Synthetic pesticides used to protect stored smoked and dried fish often cause enormous damageto human health and the environment. To limit the harms due to the use of these chemicals, it is necessary to find alternative methods. For this purpose, natural substances may constitute a beneficial way. The objective of this work is to study the effect of crushed fresh leaves and essential oil of Eucalyptus camaldulensis on the mortality of the larvae of an insect pest of smoked and dried fish, Sardinella aurita "Kétiakh", Dermestes maculatus (De Geer, 1774). Essential Oil was obtained by steam distillation from Eucalyptus leaves (0.8% w/w) and analyses carried out by GC/FID and GC/MS. For the biological test, fresh crushed leaves and essential oil were tested at different doses at varying treatment times again larvae Dermestes maculates. The results showed that D. maculatus was sensitive for both fresh crushed leaves and the essential oil, the efficacy of which depended on the dose and duration of treatment. The doses of 2 g and 2.5 g of freshly ground leaves showed a high efficiency of 27 to 40%, of mortality respectively. However, for the essential oil, with the increase in the duration of exposure, the highest mortality (33.3%) was recorded after 72 hours of treatment with the 40µl dose and at 120 hours with the 60µl dose. This study showed that fresh crushed leaves and essential oil of Eucalyptus camaldulensis can be considered as an alternative to the use of chemical insecticides in the conservation of smoked and dried Sardinella aurita "Kétiakh" stored in Senegal.

The objective of our study is to use the essential oil from the leaves of the plant Eucalyptus camaldulensis, which has been extracted by the hydrodistillation method as pathogenic biobactericides, biofungicides and tested the phytotoxicity potential of essential oils of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, on the germination of three species of cereal (common wheat, barley and oats). The efficacy of the essential oil of Eucalyptus camaldulensis for different concentrations of 5, 2.5, 1.25 μl on four bacterial strains (namely Staphylococcus vitulinus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus blanc, Enterobacter cloacae) and at concentrations of 60, 120, 240 μl on two fungal strains (Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium colmorum) is estimated by determining the rate of inhibition of the growth of bacteria and fungus tested. Our study (leaves appear) proved that the essential oil of Eucalyptus camaldulensis has a low activity against bacterial strains in all different concentrations, in which inhibition diameters do not exceed 5 mm. However, a good antifungal effect was manifested by what it showed a minimal inhibitory concentration (CMI) of 60 μl. Our results indicate that the extracts studied show good antibacterial and antifungal activities. In addition, the phytotoxicity test shows that the essential oil of Eucalyptus camaldulensis at a concentration of 50 μl shows a low toxicity rate on the germination of all the varieties of cereals studied: barley (Hordeum vulgare (Saida 183)), oats (Avena sativa L. subsp. Sativa (sonar)), and common wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. HD1220 (Sersou)). Therefore, all of these results obtained in vitro only constitute an outline for scientific research of natural substances for biological control.

Purpose: Alternative methods for the use of animals in research have gained increasing importance, due to assessments evaluating the real need for their use and the development of legislation that regulates the subject. The principle of the 3R’s (replacement, reduction and refinement) has been an important reference, such that in vitro, ex vivo and cord replacement methods have achieved a prominent place in research. Methods: Therefore, due to successful results from studies developed with these methods, the present study aimed to evaluate the myorelaxant effect of the Dysphania ambrosioides essential oil (EODa) using a Sus scrofa domesticus coronary artery model, and the toxicity of both the Dysphania ambrosioides essential oil and its major constituent, α-terpinene, against Drosophila melanogaster in toxicity and negative geotaxis assays. Results: The EODa relaxed the smooth muscle of swine coronary arteries precontracted with K+ and 5-HT in assays using Sus scrofa domesticus coronary arteries. The toxicity results presented LC50 values of 1.546 mg/mL and 2.282 mg/mL for the EODa and α-terpinene, respectively, thus showing the EODa and α-terpinene presented toxicity to these dipterans, with the EODa being more toxic. Conclusions: Moreover, the results reveal the possibility of using the EODa in vascular disease studies since it promoted the relaxation of the Sus scrofa domesticus coronary smooth muscle.

BackgroundEssential oil components (EOCs) are molecules with interesting application in pest control, these have been evaluated against different insect pest from more than 100 years, but their practical use is rather limited. Thus, the enhancement of their bioavailability and manageability due to their dispersion in water can open new perspective for the preparation of formulations for the control of insect pest. In this work, we studied the encapsulation of different monoterpenes in a poloxamer shell in order to prepare aqueous formulations that can be used for the development of platforms used in pest control.MethodsMicellar systems containing a 5 wt% of poloxamer 407 and 1.25 wt% of the different monoterpenes were prepared. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) experiments were carried out to characterize the dispersion of the EOCs in water. The pediculicidal activity of these micellar systems was tested on head lice using anex vivoimmersion test.ResultsThe poloxamers allowed the dispersion of EOCs in water due to their encapsulation inside the hydrophobic core of the copolymer micelles. From this study, we concluded that it is possible to make stable micellar systems containing water (>90 wt%), 1.25 wt% of different monoterpenes and a highly safe polymer (5wt% Poloxamer 407). These formulations were effective against head lice with mortality ranging from 30 to 60%, being the most effective emulsions those containing linalool, 1,8-cineole,α-terpineol, thymol, eugenol, geraniol and nonyl alcohol which lead to mortalities above 50%.DiscussionSince these systems showed good pediculicidal activity and high physicochemical stability, they could be a new route for the green fabrication of biocompatible and biosustainable insecticide formulations.

