The comparative study of the soils sample collected from Gudu and Oworoshoki area, Sokoto state and Lagos State was carried out to compare the index properties of soil at shallow soil deposit. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was used to locate the coordinates of the site. Shallow soil samples (disturbed and undisturbed) at different depths (1m, 2m and 3m) were collected from both study areas (Gudu and Oworoshoki). The disturbed samples were collected using hand trowel, digger, hoe and polythene bags while the undisturbed samples were collected using short pipes (samplers) by stroking each pipe into the ground completely with a hammer at each depth. Disturbed and undisturbed soils collected at different shallow depths (1m, 2m and 3m) were taken to the laboratory for natural moisture content, specific gravity, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits and unit weight test. Empirical equations were used for analyzing the soil samples and AASTHO System of classification was used for classifying the soil samples. The results of the test on Gudu soil samples has shown that the soil sample collected at depth 1.0m and 2.0m are nonplastic materials and were classified according to AASHTO standard as A-3 and sample at depth 3.0m as A-4 which is silty soil while Oworoshoki soil samples has shown that Soils from depth 1.0m, 2.0m and 3.0m are nonplastic (NP) because the Plastic Index (PI = 0) is zero and the soil samples are classified as A – 3 according to AASHTO standard.

Fifteen samples of coarse-grained lateritic soils obtained from different parts of Anambra State were assessed for their suitability as materials for highway construction. The soil samples were subjected to laboratory tests to obtain their index properties, compaction and California bearing ratio (CBR) characteristics. Three compactive efforts namely, British Standard Light (BSL) compaction, West African Standard (WAS) and British Standard Heavy (BSH) compaction were employed in the compaction tests. Samples were soaked for 48hrs prior to CBR testing. The index properties of the soils were used to classify the soils as   silty sand (SM) or silty sand/clayey sand (SM-SC) based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) classification as well as silty soils (A – 4) or silty/clayey gravel and Sand (A – 2 -4) based on American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) classification. All the fifteen soils fell under “grading F” based on AASHTO standard specification designations for particle size distribution. The maximum dry unit weight (MDUW) of the soil samples ranged from 16.203 kN/m3 to 19.424 kN/m3,17.385 kN/m3 to 19.996 kN/m3 and from 18.126 kN/m3 to 21.473 kN/m3 with  corresponding optimum moisture content of 11.4% to 21.4%, 12.45% to 12.5%  and 8.5% to 11.75% for BSL, WAS and BSH respectively. The CBR values ranged between 7.92% and 18.87%. Most of the soil (more than 50%) did not meet the lower values of MDUW while only 20% of the soils had CBR values above 10% which is specified for subgrade soils by the AASHTO standard and the Nigerian Highway Design Manual, Federal Ministry of works and Housing.Keywords: coarse-grained, lateritic soils, highway pavement materials, USCS, AASHTO

The study of geotechnical index properties of soils in Oworoshoki, Kosofe, Lagos State was conducted to characterize and classify the index properties of soil samples. Disturbed and undisturbed soils were collected at different shallow depths (1m, 2m and 3m) from the study area and laboratory test was conducted. The laboratory test conducted includes natural moisture content, atterberg limits (liquid limit and plastic limit), particle size distribution, specific gravity, unit weight and hydrometer. The results of the test were gotten: natural moisture content as 23.5%, 24.5% and 25.3% , liquid limits (LL) 28.68%, 26.64% and 29.10%, Oworoshoki is non-plastic for the three depths i.e. plastic limit (PL) is 0, particle size distribution percentage passing through BS #200 (0.075mm) are 95.97 %, 97.97%, 98.10% and this shows that the soil sample contain much silt, the samples are non-plastic for all depths (1m, 2m and 3m), specific gravity as 2.61, 2.55 and 2.60, unit weight as 17.5 KN/m3, 18.1kn/m3 and 18.9KN/m3 and hydrometer percentage passing through BS #200 (0.075mm) as 95.97% at 1.0m depth, 97.97% at 2.0m depth and 98.10% at 3.0m depth. Hydrometer test was conducted because 95.97% passes sieve 0.075mm.This shows that the soil contain high amount of silt. Soils from depth 1.0m, 2.0m and 3.0m are non-plastic (NP) because the Plastic Index (PI=0) and the soil samples are classified as A – 3 according to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) System.

Abstract: This research is a comparative literary study that uses Malay and Javanese versions of Mahabarata text sources. The research objects used were the text edition of Pandhawa Gubah (PG) by Sudibjo Z. Hadisutjipto and the text of Cheritera Pandawa Lima (CPL) by Khalid Hussain. The research method used is descriptive-analysis method. In the comparative study used a comparative literary theory proposed by Endraswara (2011). The results of the text comparison reveal the similarities and differences in the image of Bima figures in the Javanese and Malay versions. The equation as a whole is that both texts contain the same heroic storyline and heroic character, Bima. In addition, Indian influence is still evident in the two texts seen from the nuances of Hinduism that exist in both texts. While the difference is seen in the events that accompany Bima's struggle in achieving his victory. Based on these similarities and differences, it can be seen that the authors attempt to represent the concept of metaphysical interactions vertically and horizontally expressed through PG text. --- Abstrak: Penelitian ini adalah satu kajian sastra bandingan yang menggunakan sumber teks Mahabarata versi Melayu dan Jawa. Objek penelitian yang digunakan adalah edisi teks Pandhawa Gubah (PG) karya Sudibjo Z. Hadisutjipto dan teks Cheritera Pandawa Lima (CPL) karya Khalid Hussain. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif-analisis. Dalam telaah perbandingan digunakan teori sastra bandingan yang dikemukakan Endraswara (2011). Hasil perbandingan teks mengungkapkan adanya persamaan dan perbedaan citra tokoh Bima dalam versi Jawa maupun versi Melayu. Persamaan secara keseluruhan adalah kedua teks tersebut mengandung alur cerita kepahlawanan dan tokoh pahlawan yang sama yaitu Bima. Selain itu, pengaruh India masih tampak dalam kedua teks tersebut dilihat dari nuansa Hinduisme yang ada dalam kedua teks. Sementara perbedaannya tampak pada peristiwa-peristiwa yang menyertai perjuangan Bima dalam mencapai kemenangannya. Berdasarkan persamaan dan perbedaan tersebut tampak adanya upaya penulis untuk merepresentasikan konsep interaksi metafisik secara vertikal dan horizontal yang diungkapkan melalui teks PG.

The model of contrastive cultural comparison discussed here is claimed to have applacibility to every possible study of other countries (»Auslandswissenschaft«) and to be able to provide the Geisteswissenschaften with an intercultural orientation.
