XML Solutions for Swedish Farmers
The Federation of Swedish Farmers – LRF - provides its 170,000 members with a web-based service to check compliance with existing state and EU farming regulations. These checklists are also made available as a nightly produced generic checklist document with more than 130 pages, and individualised checklists for registered members. This paper is a case study describing the XML-based system used to author, manage and publish content. The system consists of the eXist-DB, coupled with oXygen Author, used for edit, store and process the contents of the checklists and their related contents, including publishing them as PDFs and exporting them to a SQL database in charge of member registration, feeding the website, and various other tasks. The solution includes step-by-step processing of the various types of information in eXist, based on XQuery and XSLT. The system also uses XInclude modularisation, an extended XLink linkbase, as well as other markup technologies. The system currently handles a yearly volume of more than 40,000 PDF documents and many more than that in the web-based forms.
