Effect of postpartum nutrition and cow body condition at parturition on subsequent performance of beef cattle

Seventy-two cows were used in each of 2 yr to study the effect of body condition (BC) and postpartum grain feeding on cow and calf weights and on reproductive traits. Cows reached a BC score of 4 or 6 by parturition and were fed 0 or 4 kg mixed grain d−1 during the postpartum period. All cows were fed grass silage throughout the trial. Grain feeding had no effect on weight gains but increased BC of the lactating cows. Presence of ovarian follicles, uterine involution and pregnancy rate were the only reproductive parameters generally affected by grain feeding. Body condition score had no effect on calf performance, but an increase in BC at parturition yielded an improvement of most of the reproductive traits measured. No interaction was observed between BC and postpartum grain feeding, suggesting that all cows responded similarly to the treatments. Under the conditions of this trial, it was shown that BC at parturition was an important factor affecting cow performance, but the reproductive intervals were directly related to the physiological state of the cow at the beginning of the breeding season. Abstract Foot soundness is essential for optimum performance in beef cattle. When evaluating foot soundness, emphasis is placed on foot angle (FA) and claw set (CS). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of foot angle and claw set scores on cowherd performance. Data were collected on 491 crossbred Angus-based cows over a three-year period. At weaning, FA and CS were evaluated according to American Angus Association guidelines. Scores are based on a nine-point scale, where a score of one indicates straight pasterns and short, divergent toes, and nine indicates weak, sunken pasterns and long, curled toes. Cows that exhibited scores ranging from four to six were considered acceptable. If either score fell outside this range, the cow was considered undesirable. Acceptable and undesirable cows were evaluated for performance traits including pre-breeding body weight (PBW), pre-breeding body condition score (PBCS), cow body weight at weaning (CWW), cow body condition score at weaning (WBCS), pregnancy rate, 205 d adjusted weaning weight (AWW), and weaning performance (WP). Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Significance was declared at P ≤ 0.05. There were no differences (P ≥ 0.19) for WP, PBW, PBCS, CWW, or pregnancy rate. Cows with acceptable foot scores had a WBCS 5.49% greater (P < 0.001) than undesirable cows. Acceptable cows possessed an average WBCS of 4.9 compared to 4.6 in undesirable cows. Acceptable cows weaned calves 3.39% heavier (P = 0.024) compared to undesirable cows. Acceptable cows weaned calves with a mean AWW of 216.67 kg compared to undesirable cows with a mean of 209.56 kg. The results from this study suggest that cows with acceptable foot scores may maintain more desirable BCS and wean heavier calves. These results could be used to help predict cow performance based on FA and CS.

The prolonged interval from calving to first ovulation in beef cows is primarily due to the suckling-mediated inhibition of pulsatile LH release. Undernutrition both before and after calving also suppresses LH release, reduces ovarian follicular growth and delays ovulation. The interactive effects of these factors on the interval from calving to first ovulation in beef cows were quantified by studying the incidence of ovulation, following acute calf isolation and once-a-day suckling (restricted access), after emergence of the fourth follicular wave post partum in cows in differing body condition at calving and offered low or high planes of nutrition after calving.The experiment was a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design, in which the factors were body condition score at calving (Low v. Moderate), feeding level after calving (0.6 v. 1.0 MJ ME/d/kg M0.75), and restricted (once-a-day) v. ad libitum access and suckling. The experiment, duplicated at each of the four participating sites, involved 16 Simmental, 16 Sarda, 16 Brown Swiss and 16 Hereford x Friesian multi-parous cows. Follicle growth was monitored daily from day 21 post partum until the earlier of second ovulation or Day 90 post partum using transrectal ovarian ultrasonography.

The aim of the present study was to determine the production response of triplet-bearing ewes and their lambs to two differing feeding treatments in mid to late pregnancy and to determine the effect of ewe body condition. Ninety-two days after the start of their breeding period (P92) triplet-bearing ewes, were allocated to either a Medium (n = 72) or ad libitum (‘Adlib’, n = 72) feeding treatment until P113, followed by both groups being merged and offered ad libitum feeding conditions until lambing. The Medium feeding treatment was designed to ensure pre- and postgrazing herbage masses were below 1200 and 1000 kg DM/ha, respectively. Each feeding treatment included ewes from the following body condition score groups: 2.0 or less (CS ≤2.0), 2.5 (CS2.5) or 3.0 or greater (CS ≥3.0). At P113, Medium ewes were lighter (P < 0.05) and had lower (P < 0.05) body condition scores than Adlib ewes (72.4 ± 0.80 vs 75.2 ± 0.85 kg and 2.8 ± 0.06 vs 3.3 ± 0.06, respectively). However, at P141 liveweight no longer differed (P > 0.05, 86.2 ± 0.94 vs 86.6 ± 0.99 kg, respectively), although a small difference in condition score remained (P < 0.05, 3.0 ± 0.07 vs 3.3 ± 0.08, respectively). Ewe feeding treatment had no effect (P > 0.05) on lamb liveweight or survival or ewe liveweight and body condition during lactation. Ewe body condition score group had no effect (P > 0.05) on lamb birthweight. Lambs born to CS2.5 group ewes were heavier 70 days after the midpoint of lambing (L70) than those born to CS ≤2.0 group ewes (20.9 ± 0.41 vs 19.6 ± 0.36 kg, respectively), although they displayed lower survival to L70 (56.0 vs 69.5%). Liveweight at L70 and survival of lambs born to CS ≥3.0 group ewes (20.0 ± 0.39 kg and 61.7%) did not differ (P > 0.05) from those born to either CS ≤2.0 or CS2.5 group ewes. In conclusion, these results suggest triplet-bearing ewes can be maintained under restricted feeding conditions until at least Day 113 of pregnancy without negatively affecting ewe or lamb performance when they are subsequently offered unrestricted feeding for the remainder of pregnancy and during lactation. Under these grazing conditions the body condition of triplet-bearing ewes had little to no effect on their subsequent performance or that of their lambs.

