Abstract Hydatid disease is a zoonosis caused by Taenia echinococcus. The three main varieties Echinococcus granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. vogeli are primarily found in dogs and are transmitted to man by fecal–oral route. Commonly affected organs are liver, lungs and spleen. Brain is involved only in 2-5% cases. The authors herein present two cases of giant intracranial hydatid cysts managed at department of neurosurgery, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, India.

Hydatid disease is caused by Echinococcus granulosus, which is endemic worldwide. This parasitic tapeworm can produce cysts in almost every organ of the body; however, the liver and lungs are the most frequently targeted. 37‑year-old multigravida woman with a 10-week pregnancy in whom multiple splenic and liver hydatid cysts were detected by ultrasound. All splenic and liver hydatid cysts were treated percutaneously under US guidance during the 14th week of pregnancy. The catheterization method was used in the treatment of all hydatid cysts. Alcohol was also used as scolicidal and sclerosing agent in all procedures. There were no major complications. A cystobiliary fistula developed in a hydatid cyst treated in the liver. A healthy baby was delivered vaginally at term.

Hydatid disease, mostly caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a common parasitic infestation of the liver. In this type of infectious disease, humans are an intermediate host. Although most common sites are liver (70%) and lungs (25%), this parasitic tapeworm can be seen at any region of the body. Intraperitoneal cysts are usually secondary to the rupture of primary cysts, but primary hydatid cysts of the mesentery are very rare (%2). Herein, we aimed to report a giant primary hydatid cyst in a male patient, treated surgically without any complications.

Hepatic hydatid cysts are benign cysts in the liver that are the result of parasites infection. They are caused by echinoccocus granulosis or multilocularis. They caused several symptoms like pain, obstructive jaundice, and sepsis. Hydatid cyst can be complicated to cystobiliary communication (CBC) which can be frank CBC or occult CBC. Medical, endoscopic, percutaneous and surgical treatments are different approaches to treat hydatid cyst. Here we report a case of hepatic hydatid cyst with cystobiliary communication, causing obstructive jaundice and treated with sphincterotomy and insertion of biliary stent through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Only 0.5 to 2% of hydatid cysts are localized in the skeleton and of these, 3 to 4% are found in the skull. In this paper, the authors report a case of primary hydatidosis involving the cranial vault revealed by a bulging mass of the forehead and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure that occurred in a 22-year-old woman who came from a rural area. Through this case and literature review, the authors analyse the epidemiological, clinical and radiological aspects of skull hydatidosis. They conclude that hydatid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any soft tissue swelling or osteolytic lesion in the scalp of patients living in endemic areas.

Isolated hydatid disease of the breast is a rare condition, possessing a diagnostic dilemma for the clinicians. Hydatid disease is common in endemic areas affecting most commonly the liver and lungs. Other organs rarely involved are the kidney, bone and brain. It is caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus, widely spread by cattle and sheep. Humans are the accidental host for this organism. We present a similar case of isolated hydatid cyst of the breast, which was diagnosed preoperatively and managed successfully.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease, which is most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is endemic in many parts of the world. However, Hydatid disease can occur in almost any part of the body. Isolated omenal hydatid cyst is one of the least common sites. A case of very unusual omental hydatid cyst is presented here which was diagnosed in the Department of Radiology & Imaging, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, and subsequently confirmed by histopathology. AbstractCanine echinococcosis is caused by the adult tapeworm of Echinococcus granulosus. As intermediate hosts, humans and livestock become infected following ingestion of eggs that are passed in the faeces of dogs. Mature eggs develop into hydatid cysts in different organs, leading to hydatid disease, which is a serious public health problem. In the present study, we investigated the proportion of mature eggs of E. granulosus in 140 dogs from three regions of Tunisia. The results showed the predominance of immature E. granulosus eggs in infected dogs and the occurrence of a small proportion of oncospheres. The ability of immature eggs to infect humans and livestock is discussed.

Primary peritoneal hydatidosis is an extremely rare ( 2% of all intra-abdominal hydatid disease). Peritoneal hydatid disease is secondary to liver or splenic involvement following spontaneous rupture or accidental spillage during surgery. Methods: We made a retrospective study based on the analysis of the database of the I Surgery Clinic of the University Emergency Hospital „St. Spiridon ”from Iași, with peritoneal hydatid cyst, including all the data from the medical files. Between 1991 and 2021 a total of 18 patients were operated for primary (3) or secondary peritoneal cysts (15). During the same period, 1002 cases of hydatid cyst with various locations were treated in the Iasi Surgery Clinic: 805 abdominal (714 hepatic, 43 splenic, and 18 peritoneal) and 197 extra abdominal (thoracic, cervical, muscular, retroperitoneal, etc.). The incidence of hydatid diseases has decreased over time from 35 cases per year to 18 cases per year. In the year of the COVID pandemic (2020) the incidence decreased to 10 cases per year.Most of the patients with peritoneal hydatidosis were asymptomatic or had atypical symptoms. The diagnosis was based on the preoperative history, rupture of the cysts, serology, ultrasound and computer tomography. Open surgery was the procedure of choice (16 cases) with conservative (13 cysts) and radical (3 cysts) methods. The laparoscopic approach was performed in 2 cases of primary peritoneal hydatid cysts. Results: The outcome of surgery was good without postoperative mortality or severe morbidity and the recurrence rate was 22.2%. Conclusions: Peritoneal hydatidosis is a rare disease; it is important to prevent the disease. Clinical signs and symptoms are nonspecific for a long time.We suspect this diagnosis in the case of abdominal cystic tumors especially in endemic regions. The diagnosis is made based on the history of operated hydatid disease, clinical signs, imaging and immunological tests. Total surgical excision of hydatid cysts or partial perichystectomy after evacuation of the inactivated cyst is the chosen treatment. Proper perioperative medical treatment prevents recurrence. Long-term follow-up is necessary to detect and treat any recurrence.
