The focus of this paper is a research project conducted in three higher education sites and at a variety of work sites to compare the writing produced in business writing programmes with the writing practised in workplaces. The aim of this study was to determine whether business communication courses adequately prepare students for business communication in the world of work. Documents produced at both the higher education and workplace sites were studied, and surveys and interviews were done with students and their lecturers, and employees and employers. Data from the different contexts were then compared. The findings show patterns of alignment and non-alignment in the business writing practices of higher education and workplaces. Recommendations are made to better align classroom and work practices for the mutual benefit of student learning and workplaces.

Over the last decade the deployment and use of learning analytics has become routine in many universities around the world. The ability to analyse the way students interact with technology has demonstrated significant value for providing insights into student learning and there are now a wide range of uses for learning analytics in education. From use as a diagnostic tool, to a method for prediction, learning analytics in higher education has an emphasis on a wide range of outcome measures, including student retention, progression, attainment, performance, mastery, employability and engagement. In exploring how learning analytics can improve learning practice by transforming the ways we support learning processes, this editorial highlights some of the learning analytics research that has been published in AJET to date.

China’s non-government Higher Education sector has experienced 40 years of growth but has faced a range of problems in recent years. There is an urgent need to think carefully about future directions and approaches that non-government universities might take. Internationalization is changing the world of education and has become important strategically for Higher Education institutions across the world. This research explores what internationalization might mean and provides an understanding of internationalization in the context of Chinese non-government universities. Under the internationalization framework in Western academic literature, this study investigates the practice from a case study university in China. Data were collected through semistructured interviews along with document analysis. Participants indicated that internationalization is learning, integrating initiatives for mutual benefit and can be an accelerator for overall development of universities. Furthermore, the government and  society need to work together to create a more equitable government policy that positively encourages China’s non-government Higher Education institutions to bolster internationalization. Keywords: China, non-government institutions, internationalization

This paper draws on ongoing work into student learning in higher education to consider a basis for conceptualising students’ experiences of understanding in medicine. Starting with a modest overview of research on the nature of students’ experiences of understanding the paper goes on to consider research on students’ personal understandings in terms of knowledge objects. Linking on to research on students’ epistemological beliefs the paper forges connections to recent research on threshold concepts and related research on conceptual change. Against the background of this brief overview the paper surveys the research on medical education, and then draws on interview data, currently being collected in a Swedish research project, to offer a preliminary conceptualisation of students’ experiences of understanding in medicine.

This book discusses the local effects of globalisation, especially in the context of social work, health and practical theology, as well as the challenges of higher education in a troubled world. The more globalised the world becomes, the more important local identities are. The global becomes effective in the local sphere. This phenomenon, called ‘glocalisation’ since the 1990s, poses many challenges to people and to the social structures in which they operate.

Institutions from basic to higher education in Mexico that offer courses of English as a Foreign Language rely heavily on the administering of assessment, usually a formal type of assessment. However, the literature shows how important it is the involvement of other types of assessment in the classroom for effective language learning to take place. For instance, assessment for learning, which consist of a continuous assessment where learners receive feedback so greater learning occurs, what is more, it enables teachers to modify their teaching ways as they reflect on the learners’ progress. To show how assessment is carried out in our context, this research project focuses on a case study within the CAADI from FOD in the UANL.
