The relative short-term leaching rates of the metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn from composted sewage sludge was determined over the pH range of 2.5–7.0 at 0.5 pH unit intervals. Only Zn and Cd leached significantly faster as the pH was lowered, with both showing the greatest solubility increase over the pH range of 5.5–6.0. Municipal sewage sludge from wastewater treatment is an important nutritional source for sustainable agriculture. Here, we report on the assessment of the accumulation of heavy metals in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Trewavas 1983) fed on earthworms Eisenia fetida reared on soil treated with different concentrations of sewage sludge (25% and 100%) during sludge-earthworm-fish short-term cycling. In this short-term cycling the Nile tilapia collected from the White Nile were chosen as final consumers, whereas the earthworms reared on loam soil mixed with different ratios of sludge were used as a feed for the final consumers. Our results indicate that the concentrations of Cd2+, Cr2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ in the sludge treated soil are proportional to the sludge content in the soil. Importantly, the accumulation of these heavy metals was significantly low in the earthworms and the Nile tilapia in comparison with the treated soil and that these concentrations in the Nile tilapia were below the international limits recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency (2014). Moreover, the growth and overall flesh quality of the fish were improved as indicated by the growth increase up to 146% when fed on earthworm reared in 100% sludge. Additionally, our physicochemical properties (i.e. pH, soil moisture, electric conductivity and organic matters) evaluation on the soil indicates an improvement of the soil quality when mixed with sewage sludge. These results suggest a sustainable application of sewage sludge in fish culture owing to its high nutritional values, low cost, and low risk of hazardous heavy metals when using primary consumers with heavy metals bioaccumulation capability such as E. fetida.

E-mail: [email protected].     ABSTRACT   The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of irrigation with treated effluent of domestic origin (EET) and different doses of composted sewage sludge (CSS) on soil chemical attributes and heavy metals bioavailability after five years of application. The experimental design was completely randomized, in an arrangement of subdivided plots, with ten replications. The plots contain two types of water for irrigation (EET - treated domestic  effluent and AP- potable water)  and in subplots doses of organic compound (CSS - 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250%), whose fertilizer quantities were based on the nitrogen fertilization required for the cultures, as reference. Results showed that levels of heavy metals As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, Se and Zn did not exceed the limits and the maximum permissible content in the soil. Fertilization with composted sewage sludge associated with effluent irrigation positively impacted soil chemical quality in organic matter content, pH, bases sum (SB), base saturation (V%) and CEC. Responses obtained in this study showed a direct relationship between the type of water for irrigation and doses of compound in all evaluated parameters.   Keywords: reuse, wastewater, biosolids, sustainability.     ALVES, D. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo de parcelas subdivididas, com dez repetições. As parcelas contêm dois tipos de água para irrigação (EET - efluente doméstico tratado e AP - água potável) e nas subparcelas as doses do composto orgânico (CSS - 50, 100, 150, 200 e 250%), cujas quantidades do fertilizante foram baseadas na exigência da adubação nitrogenada para as culturas, como referência. Os resultados mostraram que os teores de metais pesados: As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, Se e Zn não ultrapassaram os limites e o teor máximo permissível no solo. A adubação com lodo de esgoto compostado associado à irrigação do efluente impactou positivamente a qualidade química do solo (teor de matéria orgânica), soma base (SB), saturação por bases (V%) e CTC. As respostas obtidas neste estudo mostraram que houve relação direta entre o tipo de água para irrigação com as doses do composto sobre todos os parâmetros avaliados.   Palavras-chave: reuso, água residuária, biossólido, sustentabilidade.

Bacterial leaching of heavy metals from sewage sludge with different iron containing compounds as energy substrates was studied in a batch system using a culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. It was proven that spent FeSO4∙7H2O and pyrite met the criteria of an energy substrate and could be substituted for reagent grade FeSO4∙7H2O. This substitution could significantly reduce energy substrate cost: 99% with spent FeSO4∙7H2O and 94% with pyrite. The solid aspect of pyrite compromises its use. Heavy metal leaching limits activated carbon from sewage sludge (referred as ACS) to be used for wastewater treatment. Cr and Cd leaching from ACS exceed the permitted values. The leaching content of Cr and Cd decrease much with depositing ACS with chitosan (CS),below the permitted values. This is mainly due to the bind of Cr and Cd with the much group –NH2 of CS. The effects of initial dye concentration, pH and contact time had been studied. The dye adsorbed can act as a supple complexion agent with increasing initial dye concentration, increase the affinity for Cr and Cd. For Cd, the amount leaching of CS/ACS or ACS remains content with pH.The amount leaching of Cr decreases when the pH from 1 to 5 and then increases above the pH of 6.0. The contact time has no important influence on the leaching contents of Cr or Cd.

The effects of the application of reed-sewage sludge compost on the heavy metal incorporation and the growth of young snails born from the adult mud snails, Cipanqopaludina chinensis malleata REEVE, put into submerged paddy soil were investigated. The biomass and growth of the snails in paddy soil with compost were superior to those in soil without compost. The Zn and Cu concentrations in the flesh portion of snails were extremely high as compared with those in the paddy soil surrounding the snails. This may be because snails ingest sewage sludge which is a main organic component of the composts and sewage sludge usually contains large amounts of Zn and Cu, suggesting that this type of snail may be useful in eliminating sewage sludge and Zn and Cu in paddy soil when composted sewage sludge has been applied.

In order to study the effect of organic matter on the heavy metals leachability from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In the project, the composted sewage sludge (CS) rich in organic matter was mixed with MSWI bottom ash in a certain proportion. e exudation test, determination of the leaching liquid pH, dissolved organic carbon and humus concentration, and the concentration of heavy metals. And the combination of CS and BA in organic compounds and metal content, calculate metal leaching rate. According to the experimental results, analysis of dissolved organic matter and humic acid concentrations and Cu and Cr leaching concentration, showed that when CS mixture ratio of 20%, organic matter and humic substances concentration and Cu and Cr leaching concentrations are highly linear correlation.

A short-term (3-day) equilibration experiment was carried out to determine the effects of 3 animal manures (poultry, pig, and cattle) added at a rate of 20 mg/g to an Oxisol on pH and the concentrations of total (AlT) and monomeric (AlMono) Al in solution. The pH of equilibrium solutions from the control, cattle, pig, and poultry manure treatments were 4.0, 4.6, 5.2, and 6.3, respectively. AlMono concentrations decreased progressively as pH increased but concentrations of AlT were similar in the pig and poultry manure treatments. Subsequent equilibration experiments examined the solubility of AlMono and AlT when the 3 manures were added to the Oxisol or a 40 um AlCl3 solution and pH was maintained at 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, and 6.5. In both experiments, addition of manures generally tended to reduce the concentration of AlT in the lower pH range (4.0 and 4.5) but increase it in the higher range (pH 5.5 or 6.0 and above). Concentrations of AlMono, and the proportion of AlT present as AlMono, were reduced over the whole pH range. Results were explained in terms of the strong bonding ability of organic matter in both the solid and solution phases for Al. At lower pH, where Al is highly soluble, complexation by solid-phase organic matter results in a reduction in both AlT and AlMono. However, at higher pH, where Al solubility becomes limited, complexation of Al by soluble organic matter becomes an important mechanism and this results in an elevation in AlT, while concentrations of AlMono remain very low. It was concluded that the effects of manures in reducing concentrations of AlMono in soil solution are attributable to both an increase in pH and the complexing ability of organic matter for Al.
