Objectives : In order to prevent eutrophication and algal blooms, Ministry of Environment in Korea reinforced the effluent standards of wastewater treatment facilities. As a result, many advanced wastewater treatment processes have been implemented nationwide. Current conventional treatment systems have usually been facing high operational costs and large sludge production problems. Therefore, it is essential to develop more economic and efficient process to cope with these issues.Methods : The sedimentation and dissolved air flotation (SeDAF) process has been developed, that integrates sedimentation and dissolved air flotation. Several simulation experiments were carried out to verify and optimize the operation conditions of the SeDAF process. Removal efficiencies of each water quality item and sludge mass balance were analyzed intensively in the SeDAF process using the modified jar-test.Results and Discussion : Removal efficiencies of the SeDAF process were higher and more stable than those of sedimentation process. Several ‘sludge production / coagulant dosage’ ratios were analyzed and the representative value of 4 mg・L-1 as SS / mg・L-1 as Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> was obtained in the SeDAF process. Fractions of suspended solids (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) in sludge were measured; the ratios of flotation sludge to sedimentation sludge and fractions of flotation sludge in total sludge had their typical convergence ranges for the conditions of optimal coagulant dosage.Conclusions : The ratios or fractions of SS and T-P in sludge could be applied as the evaluation indicators of the SeDAF process. The reduction of coagulant dosage could be corresponded directly to the reduction of sludge production.

In the last 20 years, various advanced wastewater treatment processes have been introduced nationwide. The sedimentation・dissolved air flotation (SeDAF) process has been developed for efficient enhanced phosphorus removal in the previous researches. In the study, several factors were reviewed to examine the operation characteristics of the SeDAF process. In particular, the applicability of aluminium/phosphorus (Al/P) and aluminium/turbidity (Al/T) ratios were investigated intensively.Methods : To derive the appropriate operating conditions for the SeDAF process, several sets of lab-scale tests were carried out. For each operating condition, Al/P (Al/T-P), Al/PO<sub>4</sub>3--P, and Al/T (Al/Turbidity) ratios were analyzed, compared and reviewed respectively.Results and Discussion : Al/P ratio was revealed as the most prominent factor in terms of stability and feasibility of operation, and Al/P values of the SeDAF process could achieve lower values than those of other processes in the previous researches.Conclusions : It could be expected that the coagulant dosage decision using Al/P ratio has many advantages to reduce coagulant dosage and to decrease the amount of sludge production in the SeDAF process.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) incorporating filtration (DAFF) is used at the Bolivar wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to polish lagoon effluent for reuse. Elevated algal populations are frequently experienced and can lead to increased coagulant requirements and process control issues. Streaming current detectors (SCDs) and a charge demand analyser (CDA) were used to monitor the full-scale plant. This was followed by an optimisation study using a pilot plant with a CDA. It was found that the normal operational charge demand range for DAF at Bolivar was between −46 and −40 μeq L−1. Decreasing the pH of coagulation reduced coagulant consumption and facilitated more sensitive CDA responses to changes in alum dose.

Abstract As the water diversion reservoir showed high organic matter and high algae in summer, the potassium permanganate pre-oxidation/dissolved air flotation/carbon sand double filter process was developed. The test results show that the optimum operation conditions of the combined process were as follows: the dosage of KMnO4 was 0.3 mg/L, the dosage of polymeric aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC) was 3.0 mg/L (Al3+), the reflux ratio was 10%, and the dissolved gas pressure was 0.3 Mpa. Taking Ji'nan Queshan reservoir water algae pollution as the research object, the average removal rate of chlorophyll a, blue-green algae, turbidity, particle number and total organic carbon (TOC) reached 66.64%, 95.44%, 94.45%, 99.34% and 46.68%, respectively; the methylisoborneol (MIB) removal rate was 92.47%, the odor level decreased with process flow from raw water level 4 to effluent level 1.5, geosmin (GSM) dropped below the detection limit, and the total removal rate of trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was 33.56%. The effluent of the combined process meets the requirements of the Hygienic Standard for Drinking Water (GB5749-2006) after it is disinfected.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation about the performance of a horizontal flow high-rate pilot scale Dissolved Air Flotation (HRDAF) unit containing inclined parallel plates for treating a coloured and low turbidity raw water. Experiments were performed with the DAF unit in order to verify the influence on flotation of : (i) the water velocity (Vh) between the plates, in the range 18 to 96.5 cm.min−1 with corresponding Reynolds numbers between 240 and 1060; (ii) the supplied air (S*) value ranging from 2.2 to 8.5 g of air/m3 of water ; (iii) the angle of the plates (60° or 70°). The best pilot plant operational condition was obtained applying only 4.0 g/m3 (S*) with Vh around 18 cm.min−1 for treatment of water coagulated with a Al2(SO4)3 dosage of 40 mg.l−1. In these conditions, the unit presented very good removal efficiencies of colour (90%, residual of 10 uC), turbidity (88%, residual of 0.8 NTU ) and TSS (94%, residual of 1.8 mg.l−1). Furthermore, the unit could operate at higher Vh values up to 76 cm.min−1 and still present good results. The DAF unit thus behaved as a high rate unit presenting good performance with low air requirement.
