The antioxidant activities and the contents of total soluble phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins were studied in wild and cultivated lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.). The antioxidant properties of wild clones were much higher than those of the cultivars. The levels of antioxidant compounds were positively correlated with latitude, altitude, reduced temperature and increased precipitation of the collected sites.

Aging is one of the main risk factor for the onset of cardiovascular diseases; one of the possible explanations could be linked to the age-associated overproduction of free radicals. This increase of oxidative stress can be overcome with a high intake of food antioxidants. In this context, a number of studies have been addressed to assess the antiaging potential of natural antioxidant compounds. Recently, it has been shown that the juice of bergamot (Citrus bergamia Risso et Poiteau), a fruit mostly produced in the Ionian coastal areas of Southern Italy (Calabria), is a valuable source of health-promoting constituents with, among other, antioxidant properties. In order to investigate the potential antiaging effects of this Mediterranean natural antioxidant source, bergamot juices of three different cultivars (“fantastico,” “femminello,” and “castagnaro”) were herein characterized by the mean of high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. Then, juices were investigated for the evaluation of total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents, cell-free model antioxidant activities, and in vitro antiaging properties on two different cellular models of induced myocardial senescence. The best performing juice was also assessed in vivo. The phytochemical profiles confirmed that juices were rich in flavonoids, both flavone and flavanone glycosides. In addition, two limonoid glycosides were also identified in all cultivars. Each cultivar showed different phenolic and flavonoid contents. In tube results showed the juice robust antioxidant activities that correlate with their phenolic and flavonoid contents. Moreover, for the first time, the ability of juice to counteract the chemical-induced senescence was here demonstrated in both cellular models. Lastly, the in vivo data obtained from mouse hearts evidenced an increase in transcription of genes involved in antiaging and antioxidant responses. The overall results suggest that bergamot juice exerts antioxidant and antisenescence effects, making it useful for nutraceutical purposes.

Methanolic extracts (MEs) of seven brown seaweeds occurring in the Indian coastal waters were screened for their cytotoxic and antioxidant properties following various assays. The methanolic extracts of seaweeds in the order ofDictyopteris australis > Spatoglossum variabile > Stoechospermum marginatum > Spatoglossum aspermumshowed significant cytotoxic activity. A very high DPPH radical scavenging activity was exhibited by the methanolic extracts prepared fromSt. marginatum, Padina tetrastromatica, Dictyopteris delicatulaandS. aspermum. The total phenolic content of the MEs varied from 13.19 ± 0.32 to 25.29 ± 0.445 gallic acid equivalents (mg g−1of methanolic extract). The reducing power assay indicated a dose dependency, at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 and 2.0 mg mL−1of MEs and decreased in the following order:Butylated hydroxy toluene > P. tetrastromatica > D. delicatula > S. aspermum > S. variabile > S. marginatum > D. australis > S. marginatum. Furthermore,D. australis,S. aspermum, S. variabileandS. marginatumdemonstrated good metal ion chelating properties. All the above evidences suggest that, the antioxidant compounds found in brown seaweeds scavenge free radicals through effective intervention. This decisively promotes them as a potential source of natural antioxidants.

SummaryIntroduction: Seasonings added to food enhance its flavor and texture. Some of them can also extend their shelf-lives thanks to the presence of antioxidant compounds. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate twenty eight commercially available spices for the total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity. Methods: Total phenols were estimated according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Antioxidant activities of the extracts were determined with DPPH assay. Results: Our results showed that the most of analysed spices are rich in phenolic compounds and demonstrate good antioxidant activity. The total polyphenol content oscillated around 0.9-155.1 mg GAE/g with the lowest value for sesame and the highest for cinnamon. The DPPH radical scavenging ability expressed as % ranged from 4.1% for sesame to 94.9% for cloves. Moreover, a moderate correlation (r=0.63, p<0.05) was reported between antioxidant activity and total phenolics, revealing that phenolic compounds are the important antioxidant components in the examined spices. Conclusion: The study shows also that a lot of spices can serve as food preservatives and, at the same time, have a beneficial effect on human health.

The methanolic extracts of 13 accessions of purslane were analyzed for their total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), and total carotenoid contents (TCC) and antioxidant activity of extracts was screened using FRAP assay and DPPH radical scavenging methods. The TPC, TFC, and TCC ranged from0.96±0.04to9.12±0.29 mg GAE/g DW,0.13±0.04to1.44±0.08 mg RE/g DW, and0.52±0.06to5.64±0.09 mg (β-carotene equivalent) BCE/g DW, respectively. The DPPH scavenging (IC50) activity varied between2.52±0.03 mg/mL and3.29±0.01 mg/mL and FRAP ranged from7.39±0.08to104.2±6.34 μmol TE/g DW. Among all the measured micro- and macrominerals K content was the highest followed by N, Na, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Zn, and Mn. The overall findings proved that ornamental purslane was richer in antioxidant properties, whereas common purslane possesses more mineral contents than ornamental ones.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disorder that is characterized by progressive loss of the upper and lower motor neurons at the spinal or bulbar level. Oxidative stress (OS) associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and the deterioration of the electron transport chain are factors that contribute to neurodegeneration and perform a potential role in the pathogenesis of ALS. Natural antioxidant molecules have been proposed as an alternative form of treatment for the prevention of age-related neurological diseases, in which ALS is included. Researches support that regulations in cellular reduction/oxidation (redox) processes are being increasingly implicated in this disease, and antioxidant drugs are aimed at a promising pathway to treatment. Among the strategies used for obtaining new drugs, we can highlight the isolation of secondary metabolite compounds from natural sources that, along with semisynthetic derivatives, correspond to approximately 40% of the drugs found on the market. Among these compounds, we emphasize oxygenated and nitrogenous compounds, such as flavonoids, coumarins, and alkaloids, in addition to the fatty acids, that already stand out in the literature for their antioxidant properties, consisting in a part of the diets of millions of people worldwide. Therefore, this review is aimed at presenting and summarizing the main articles published within the last years, which represent the therapeutic potential of antioxidant compounds of natural origin for the treatment of ALS.