The present study was carried out from selected areas at Rajshahi district to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy cows in relation to breed/genotype, age, parity, body weight and body condition. A total of 500 cows selected and data were collected directly from the dairy farms owner by using pre-tested questionnaires during the period from September 2013 to December 2014. The average reproductive performance (RP) were recorded as age at puberty (AP) 26.42±0.22 m, age at first calving (AFC) 35.48±0.22 m, post-partum heat period (PPHP) 121.85±3.48 days, service per conception (S/C) 1.93±0.04, days open (DO) 136.80±3.57 days and calving interval (CI) 401.04±3.94 days. Genotype had significant effect (P<0.05) on all the reproductive traits except on S/C. Local (L) × Holstein Friesian (HF) genotype showed earlier AP and AFC than L× Sahiwal (SL) and L. Age group had significant (P<0.05) effect on AP, AFC and other parameters were not significant (P>0.05). Middle age groups of cows had shown better RP than others groups. Parities of cows had significant effect (P<0.05) on PPHP, S/C, DO except on AP, AFC and CI. Third parity had better RP than others. The best RP was found in >300 kg BW groups. Body condition score had significant effect (P<0.05) on all RP. Good body condition score (BCS) had excellent RP. Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.7(3): 481-495,  December 2020

Dairy cows exhibit low concentrations of plasma progesterone during the summer. The effect of exogenous progesterone supplementation postinsemination (AI) in the summer on conception is equivocal. Moreover, the variability among studies in thermal stress severity contributes to the variable effect of exogenous progesterone on summer fertility. This study examined the effect of supplementing exogenous progesterone post-AI during the summer and autumn on conception rate of lactating cows that were efficiently cooled during the hot season. The study was conducted in Israel on 2 commercial farms of high-milk-producing cows, yielding, on average, 41.3 kg of milk day–1 around AI (124 days postpartum). These farms were equipped with efficient cooling systems along the feeding line and in the holding area. Mean body temperatures during the afternoon and evening hours in summer (air temperature and relative humidity of 30 to 32°C and 41 to 57%) were 39.1 ± 0.1°C, with a peak value of 39.5°C. Cows at first, second, or third AI that were inseminated after estrus (Day 0; detected by visual observation and computerized pedometric system; Afimilk, Israel) from July to August (summer) or September to October (fall) were included in the study (n = 377 cows). Treated cows (n = 181 cows) were fitted with an intravaginal device containing progesterone (CIDR) on Day 5 ± 1 after AI for 12 days; the device was removed on Day 17. Administration of the CIDR increased progesterone concentration by 2.3 ng mL–1 (P < 0.05). Conception rates were analyzed by a logistic regression procedure. Overall, the CIDR treatment increased conception rate by 6% compared with controls (39 v. 33%; NS). Day of CIDR insertion tended to affect conception rate (43, 39, and 34% for Days 4, 5, and 6, respectively; NS). The CIDR treatment significantly increased, compared with the control (+23%, P < 0.05), the conception rate of cows with a low body condition score at peak lactation (49.3 v. 26.6%). Similarly, the CIDR significantly increased (+22%, P < 0.05) the conception rate of cows that exhibited a uterine disorder at parturition (46.3 v. 24.6% in untreated control cows). The CIDR treatment also increased conception rate (NS) in the fall (+13%) in mature cows (+8%) and in the first AI (+12%). Similarly, cows treated with a CIDR before Day 120 postpartum, or cows yielding less than 40 kg of milk day–1 exhibited a numerically higher (+8%; NS) conception rate. Results indicated that exogenous progesterone administered post-AI increases conception during the summer and autumn in efficiently cooled cows during the hot months. The most beneficial effect was documented in cows that had been diagnosed as having a uterine disease postpartum, and in those that exhibited a low body condition score.

ABSTRACTForty-eight Hereford × Friesian and Blue Grey cows ranging in body condition score from 1·75 to 4·0, 12 weeks before calving, were fed to achieve three levels of body condition score at calving. Half the cows were fed on an increasing plane of nutrition as pregnancy advanced and half were fed on a flat-rate feeding system. The condition scores achieved by the three groups at calving were 2·28, 2·47 and 2·70 (s.e.d. 0·071; P < 0·001). Differences in cow body condition at calving were reflected in cow live weight and condition 6 weeks later, but there was no effect on calf performance. Hereford × Friesian cows lost more weight in early lactation, tended to produce more milk and their calves were heavier. Pattern of feeding had no effect on cow condition score or weight at calving or on subsequent performance.It was calculated that each unit of body condition-score loss in late pregnancy contributes the equivalent of 3200 MJ dietary metabolizable energy while 6600 MJ dietary metabolizable energy are required for 1 unit of condition-score gain.
