This article describes some parameters that should be taken into consideration during designing English for Specific Purposes course for combined major programme 6B015002 ‘Chemistry and Biology’ at Suleyman Demirel University. English for Specific Purposes courses focus on specific field or discipline, such as engineering, law, management, marketing, accounting, medicine or science in our case. English for Specific Purpose teaching requires real life learning situations which might be achieved with the help of appropriate course that is designed after considering parameters that detect whether the course should be intensive or extensive, assessed or non-assessed, common-core or specific, homogeneous or heterogeneous, fixed or flexible, or deal with immediate or delayed needs and finally identify the role of English for Specific Purposes teachers. After studying all parameters of course design listed above everything is put in a nutshell as a result of the case study of English for Specific Purposes course on chemistry-biology specialty at Suleyman Demirel University.

Purpose This paper aims to study the role of the emerging technology landscape and collaborative platforms in customer relationship management (CRM) unravelling novel opportunities for mutual co-creation in Indian banking context. Design/methodology/approach This study used the case-study method for collecting various sources for “triangulation”. Findings The advancement of technology has drastically increased avenues of dialogue and access and brought transparency in the relationship, offering opportunities for co-creation and increased dependence on technology in CRM. A longitudinal approach explained how bank leveraged technology in multiple aspects of CRM for enhancing relationship quality and outcome. Research limitations/implications The study is exploratory in nature in Indian banking context, and thus it should be viewed as a preliminary step in contributing to the understanding of CRM in a new collaborative technology landscape. Practical implications This study explains the changing shape of CRM and provides relevance of customer orientation and offers insight about co-creation which has taken centre stage because of the emergence of collaborative technologies. Originality/value This study is possibly one of the first to conduct a case study to understand the way collaborative technological advancements are being exploited by organisations to develop superior CRM capability and achieve co-creation. This study analysed and comprehended the design and implementation of CRM in an Indian bank in real-life settings to gain a better understanding of the adoption of new collaborative technological advancements by a bank for customer centricity and facilitating co-creation.

This paper presents and assesses a new approach to decision-making methods for the design of new reservoirs due in times of decreasing water resources. The methods used in this case are decision theory, Resilience and Robustness method. The methods have been selected primarily to analyze different design parameters of a new dam, mainly dam heights leading to different reservoir volumes. The study presents a novel approach to the optimal design of a multipurpose reservoir that would provide enough water for downstream environmental flow, residential and industrial water supply, agricultural water supply, and hydropower generation in the current conditions of climate uncertainty. Uncertainties are interpreted as possible future changes in the climate system using outputs from regional climatic models. In the case study, a simulation model was developed which is able to quantify long-term water balance and use this data to quantify resilience and robustness of its water supply. The simulation model was correlated to the GANetXL software in order to perform Genetic Algorithms based optimization of the reservoir’s operation. The simulation–optimization model was then applied to a real-life case study in the Czech Republic, in the Morava River Basin where a new dam with the multipurpose reservoir is planned to be built in the future. The results obtained in this way were analyzed in detail to identify the overall best solution consist of dam height and the total reservoir monthly outflow and new operational rules for the analyzed multipurpose reservoir.

Assessment is viewed as an internal and pivotal part of learning, where cultural factors, previous experiences, and future aspirations affect learners’ perceptions. In recent years, an increasing number of western universities have established their campuses or “dual” programmes in China. In the first Sino–Finnish programme, 293 Finnish and Chinese students participated in the same English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. This study investigated students’ perceptions of assessment through an adapted version of the “Students’ Conceptions of Assessment” inventory, and it explored if the responses on each conception differ between the groups. The self-report inventory included statements based on four main conceptions of assessment: improvement, external factors, affect/benefit, and irrelevance, while open-ended questions were also included. The analysis of the open-ended questions raised the issues of teacher fairness, learner autonomy, and feedback. Additionally, differences appeared between the role of assessment and its relation to future aspirations, as well as the role of the parents. This study is a starting point for exploring the conceptions for distinct groups of students regarding assessment, providing a better understanding of students’ perceptions and discussing the implications for the language classroom.

The author presents an unusual case study of matricide, one in which the perpetrator, a 33-year-old poet and actor, acted out the role of Orestes in real life. The biogenic basis of his mental illness, schizoaffective disorder, was exacerbated by a developmental trauma—the loss of his father to polio and of his mother to psychosis—as a toddler. The only psychotic avenue to his masculine identification and separation from his mother as an adult was murder.

