This paper is devoted to a novel Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) single-feed circularly polarized microstrip EBG antenna with compact size proposed for C-Band applications. The antenna structure will include eight slits introduced at the boundary and the corners in the radiating square patch with a cross-slot at the center. The provided study will effectively approve the various proposed structures and interest occupied by these types of antennas in the enhancement of output parameters (gain, directivity, radiation efficiency, and bandwidth) without much affecting the operating bandwidth at C-band. At first, the concept and the realization of a directive and circularly polarized antenna using an electromagnetic band gap material whose circular polarization is generated by the structure itself is discussed. The analysis and simulation results are presented for an antenna operating at 6.1 GHz using computer Simulation Technologies (CST). Furthermore, the new compact circular polarized EBG antenna, compared to experimental results, will confirm the pre-studied goal of these kinds of antennas such as radiation efficiency, polarization purity, radiation efficiency, high directivity, and gain.

This work presents the use of a three-element radiating structure for circularly polarized Low-Power Wide Area Network (LP-WAN) communication with space. The proposed structure has a 72 mm × 72 mm × 12 mm compact size with Right-Handed Circular Polarization (RHCP) and a 120∘ wide beamwidth radiation pattern. Printed on low-cost FR4 Epoxy substrate, a feeding network circuit based on Quasi Lumped Quadrature Coupler (QLQC), it achieves a −0.6 dB insertion loss and a very compact size. The final structure has a 69% total efficiency and a 3.14 dBic realized gain.

AbstractIn this article, a new structure comprising of a novel compact slot loaded polarization dependent Electromagnetic Band Gap structure (SLPDEBG), which enhances the performance of circularly polarized rotated square patch antenna by placing SLPDEBG unit cells around it, has been designed. The proposed antenna, having dimensions 0.640 λo x 0.640 λ x 0.0128 λo (λo stands for the free space wavelength at 2.39 GHz), shows that the measured impedance bandwidth and AR bandwidth is 120 MHz and 50 MHz, respectively, with a peak gain of 3.52 dB. Some prominent features of the proposed structure are: front to back ratio of 64, 3 db, beamwidth of 92° at xz-plane and 74° at yz-plane. This prototype antenna finds its application in wireless communication of ISM band. Good performance of the proposed antenna is verified by the close agreement between the simulated and measured results.

The circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antennas, both of singly- and doubly-fed types, possess inherent limitation in gain, impedance and axial-ratio bandwidths. These limitations are caused mainly by the natural resonance of the patch antenna which has a high unloaded Q-factor and the frequency-dependent excitation of two degenerative modes (TM01 and TM10) when using a single feed. Many applications which require circular polarization, large bandwidth, and good performance, especially in the field of wireless communication, are still difficult to be designed by using antenna software. Some consideration to take will include the application target and design specification, the materials to be used, and the method to choose (formula, numerical analysis, etc). This paper explains and analyzes the singly-fed microstrip antenna with circular polarization and large bandwidth. This singly-fed type of microstrip antenna provides certain advantage of requiring no external circular polarizer, e.g. the 900 hybrid, as it only needs to apply some perturbation or modification to a patch radiator with a standard geometry. The design of CP and large-bandwidth microstrip antenna is done gradually, by firstly truncating one tip, then truncating the whole three tips, and finally modifying it into a pentagonal patch structure and adding an air-gap to obtain larger bandwidths of impedance, gain and axial ratio. The last one antenna structure results in a novelty because it is a rare design of antenna which includes all types of bandwidth (impedance, gain, and axial ratio) being simultaneously larger than the origin antenna. The resulted characteristic performance of the 1-tip (one-tip) antenna shows respectively 1.9% of impedance bandwidth, 3.1% of gain bandwidth, and 0.45% of axial-ratio bandwidth. For the 3-tip (three-tip) step, the resulted bandwidths of respectively impedance, gain, and axial ratio are 1.7%, 3.3% and 0.5%. The pentagonal structure resulted in the bandwith values of 15.67%, 52.16% and 4.11% respectively for impedance, gain, and axial ratio.

This paper presents a rectangular-shaped printed monopole antenna with circular polarization for Wi-Fi (2.4–2.484 GHz) and WiMAX (3.3-3.7 GHz) bands. The antenna relies on asymmetric arrangement of the patch with respect to the microstrip feed, in order to generate circular polarization. Dual-band (Wi-Fi and WiMAX) operation is enabled by inserting a slit in the corner of the ground plane. Simulation results show a bandwidth increase of 15.9% (2.2–2.58 GHz) for Wi-Fi, and of 24.16% (3.13–3.99 GHz) for WiMAX applications. Furthermore, beamwidths at the axial ratio of 3 dB equal 48˚ and 51˚ for the x-z plane and y-z planes, respectively.

In this paper the analysis and design of a dual circularly polarized 4×4 antenna array operating in Ku-band are discussed with emphasis on its sequential feeding network. The dual circular polarization is achieved by feeding a stacked octagonal patches with a wideband branch line coupler. The proposed 4×4 antenna array is based on two separate sequential feeding networks for LH and RH circular polarizations. The advantage of the proposed feeding network is that it is implemented on a single layer. Simulation results by using both HFSS and CST are presented for comparison. In addition, experimental verifications are presented.