ABSTRACT Since drug-resistant nematodes became a common problem in sheep and goat industries, alternative methods using natural products have emerged as a viable and sustainable anthelmintic treatment option. Here, the in vitro effect of essential oil extracted from Lippia gracilis Schauer was assessed on the hatching process of nematodes recovered from naturally infected goats. Essential oil at concentrations of 0.08% (0.008 μL/mL), 0.12% (0.012 μL/mL), and 0.16% (0.016 μL/mL) was able to induce an average inhibition of 74.7, 84 and 93%, respectively. The effective concentration required to inhibit egg hatching in 50% of eggs (EC50) was 0.03452%. Therefore, essential oil of L. gracilis showed promisor in vitro anthelmintic results against egg-hatching of goat gastrointestinal nematodes.

In the current study the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis plants collected from five localities of the Montenegro coastline was analyzed. The oil yield varied from 0.63 % (Kotor) up to 1.59% (Tivat). The chemical composition of the leaf essential oil was analyzed using GC-MS technique. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were a major class of compounds. Among them, dominant compounds were p-cymene (17.38-28.60%), ?-phellandrene (12.35-14.47%) and ?-pinene (0.94-11.48%). The second largest group was oxygenated monoterpenes with cryptone (4.97-7.25) and terpinene-4-ol (2.75-4.21%) as predominant. Besides high content of sesquiterpene alcohol spathulenol (7.83-14.15%) was found. According to the results obtained E. camaldulensis from Montenegro can be classified in the chemotype with low 1,8-cineole and high p-cymene and cryptone ratio.

The widespread introduction of the destructive methods of treatment into the clinical practice of dermatovenerologists is caused by the significant spread of benign skin and mucous neoplasms. At the same time, any effect on the skin — chemical, physical or mechanical — causes damage. Thus, patients using these procedures need proper care for damaged skin and mucous membranes to prevent secondary infection and scaring. Disruption of the epidermal barrier after removal of benign skin neoplasms, carrying out biopsy and chemical peels always requires application of topical agents promoting full recovery of the epidermis. In addition, many skin diseases are accompanied by inflammatory reactions, which are complicated by secondary infection. The use of drugs with anti­inflammatory and reparative properties reduces the duration of treatment and promotes skin recovery.Objective — to evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of using Topicream soothing cream CICA after derma­tocosmetological procedures on the skin and mucous membranes and to investigate the efficacy of its use at various skin and mucous membranes diseases including children.Materials and methods. The study included 57 patients aged 1 to 75 years with various skin diseases, benign skin and mucosal neoplasms, after punch biopsy and cosmetology procedures. Topical application of the Topicream soothing cream CICA on the damaged skin and mucosal areas was recommended to all participants of the study twice a day. Results and discussion. The use of the regenerating cream after dermatological treatment of benign skin neoplasms with apparatus methods, chemical peelings and punch biopsy, as well as the auxiliary treatment of skin diseases such as cheilitis, herpes, perianal fissure, allergic contact dermatitis (including in children) localized in folds and on the face, contributes to a significant reduction in signs of inflammation and subjective sensations, as well as rapid healing of the affected skin surface. At the same time, there is a good tolerance and the absence of side effects of Topicream soothing cream CICA, which allows it to be widely used in clinical dermatovenerology, gynecology and pediatrics.Conclusions. High efficiency and safety of Topicream soothing cream CICA allow its widespread use in clinical practice of dermatovenerologists, gynecologists and pediatricians.

ABSTRACT The rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), is a major insect pest of stored products worldwide. In an effort to manage populations of C. ferrugineus in stored grains, the essential oil from Citrus reticulata Blanco peel was prepared by the Soxhlet method with anhydrous diethyl ether, and its contact activity, repellent activity, and fumigant activity were investigated against C. ferrugineus adults. C. reticulata peel essential oil had potent contact, repellent, and fumigant activity against C. ferrugineus adults, with activity significantly increasing with increasing exposure dosage during the same exposure time. Percent repellency values achieved >80.0% after 60 h of exposure. For contact toxicity, the corrected mortality of C. ferrugineus adults reached >99.0% after 48 h of exposure at the dosage of 2.0 μL/cm2. For fumigant toxicity, the corrected mortality of C. ferrugineus adults reached 89.0 and 100.0% at the dosages of 40 and 80 μL/L of air, respectively. These results suggest that the C. reticulata peel essential oil has strong potential for managing populations of C. ferrugineus in practice.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of essential oil (EO) ofEucalyptus camaldulensisDehnh. against fiveFusariumspp. commonly associated with maize.The essential oil had been extracted by steam distillation in a modified Clevenger-type apparatus from leaves ofE. camaldulensisand their chemical composition characterized by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Poisoned food technique was used to determine the percentage inhibition of mycelial growth, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum fungicidal concentration of the EO on the test pathogens. Antifungal activity of different concentrations of the EO was evaluated using disc diffusion method. The most abundant compounds identified in the EO were 1,8-cineole (16.2%),α-pinene (15.6%),α-phellandrene (10.0%), and p-cymene (8.1%). The EO produced complete mycelial growth inhibition in all the test pathogens at a concentration of 7-8 μL/mL after five days of incubation. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration of the EO on the test fungi were in the range of 7-8 μL/mL and 8–10 μL/mL, respectively. These findings confirm the fungicidal properties ofE. camaldulensisessential oils and their potential use in the management of economically importantFusariumspp. and as possible alternatives to synthetic fungicides.