AbstractAlthough the important role of providing fieldwork experiences for students in the natural environment is now well-established within environmental education literature, there is still little research evidence to guide teachers in their choice of effective teaching strategies. This paper presents findings from an interpretive case study designed to investigate the value of combining experience-based fieldwork in a mangrove and coastal environment with reflective and metacognitive activities. Analysis of video recordings, researcher observation notes and interviews of a class of Year 11 biology students who participated in the activities resulted in the emergence of five themes. These themes together provided evidence of enhanced student environmental learning, and included student appreciation for various learning contexts, self-awareness of group learning processes, and awareness of the integration of cross-curriculum knowledge. The study supports and illustrates the contention that the most effective environmental learning experiences are likely to be those that integrate learning in the natural environment with classroom learning strategies.

This paper explores the role of internal communication in one under-researched form of organizational crisis, insider threat – threat to an organization, its people or resources, from those who have legitimate access. In this case study, we examine a high security organization, drawing from in-depth interviews with management and employees concerning the organizational context and a real-life incident of insider threat. We identify the importance of three communication flows (top-down, bottom-up, and lateral) in explaining, and in this case, enabling, insider threat. Derived from this analysis, we draw implications for communication and security scholars, as well as practitioners, concerning: the impact of unintentional communication, the consequences of selective silence and the divergence in levels of shared understanding of security among different groups within an organization.

<p>In this work, we present a general framework for design and risk assessment of hydraulic structures for water control. The framework relies on a “structure-based approach”, accounting for both the statistical behavior of the hydrological load acting on the river system and the hydraulic response of the structure to the environmental load. This approach allows for the reduction of a multivariate and complex statistical problem to a univariate one, focusing on the damage. The framework is applied to an offline detention basin for flood mitigation based on a general, yet simplified routing model. Furthermore, a real-world case study application is presented, with the specific aim of discussing the role of the design parameters and their effect on the probability distribution of damage. Results show the robustness and the effectiveness of the approach for applications to real cases and provide design guidance for practitioners.</p>

This chapter shares the development and implementation of a redesigned Information Sources and Services course and presents a case study that examines the impact of that course on student learning. The revised course applies Presence Pedagogy incorporating epistemic framing through extended role-play and the use of experienced mentors in a three-dimensional immersive virtual environment. Also examined are: changes in students’ comfort level while playing the role of reference librarian, their technology skills and confidence, similarities and dissimilarities between the game role and an imagined real-life role, students’ comfort level with the presence of a mentor, and their incorporating mentor suggestions.

Abstract Introduction: In the reflective writing process, teachers make identification, information, explanation and evaluation activities (Spanneberg, 2009). It is thought that the scenarios written by the teacher candidates in order to teach a certain subject can give them an opportunity to think deeply. However, these teaching scenarios can be a valuable tool for reflective thinking in terms of educational matters such as teaching methods, pedagogy, and beliefs. Methods: In this study, it was investigated whether script writing is an effective tool to make pedagogical elements visible in the prospects of mathematics teachers. Case study pattern, which is one of the qualitative research patterns, was used in the research. For this purpose, thirty prospective mathematics teachers who participated in the study were asked to write two scenarios. The first one is called as “car travel” and the other one is called as “triangles and similarity” scenario. Before the study, some basic frameworks were defined for both scenarios. These are explained to prospective teachers. The “car travel” scenario in this research was given within the scope of the theme which includes only two people and a limited environmental interaction. The second scenario is the triangles and the similarity scenario. In the second scenario, the role of a teacher who conducts applied and real-life education outside of school is defined. Results: In general, it is concluded that script writing activities are very useful in training teachers. The data obtained from both scenarios reveal that the pedagogical elements constructed during the scenario writing activities become concrete in the minds of the prospective teachers. Discussion: It is observed that prospective teachers often include the structure of teaching related to real life in their scenarios. It is stated that teaching in the context of real life increases academic success and students’ interest in the lesson, and thus, the content is learned perceptibly by the students (Acar & Yaman, 2011). Another cognitive element that prospective teachers include in their scenarios is the use of available materials. It is noteworthy that the prospective teachers used real-life tools and materials as materials in the place chosen for the scenarios of their scripts. Limitations: This research is limited to script texts written by thirty prospective teachers. Conclusions: Thanks to this visibility, feedback can be given on the pedagogical elements that the prospective teacher will use in the future.
