<div><p>Since the end of 2019, the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has caused more than 180,000 deaths all over the world, still lacking a medical treatment despite the concerns of the whole scientific community. Human Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) was recently recognized as the transmembrane protein serving as SARS-CoV-2 entry point into cells, thus constituting the first biomolecular event leading to COVID-19 disease. Here, by means of a state-of-the-art computational approach, we propose a rational evaluation of the molecular mechanisms behind the formation of the complex and of the effects of possible ligands. Moreover, binding free energy between ACE2 and the active Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is evaluated quantitatively, assessing the molecular mechanisms at the basis of the recognition and the ligand-induced decreased affinity. These results boost the knowledge on the molecular grounds of the SARS-CoV-2 infection and allow to suggest rationales useful for the subsequent rational molecular design to treat severe COVID-19 cases.</p></div>

According to the problems that the coalbed methane resource was rich in deep seam in China, but the economic and technology conditions were limited, it would be hard to mine with a conventional method. The CO2 capture, utilization and storage technology was provided (CO2-ECBM). The application of the technology would not only improve the methane recovery ratio from deep and unminable layer, but also put CO2 effectively in the deep layer for storage to reach a target of reducing emission. The study showed that a coal rank, coal seam pressure, coal seam permeability, injection time, injected gas types and others would affect to the recovery ratio of methane in a production mine. Therefore, before we use this technology, a rational evaluation should be conducted on the place location. So the capture and storage technology of CO2 has an important significance in protecting the natural environment.

Vulnerability assessment for groundwater pollution is an important indication for groundwater management in many areas of the world. According to the principles of systemic evaluation indicators and its impact factors, the GOD model is selected as the fundamental method for groundwater vulnerability assesment in Jiangying City. Furthermore,the scientific and rational evaluation results are demonstrated. The findings in this paper is helpful in providing some reference or basis for sustainable development of regional groundwater capacity, and evaluating sustainable agricultural development capacity of Jiangyin city. The evaluation results for groundwater quality is consisted with the actually situation in study area. The work is meaningful to guide a theoretical and practical regulation for groundwater resource, as well as to explore the mechanism of groundwater contamination resulting from agricultural activities.

Abstract This paper explores the application of hinge epistemology to deep disagreement. Hinge epistemology holds that there is a class of commitments—hinge commitments—which play a fundamental role in the structure of belief and rational evaluation: they are the most basic general ‘presuppositions’ of our world views which make it possible for us to evaluate certain beliefs or doubts as rational. Deep disagreements seem to crucially involve disagreements over such fundamental commitments. In this paper, I consider pessimism about deep disagreement, the thesis that such disagreements are rationally irresolvable, and ask whether the Wittgensteinian account of deep disagreement—according to which such disagreements are disagreements over hinge commitments—provides adequate support for pessimism. I argue that the answer to this question depends on what hinge commitments are and what our epistemic relation to them is supposed to be. I argue for two core claims. First, that non-epistemic theories of hinge commitments provide adequate support for pessimism. Nevertheless, such theories have highly implausible consequences in the context of deep disagreement. Secondly, at least one epistemic theory of hinge commitments, the entitlement theory, permits optimism about such disagreements. As such, while hinge epistemology is mainly pessimistic about deep disagreement, it doesn’t have to be.

Active machinery monitoring – continuous supervising, diagnosing, managing, controlling, compensating, documenting- is a process of acquiring and transferring streams of information (usually source information) about the analysed object, process, and relations between the same and the environment that can be used to realize the postulated state: knowledge creation (theory and innovation), environment melioration (harmfulness) and technical system optimization (design) - depending on technology needs and engineer imaginations. Knowledge creation comes as result of the creative action (creating). Melioration means the intentional activities of a technical system and boundary zone; activities that enhance, improve, and restore properties of the environment and not only limit technological harmfulness. Optimum comes in property of the machinery design (construction) or system state with respect to the criteria that enable rational evaluation of the state. Active monitoring, investigations into multi-disc grinders, demonstrate that it is possible to acquire knowledge of, describe and utilize, for design and structural purposes, the characteristics that indicate the relations between speeds, idle movement, loads and the indicators of motion variables in the grinding space. The objective of this example is to provide a mathematical description, optimisation of the states and changes in the grinding grains and machine space, their surface and volume during movement (idle and working movement) of the components, and design assemblies in the multi-hole grinding process.

It has been unanimously acknowledged that the strength and deformation characteristics of bounded geomaterials, viz. cemented soils and natural rocks, are predominantly governed by the rate of loading/deformation. Rational evaluation of these time-dependent characteristics due to viscosity and ageing are vital for the reliable constitutive modelling. In order to study the effects of ageing and loading/strain rate (viscosity) on the behaviour of bounded geomaterials, a number of unconfined monotonic loading tests were performed on Gypsum Mixed Sand (GMS) specimens at a wide range of axial strain rates; ranging from 1.9E-05 to 5.3E+00 %/min (27,000 folds), and at different curing periods. The results indicate shifts in the viscous behaviour of GMS at critical strain rates of 2.0E-03 and 5.0E-01 %/min. In the light of this finding, the results are categorized into three discrete zones of strain rates, and the behaviour of GMS in each of these zones is discussed. A significant dependency of peak strength and stress-strain responses on strain rate was witnessed for specimens subjected to strain rates lesser than 2.0E-03 %/min, and the effects of viscosity/strain rate was found to be insignificant at strain rate higher than 5.0E-01%/min.

It is claimed that the radical sceptical problem that is the focus of much of contemporary epistemological discussion in fact divides into two logically distinct sub-problems—a formulation that turns on the closure principle and a second formulation which turns on the underdetermination principle. The Wittgensteinian account of the structure of rational evaluation is set out, and it is shown how this proposal—at least when properly formulated—can deal with closure-based radical scepticism. It is also claimed, however, that this account fails to gain any purchase on underdetermination-based radical scepticism. The antidote to this latter form of radical scepticism lies elsewhere—with, it is suggested, epistemological disjunctivism.