Schiff bases are chemical compounds formed from the condensation reaction of aldehydes or ketones with amines. These compounds are majorly used in industries and also have significant biological activities, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory. The majority of these compounds show excellent catalytic activities. Schiff bases are considered to be the most versatile ligands as they form complexes with the metal atoms. They are called privileged ligands because these compounds can be synthesized simply by condensation. The complexes of copper, zinc, and cadmium are the essential metallic complexes of these compounds. Schiff bases and its metallic complexes are instrumental in scavenging the free radicals and thus protect living bodies from the adverse effects of these radicals. Due to the recent exhaustive study on Schiff bases, it becomes an independent filed of research in chemistry. These compounds are widely investigated; however, the antioxidant properties of these compounds needs further investigation. In this review, we investigate various synthesis mechanisms of Schiff bases and their essential antioxidant activities. We also explore the metallic complexes of some most essential Schiff bases and their effects on living cells. The present study will be valuable to provide a foundation for antioxidant characterization of Schiff bases and for future studies on Schiff bases to synthesize high-quality antioxidant compounds.

Background: Antioxidants are the substances that interact inside and outside of a biological system against the damaging effects of highly reactive free radicals produced during metabolism. Among various natural alternative sources of bioactive metabolites, endophytic fungi have emerged as a significant reservoir of potent antioxidant compounds. These scantly explored micro-organisms are prolific producers of novel compounds and have the capability to produce metabolites that are exclusively isolated from Plantae. A wide array of compounds like nucleobases, polyketides, terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, xanthones, semiquinones, peptides, and phenolic acids have been identified as natural antioxidants produced by these micro-organisms. Methods: A detailed review of the literature published recently was undertaken using bibliographic database like Sci-finder and Google scholar. Questions to be reviewed and criteria for selection as a part of the study were fixed. The key features like information on the structure of isolated metabolites and antioxidant activities were summarised after a critical examination. A skeleton was established which gives insight into the type of novel chemical moieties which can be explored as a future antioxidant (s). Results: The review substantially covers the recently discovered compounds, in the period 2013 – 2018, having potent antioxidant activity, isolated from endophytic fungi colonizing diverse plant types such as terrestrial plants, mangrove plants and marine algae. Among the 96 compounds discussed here, thirtynine are from the first report of their occurrence. The present study reports 96 compounds obtained from 34 endophytic fungi out of which 15 fungi belonging to 13 genera of Ascomycetes produced 44 compounds, 14 fungi belonging to 5 genera of hyphomycetes yielded 33 compounds and 6 fungi belonging to 2 genera of Coelomycetes yielded 19 compounds. : The antioxidant potency of these compounds against different free radicals is briefly described and some details such as host organisms, plant sources, place of collection and the antioxidant properties of these compounds are tabulated in this review. Conclusion: Some of these free radical scavengers have shown wide applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry as potential food preservatives, nutraceuticals, antibacterial, anticancer and antifungal agents. This review aims at highlighting some of the novel compounds isolated recently from endophytic fungi, and their applications as potential antioxidant candidates.

The antioxidant activity of cookies prepared by the addition of sugarbeet dietary fibers was investigated in order to estimate their influence on functional characteristics and shelf-life of cookies. Treated fiber (TF) was obtained from sugarbeet by extraction with sulfurous acid (75 °C at pH = 5.7during 60 min) and treatment with hydrogen peroxide (20 g/LH2O2 at pH = 11 during 24 h). The fiber obtained was dried (80 °C), ground and sieved. TF was investigated in comparison with commercially available Fibrex®. The cookies were prepared by the addition of 0, 7, 9 and 11% of sugarbeet dietary fiber as a substitute for wheat flour in the formulation of cookies. The antioxidant properties of cookies were tested every 7 days using a DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity test during 6 weeks of storage at room temperature (23 ± 1 ºC). The obtained results indicated that substitution of wheat flour with Fibrex® in the formulation of cookies upgraded the antioxidant activity, i.e. the functional characteristics of Fibrex®-enriched cookies and could prolong their shelf-life. In contrast, TF did not increase the antioxidant activity of TF-enriched cookies. The better antioxidant activities of Fibrex®-enriched cookies could be attributed to the presence of ferulic acid.
