This study compared the interpretation results of the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) data acquired using the conventional Schlumberger and modified Schlumberger arrays with a view to assessing the effectiveness of the modified Schlumberger arrays of VES as alternatives to the conventional Schlumberger array at sites with space constraint during geophysical exploration. A total of thirty (30) VES data for both conventional Schlumberger and modified Schlumberger arrays were collected across different rock units within Federal University Oye-Ekiti campus and Irare estate in Oye-Ekiti metropolis, south-western Nigeria, with electrode spacing (

The Schlumberger array method was used to carry out a total of eight (8) Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) with a spread of 350 m in the study area. The Pasi 16-GL Terrameter was used to acquire the data. The data obtained were analyzed with the Winresist 1.0 software to obtain the curves of best fit to the theoretical models. The modeling program converted the apparent resistivity into true resistivity values in 1-D model curves. Five (5) to seven (7) layers were delineated which correspond to the topsoil, sandy clay, clayey sand, sand, dry sandstone and saturated sandstone. The depth to aquifer ranges from 95.0 to 169.6 m with resistivity values ranging from 324.3 to 1524.7 Ωm. Keywords: Apparent resistivity, Aquifer, lithology and vertical electrical sounding.

Geophysical investigation was conducted at Okada community in ovia North Local Govertment area of Edo state to determine the prospect of aquifer zone. The Petrozenith PZ-02 Terrameter, one of the Electrical Resistivity Equipment was used to conduct a Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) in the study area. The Garmin Etrex 10 Global Navigation satellite systems (GNSS) was used to acquire Geodetic coordinates of point where VES observations were made. This research was carried out as a pre-drilling Hydro-geophysical survey conducted for the purpose of surveying and studying the proposed water borehole site at Okada Community that has suffered acute water problems for a very long time. There have been series of boreholes drilled in the studied area but all are dry wells. This survey was conducted to investigate the subsurface complexity of the sites in respect of lithology and to recommend the total drill depth based on the prospective aquifer unit so identified. Result of interpretation suggests that the area is underlain with substantive aquiferous formation but at a depth not exceeding 121.60 m (398.95 ft), which is the lower aquifer unit. The value of elevation at point of observation referenced to mean sea level is 94 m.

ABSTRACT. We describe the construction and testing of a simple and efficient low-cost resistivimeter designed for use in practical classes in Applied Geophysics. The equipment was successfully tested in a vertical electrical sounding (VES) performed on sandy terrain within the campus of the Universidade Federal de Sergipe, Brazil. The VES results were in good agreement with the profiles obtained from two boreholes located approximately 500 m from the test area, clearly demonstrating the efficiency of the equipment and the adopted methodology. Keywords: vertical electrical sounding, electrical resistivity, resistivity profile.
