. A. smithi has never been released in western Canada nor been found on the Canadian prairies before 1970.

This essay introduces a special issue of Nova Religio on magic and politics in the United States in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. The articles in this issue address a gap in the literature examining intersections of religion, magic, and politics in contemporary North America. They approach political magic as an essentially religious phenomenon, in that it deals with the spirit world and attempts to motivate human behavior through the use of symbols. Covering a range of practices from the far right to the far left, the articles argue against prevailing scholarly treatments of the use of esoteric technologies as a predominantly right-wing phenomenon, showing how they have also been operationalized by the left in recent history. They showcase the creativity of magic as a form of human cultural expression, and demonstrate how magic coexists with rationality in contemporary western settings.

Pentecostalism as a new wave of Christianity became more pronounced in 1970's and beyond in Nigeria. Since then scholars of Religion, History, Sociology and Political Science have shown keen interest in the study of the Churches known as Pentecostals because of the impact they have made on the society. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was established by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi in Lagos,Nigeria in 1952. After his demise, he was succeeded by Pastor Adeboye Adejare Enock. The problem of study of this research was an examination of the expansion of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to North America, Caribbean and Canada. The missionary activities of the church could be regarded as a reversed mission in the propagation of Christianity by Africans in the Diaspora. The methodology adopted was historical. The primary and secondary sources of information were also germane in the research. The findings of the research indicated that the Redeemed Christian Church of God was founded in North America by Immigrants from Nigeria. Pastor Adeboye Enock Adejare had much influence on the Church within and outside the country because of his charisma. The Church has become a place of refuge for many immigrants. They are also contributing to the economy of the United States of America. However, the members of the Church were faced with some challenges, such as security scrutiny by the security agencies. In conclusion, the RCCGNA was a denomination that had been accepted and embraced by Nigerians and African immigrants in the United States of America.
