Background: Previous studies on attendance at delivery by skilled personnel have neglected childbearing women’s knowledge and attitude towards safe delivery practices. This study assessed factors influencing utilisation of safe delivery services among mothers of under-five children attending child welfare clinics in Osogbo. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at child welfare clinics in Osogbo, Nigeria. Respondents were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Data was collected using a semi-structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23. Statistical association between safe delivery practices and socio-demographic factors, knowledge of and attitude towards safe delivery practices were determined using logistic regression and p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Four hundred out of the 420 eligible respondents completed the questionnaire giving a response rate of 95.2%. More than half of the respondents; 223 (55.8%) were < 30 years old. Many respondents; 193 (48.3%) and their spouses; 229 (57.2%) had attained tertiary education. Almost all respondents; 389 (97.3%) attended antenatal care during their last pregnancies. Utilisation of skilled birth attendants was associated with antenatal clinic attendance in last pregnancy (p<0.001). Conclusion: The factors associated with utilisation of safe delivery services were respondent’s ages, educational attainment of the respondents and their spouses, and respondents’ attendance at antenatal clinic in last pregnancy. Implementation research on measures to promote antenatal and delivery services by skilled birth attendants is needed in order to increase utilisation of safe delivery practices by mothers.

Birth assistance in health facilities is one of the most effective ways to reduce maternal mortality. The skilled birth attendants can provide prompt and appropriate services in case of complications for the mother and baby. For this purpose, midwives should disseminate appropriate information so that the mother can have birth in the health facility. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship of husband and cultural support to the choice of birth place in the working area of  Berseri Pangkalan Kerinci Health Center of Palalawan District. This retrospective study used a quantitative approach with a total sample of 87 respondents selected with cluster sampling technique. Data were obtained through questionnaires. The data analysis used univariate and bivariate with chi-square statistic test. There was a relationship of a husband's support to the choice of birth place and with a p value of 0.000 and there was a relationship of culture to the choice of birth place with a p value of 0.028. Therefore, the health personnel should disseminate and improve P4K programs to optimize community participation in the preparation of childbirth, including a choice of birth place.

Abstract Background Each day, approximately 810 women die during pregnancy and childbirth and 94% of the deaths take place in low and middle income countries. Only 45% of the births in South Asia are attended by skilled professionals, which is lower than that in other Asian regions. Antenatal and postnatal care received from skilled providers can help prevent maternal and neonatal mortality by identifying pregnancy-related complications. Women’s empowerment is considered to be a significant determinant of maternal health care outcomes; however, studies on the contextual influences of different dimensions of empowerment in Nepal are relatively limited. Therefore, this study analyzed nationwide survey data to examine the influence of women’s economic empowerment, sociocultural empowerment, familial/interpersonal empowerment and media and information technology empowerment on accessing skilled delivery services among the married women in Nepal. Methods This study examined the influence of women’s empowerment on skilled delivery services among married women (n = 4400) aged 15–49 years using data from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. Results Significant associations were found between women’s media and information technology empowerment, economic empowerment and sociocultural empowerment and access to skilled birth attendants. Specifically, the education of women, their occupation, owning a bank account, media exposure, and internet use were significantly associated with the use of skilled birth attendants. Conclusion Focusing on women’s access to media and information technology, economic enhancement and education may increase the use of skilled birth attendants in Nepal.

To ascertain the level of knowledge among primary school teachers towards the management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in school and to determine the preference among teachers regarding the education tools that can be used to increase awareness and knowledge among them. A total of 150 teachers from primary schools in three different districts were included in the study and they were given self-administered questionnaires to be filled. The validated questionnaire was distributed randomly in the selected schools. The questionnaire included two scenarios comprising of tooth fracture and avulsion. Questions regarding awareness and management of these scenarios were asked. All 150 participants answered the questionnaire; of these 74% were females 26% were males. 64% of the participants had received tertiary education. Although 70% of teachers had obtained first aid training, only 9.3% of them had received training regrading dental injuries. About 53% of participants knew the correct answer for the appropriate response to fractured tooth and only 35.3% managed to correctly answer the question related to appropriate response to an avulsed tooth. Only 38.7% knew about appropriate rinsing solution and a mere 4.7% were familiar with proper storage media. Even though the teachers have poor knowledge regarding management of dental injuries, it is reassuring to know that 93% of them are keen on further training and awareness. More educational programmes need to be introduced to empower the teachers with the relevant knowledge required to deal with dental emergencies.

The initial bedside care of premature babies with an intact cord has been shown to reduce mortality; there is evidence that resuscitation of term babies with an intact cord may also improve outcomes. This process has been facilitated by the development of bedside resuscitation surfaces. These new devices are unaffordable, however, in most of sub-Saharan Africa, where 42% of the world’s 2.4 million annual newborn deaths occur. This paper describes the rationale and design of BabySaver, an innovative low-cost mobile resuscitation unit, which was developed iteratively over five years in a collaboration between the Sanyu Africa Research Institute (SAfRI) in Uganda and the University of Liverpool in the UK. The final BabySaver design comprises two compartments; a tray to provide a firm resuscitation surface, and a base to store resuscitation equipment. The design was formed while considering contextual factors, using the views of individual women from the community served by the local hospitals, medical staff, and skilled birth attendants in both Uganda and the UK.
