This study is a descriptive survey model which aims to reveal the measurement estimation abilities of secondary school students. The sample of the study consisted of 91 secondary school students at 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the province of Adana. Measurement estimation ability test was used as the data collection tool. This test is comprised of 10 items which include five measurement estimation abilities as measurement of length, area, volume, liquid and weight. The data obtained from the data collection tool was analyzed by quantitative analysis methods. The analysis results showed that the students’ measurement estimation abilities differed according to their gender and that difference was not statistically significant. It was also observed that the students’ levels of measurement estimation abilities were at “acceptable low estimation” level, their general performances in the measurement estimation test differed according to their grade levels and that difference was not significant. Moreover, it was concluded that the length and weight estimation levels of the students regarding length, area, volume, liquid, weight estimation scores were better than the estimation levels of area, volume, fluid. Although their levels increased according to their grade levels, it was not significant according to grade level.

This research aims to determine the basic value levels of students for physical education and sports lessons and to examine them according to various variables. The research has been designed as a descriptive survey model. The universe of the research consists of the students studying at a Secondary School affiliated to the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. The sample group consists of a total of 908 students studying in Istanbul in the 2020-2021 academic year, who were determined by the purposeful sampling method. The "Physical Education and Sports Lesson Value Scale (PESLVS)" was used as the data collection tool. The data collection tool is a 5-point Likert-type scale consisting of 23 items and 6 subdimensions. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of the scale obtained in this research was 0.84. Frequency, percentage, t-test for unrelated samples, and ANOVA were used in the analysis of the data. When the value levels of the students were examined, it was found that there was a significant difference in favor of female students in all dimensions. It was observed that the value levels of secondary school students differed significantly in all dimensions of the scale by grade level, and it was concluded as a result of the comparison between the groups that there was a significant difference in favor of the lower grade levels in all groups. It was concluded that the value levels of the students who played in the school team was higher.

Article visualizations:

This study was carried out to reveal the mental models of the secondary school students from different grade levels regarding the concept of space. At the same time, within the context of the study, it was aimed to determine the factors playing a role in the construction of their concepts of space. The study employed the special case study design, one of the descriptive methods. The study was conducted in the spring term of the 2016-2017 school year and the sampling of the study is comprised of the students attending a private secondary school in a city located in the western region of Turkey. In the study, a data collection tool including four open-ended questions developed by the researchers to determine the students’ mental models of the “space” was used. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical techniques. The findings of the study have revealed that the students mostly associate the concept of the space with the concepts of emptiness (53 students), infinity (50 students), planet (48 students) and star (28 students). These findings are also supported by the students’ drawings and the Celestial Bodies Mental Model was found to be the model most frequently used by the students.

This paper outlines the development and validation of a Four-tier instrument in the topic of salt hydrolysis (FTISH). The instrument was developed by using the procedure of FTDICK instrument as published by Habiddin & Page (2019). This study was a part of other separates studies conducted by other groups of researchers including Devita, Habiddin & Suaidy (2019) (in press). This study involved 127 students in total and data collection were carried out two times involving 64 students in the first data collection and 63 students in the second one. The participants of both groups were public secondary school students from Malang. The FTISH consists of 23 questions. The results show that the validity of the questions ranged between 0.263 and 0.745. The reliability of the instrument was 0.80 and falls in the high category. The future implementation of the instrument to support the teaching and learning of salt hydrolysis are also discussed.

The aim of this study was to reveal secondary school students' ability of making transitions between text, picture, table and graphic representations related to the electricity. The research is a case study of the qualitative research methods. The working groups of the study were totally 100 students, including 50 from each of 6th, 7th and 8th students, studying at a secondary school in the 2012-2013 academic year. To determine the students' status of transitions in representations, a measurement tool relating to the subject of electricity was developed by researches. The measurement consists open-ended questions which questioned transitions representations (text, images, tables and graphics) with each other. Document analysis method was used in data analysis. In this context, determining specific criteria, established codes in accordance with the given answers by the students and the questions was evaluated in certain dimensions. Consequently, students were found to be inadequate to present transitions in representations in electricity. When the results are evaluated, it was suggested that during the teaching of electricity topic, teaching practices to draw attention to transition between different representations and in measurement-assessment processes, the questions reflecting the transition between different representations should be given; regulation the assessment questions in textbooks in this direction is recommended.

The interplay between culture and technology is dynamic. Since ancient times, science has had a major impact on people, and people have determined the general direction of science progress. In this way, there is mutual influence between society and science. Socioscientific issues have emerged as a result of the interaction process between science and society. In this context, it was aimed to examine eighth grade students' attitudes towards socioscientific issues. The study was conducted with 136 eighth grade students studying in a city in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey in the 2018-2019 academic year. Quantitative data collection and analysis methods were used in this study, which aimed to examine the secondary school students’ attitudes towards socioscientific issues. “The Attitudes towards Socioscientific Issues Scale (ATSIS) " was used as data collection tool in the study. According to the findings of the factorial ANOVA test; it was determined that eighth grade students' showed positive attitude on socioscientific issues. While students had positive attitudes related to interest and usefulness of SSI, they also had neither positive nor negative attitudes related to interest and usefulness of SSI. In addition, it was observed that the general attitude levels about socioscientific issues and the mean scores of interest and usefulness, liking and anxiety sub-dimensions did not differentiate according to gender. Based on the findings, the importance of socioscientific issues was emphasized and recommendations were made to program makers, researchers and practitioners on teaching.

This study assessed sugar consumption among private secondary school students in Dutsin-Ma Township Katsina State, Nigeria. Three hypotheses were tested in the study. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population of this study comprised 175 (junior and senior) students of the three existing private secondary schools in Dutsin-Ma. The entire student population was studied. A self-constructed questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale was used to collect data. The instrument was validated by four health experts. Split-half method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and a reliability coefficient of 0.67 was obtained. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and percentage for rendering the demographic profile of the respondents and answering the first research question. The t-Test was used to test the stated hypotheses at level of 0.05. The study found that most of the students (58.29%) consume more artificial sugar than sugar obtained from natural sources. The study also found significant differences in sugar consumption between students in junior secondary classes and those in senior secondary in their consumption of sugar (p< 0.05). However, the study found no significant gender difference in the consumption of sugar among the students. Based on these findings, the study recommended a reduction in consumption of sugar by students particularly unwholesome foods such as biscuits and soft drinks rich in sugar.
