The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the aircraft noise exposure, annoyance reactions and health status of the residents living within the vicinity of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA) in Lagos state, Nigeria. Aircraft noise monitoring was conducted in five locations within the vicinity (0-5Km) of MMA, and a sixth distant location (14km away). Levels of aircraft noise for all five locations within the vicinity of the airport exceeded the EPA Victoria threshold of 75 dB LAmax for the residential area (outdoor). A survey on annoyance induced by aircraft noise exposure and general health status was conducted on 450 local residents in the study locations using the International Commission on Biological Effect of Noise question and a single question that has been applied in Dutch national health care surveys since 1983 on self-reported general health status respectively. Percentage of residents within the vicinity of MMA that were highly annoyed (%HA) exceeded 15% guideline limit stipulated by Federal Interagency Committee on Urban Noise while 14.5% reported poor health status. There was a significant association between the annoyance reactions and aircraft noise levels in the study locations while the association between self-reported health status and aircraft noise levels was not significant. Taken together, the residents within the vicinity of the airport are exposed to aircraft noise levels above permissible limit which may be associated with high annoyance reaction but may not be associated with poor health rating. Evidence-based aircraft noise related policies by government are advocated.

AIM: To investigate the impact of tinnitus on professional musicians in the UK. BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the experience of sound when an external source is absent, primarily associated with the ageing process, hearing loss, and noise exposure. Amongst populations exposed to industrial noise, noise exposure and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) have been found to be the factors most associated with tinnitus. The risk of NIHL amongst professional musicians is greater than that amongst the general population, meaning they may be at increased risk of tinnitus. METHODS: Seventy-four professional musicians completed an online survey involving closed and open-ended questions, and completed the Tinnitus fuctional Index (TFI) questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of open-ended qualitative responses were used to analyse the data. RESULTS: Three themes were generated from the analysis of the responses to the open-ended questions. These themes were: (1) the impact of tinnitus on the lives of professional musicians, (2) professional musician experience of tinnitus services, support, and hearing health and safety, and (3) the support professional musicians want. The mean global TFI score for professional musicians was 39.05, interpreted as tinnitus being a moderate problem. Comparisons with general population data revealed lower TFI scores for the TFI subscales of ‘sense of control’ and ‘intrusiveness’ for professional musicians and higher for auditory difficulties associated with tinnitus amongst professional musicians. CONCLUSION: Tinnitus can negatively impact on professional musicians’ lives. There is a need for bespoke self-help groups, awareness raising, and education to prevent tinnitus and promote hearing health among musicians.

Background: Work fatigue plays a large role in all industries in terms of performance, work safety, and work productivity. Oil and gas is an industry with a high level of occupational safety and health risks. Research of work-related fatigue is needed to detect critical risk factors early in order to prevent the adverse effect of work-related fatigue. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the prevalence of work fatigue in oil refinery workers at one of the oil refinery companies in Indonesia, and analyze the factors that influence it. Design and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 224 oil refinery workers. Questionnaire and work-related fatigue scales were used to assess demographic characteristics and work-related fatigue. A medical examination was applied to assess the health status of workers based on blood pressure, body temperature, and respiratory rate. The sound level meter and heat stress meter was used to measure noise and work climate. Cramer’s V correlation was applied to identify correlations between work-related fatigue and other parameters. Results: Work-related fatigue of 100% was found among workers, with categorized as low, medium, high, and very high in 9.38, 53.57, 30.35, and 6.7% of the workers, respectively. Work-related fatigue was significantly correlated with working period (p=0.028), health status (respiratory rate) (p=0.018), noise exposure (p=0.000) and work climate/heat stress (p=0.001). Conclusion: The companies should improve the health status of workers, reduce workload for aging workers, control noise, and control heat exposure in the workplace.

Objective To review the audiological and otoscopic status of Chinese children and young adults seen at a cleft lip and palate clinic in Hong Kong and compare with previous studies of Western clinical populations. Design The hearing health status of the patients was analyzed on the basis of the results of their otoscopic, pure tone audiometric, and tympanometric examinations. The patients’ sex, age, race, and type of cleft pathology were examined for their potential relationship to hearing health status. Participants The records of 180 predominantly Chinese patients attending the Cleft Lip and Palate Centre, Prince Philip Dental Hospital/University of Hong Kong from July 1977 to December 1999 were reviewed. Results and Conclusion The results indicated 13.4% of patient ears failed the audiometric screening and 23.7% of patient ears yielded abnormal tympanometric results. Patients’ sex, age, and type of cleft pathology were found not to be related to hearing screening results. The prevalence of hearing disorder was in contrast with Western studies that show a much higher rate of audiological problems in children and young adults with cleft lip/palate. Racial factors were considered to be possible reasons for this disparity. Other factors, such as timely medical and surgical intervention, including early cleft palate repair and the insertion of ventilation tubes in cases of middle ear effusion, do not convincingly account for the study findings.

Personal listening devices (PLDs) have the potential to increase the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) for users. The present study aimed to investigate the nature and extent of the risk posed, by describing the user profile of a PLD population, identifying listening habits of that population, and examining whether PLD risk status is associated with hearing damage. A sample of 4,185 Australian PLD users completed an online survey about listening behaviors and hearing health. Listeners were characterized as low, high, or very high-risk based on daily noise dose estimates calculated from self-reported listening volume and durations. Listening patterns and hearing difficulties were examined in relation to risk status. Results indicated differences in listening volumes and durations with respect to age, with higher listening volumes reported for environments with greater background noise. Fifteen percent of participants' usage was classified as posing a potential risk to hearing, with a significantly greater proportion of younger people in higher-risk categories. Forty-one percent of participants reported feeling they have a hearing loss, with ∼20% reporting difficulties with speech in noise. For 18- to 35-year-olds, higher-risk status was associated with a greater proportion of self-reported hearing difficulties, including perceived poorer speech perception. These results have implications for hearing health promotion activities and suggest that messages should focus on either volume levels or durations depending on the particular activity in which the PLD is used. In addition, the results underline the importance of placing PLD exposure in the context of individuals' wider noise exposure. Although PLD use alone is not placing the majority of users at risk, it may be increasing the likelihood that individuals' cumulative noise exposure will exceed safe levels.

BACKGROUND: Occupational noise exposure in workplaces is the most common detrimental factor that has the greatest impact on the health of people working there. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate occupational noise exposure and its relation to the general health status in industrial workers in Sanandaj, Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the general health of 500 male-workers in Sanandaj using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). Likewise, occupational noise exposure was measured based on sound pressure level (SPL) and dosimetry in the work and rest conditions of workers. RESULTS: The results showed poor general health status of workers, exceeded the daily working hours and also the standard range of sound. A significant correlation was found between general health and its dimensions with indicators of workplace sound pressure levels (P <  0.05). This means that with the increase in sound pressure level is worse general health status. CONCLUSION: It seems that the health of workers in these industries is an inappropriate process due to exposure to occupational noise exposure and poor conditions of the workplace. A high percentage of them will lose their health in case of non-implementation of prevention programs and health in the workplace in the future.
