Abstract The article discusses a project that features the relocation of the historic Atelier building, built by Krakow-based architect Wandalin Beringer (1839–1923) who was active in the early twentieth century, and the regeneration of a plot belonging to the Congregation of the Resurrection since 1885, which is located at 12 Łobzowska Street in Krakow. The method includes cutting the entire structure off at the foundation and then after reinforcing it with a steel structure transporting it in its entirety to the new location. The project included two possible variants of moving the building in a straight line, either by 21 or 59 metres and evaluates two projects of further regeneration, the adaptive reuse of the building as an exhibition and religious space as well as a proposal for the remodelling of the nearby plot that belongs to the Congregation into a space for meditation and as a recreational park. The aim of these measures is to prevent the demolition of this building, now over a century old, as a result of which a forgotten element of the cultural heritage of the city will be saved. This project was based on the results of analyses of the cultural and historical conditions of Krakow. The block of buildings in which the Atelier in question is located is a very attractive location, near to the very centre of Krakow, adjacent to residential, service and educational buildings. It is directly adjacent to the Monastery Complex of the Congregation of the Resurrection, listed as a heritage building under conservation protection (municipal registry of heritage buildings). In the second half of the twentieth century, the building was used as a workroom by artists such as Xawery Dunikowski and later by the sculptress Teodora Stasiak. The case of the Atelier may provide an inspiration for discussion as well as raising awareness among citizens and city authorities to avoid future situations in which cultural heritage may become forgotten or demolished.

This paper describes a study of the conservation approach Jahar Palace building as a heritage building in Kelantan and categorized as significant heritage. The Jahar Palace Building, now known as the Royal Tradition and Customs Museum, that was recognized as a heritage building in 2012 from the National Heritage Department (JWN) and is one of the main tourism destinations for tourists coming to Kelantan. In addition, the Jahar Palace rich in ancient heritage architecture which was built by tradisional arts and craft experts, also has been used as a residence and administrative center in the early days of its construction. However, just like any other heritage building whereby the architecture was built from wood that prone to high risk of damage and defects due to several factors, especially natural disasters. In 2004 and 2014, the state of Kelantan suffered heavy floods in Kota Bharu that causes the Jahar Palace flooded and damage to structures. Therefore, this study emphasizes how conservation approaches are used to prevent and restore the heritage buildings from damage and obsolescence while preserving their original and aesthethic value. In addition, this study used document analysis methods, observation and semi-structured interviews on obtaining the Jahar Palace as heritage buildings for the pilot data collection. Thus, significant conservation approach is needed and vital to maintain the Jahar Palace as a protected heritage building as well as boost the economy of the tourism industry in Kelantan.

Since the Portuguese era in Malacca in the 16th century, many authentic colonial heritage buildings were built in Malacca and other parts of Malaysia, most of which were masonry structural buildings. After Melaka and George Town received recognition from UNESCO as World Heritage Sites on 7th July 2008, heritage building conservation in Malaysia has attracted serious attention from various parties. Since the establishment of the National Heritage Department under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) on 1 March 2006, the implementation of scientific tests in heritage building conservation practice in Malaysia has been encouraged and recommended by the Department. However, scientific tests are normally only conducted in conservation works of National Heritage buildings and some Category I heritage buildings, but not made compulsory for all heritage buildings conservation projects in Malaysia. This paper is based on a research carried out to study the scientific tests conducted in masonry heritage building as part of conservation practice in Malaysia. The research findings revealed that scientific tests such as X-ray fluorescence test, ion chromatography test, moisture test and Schmidt hammer rebound test are important for masonry heritage building conservation in Malaysia. The basic guidelines to conduct the scientific tests derived from the research findings will be able to enhance the current practice in conserving masonry heritage buildings in Malaysia.

Purpose – The paper describes how expert views were elicited in developing a conceptual framework of conserving cultural values of heritage buildings (CVHB) from the facilities management perspective (fm). It proposes the manifestation of fm perspective of people, place, process, and technology as a tool to sustain the physical condition and integrity of a HB and its CV according to fm dimension before a HB is endorsed as a heritage. The linkages between fm and CVHB will help to produce a guideline for conserving CVHB from fm perspective (CVHBfm) at the initial phase of conservation in Malaysia. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The study opted for an exploratory approach; three expert interviews were conducted from three levels of conservation practitioners drawn from strategic, tactical, and operational levels. A matrix thematic was used to manifest the qualitative variables in mapping the conceptual framework. The respondents will provide views and linkages between eight criteria of CVHB (social, economic, political, historic, aesthetical, scientific, age, and ecological) and fm dimension (people, place, process, and technology) in conserving a HB at the preliminary phase of conservation. The responses from these respondents will provide insights into how fm perspective manifest and epistemological construct with CVHB variables that will be integrated in a case study method for further investigation inquiry. Findings – In this paper, the study indicates an fm perspective of people, place, process, and technology, associates and epistemological constructed with CVHB criteria of social, historic, aesthetical, and scientific in sustaining the physical condition and integrity of CVHB from fm dimension in Malaysia. The respondents from three levels of conservation practitioners (strategic, tactical, and operational) have explained and elaborated briefly the connotation between CVHB and fm in mapping the framework. It also provides insights into how fm dimension manifests with those CVHB variables in conserving a HB before it is endorsed as a heritage at the initial stage of conservation. Originality/value – Moving from this exploratory study, further research will be undertaken. In-depth interviews will be carried out with a rigorous emphasis on fm and eight criteria of CVHB with a greater number of experts on HB conservation from strategic, tactical, and operational levels in Malaysia. Documents suggested during the initial study such as The National Heritage Act 2005 (Malaysia) and UNESCO's outstanding universal values (OUV) will be analysed and framed in mapping the conceptual framework. Further investigation will assist Malaysia in advancing the application of fm perspective to enhance the conservation of HB and its CV by highlighting the role of fm as a robust tool in sustaining the integrity HB in Malaysia.

Despite the rich and diverse heritage buildings in Malaysia, they suffer from many problems and threats. Many heritage buildings are deteriorating, and this threatens the country’s cultural values. The deterioration of built heritage is a result of the poor inheritance of its related documentation and need to be addressed. Thus, this study brought forward the concept of preservation using Building Information Modelling (BIM). Exploring the potential of BIM as a preservation tool in reviving local cultural values might help to balance the problem of poor inheritance or inconsistency in managing historic and documentation maintenance. The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between levels of development (LOD) and usage of BIM in heritage building preservation. This study employs exploratory research using content analysis. The result of the study found that the availability of as-built details (LOD 500) of the building would be the crucial dataset needed for BIM to function in heritagebuilding as H-BIM. This paper suggests on techniques available for constructing Level of Development (LOD) needed for H-BIM.

An assessment of historic buildings, its history and conditions are essential in the study of buildings conservation. Other than architecture history and building defects, the interior scheme of building, the decorations, the building's form and space interior layout are also some significant aspects that need to be analysed in building conservation study. In current practice, the change of use of any heritage building will need approval from the National Heritage Department (NHD). The report of history and building condition is the one of the main documents needed to be submitted for the approval process. The main objective of this research is to analyse the buildings based on the original materials, form, function, decoration, and layout. The methods used for this research include in depth building investigation, analysis, and interpretation; backed up by measured drawing and historical assessment. The analysis involved the mapping of original and existing spaces and then analysed the unique characters of the interior using a series of photos categorised based on time or dates of the photos. From this analysis, the authenticity of the space can be identified and recommendations on better usage of spaces of these historic buildings can be proposed to the National Heritage Department.
