This study attempts to evaluate the relationship between tourism and trade and self-employment growth in Ghana, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire using a time series data spanning the period 1991-2019. In this study, applied GMM approach is employed. Results show that export and import trade, development assistance and personal remittance flows significantly spur self-employment during the study period while indicators of tourism activities represented by the number of tourist arrivals retard growth of self-employment but increases export trade in these countries. On this basis, the business atmosphere and infrastructural facilities should be improved to sufficiently boost the relationship between trade and tourism and hence spur self-employment growth in these countries.

Abstract:This article analyzes the relationship between Mande hunters (dozos) and the Ivorian state in the prefecture of Ouangolodougou in northern Côte d’Ivoire. Having adopted a prominent security role during the violent conflict of 2002–2011, dozos have made continuing efforts to maintain their position in the post-conflict state. To negotiate their position, they draw on a performative repertoire, such as the display of powerful attributes in the context of processions. Although they have had to concede some more strategic and profitable activities to the reestablished state, dozo chiefs effectively govern the rural northern borderlands of Côte d’Ivoire.

The aim of this study is to establish a link between the performance at speed race and the somatotype within young students from Côte d’Ivoire who are candidates for the recruitment test organized by the National Institute of Youth and Sports. The study was performed on 669 girls at 21.80+2.26 year old and 1859 boys at 22.11+2.26 years. Anthropometrical measures were made out in order to estimate somatotype. For the speed, the subjects underwent a 80m speed race test for girls and a 100m speed race for boys. After a descriptive analysis of the somatotype components and the performance of girls and boys, we made a distribution of the gaps in performance (estimated performance – real performance) estimated by the regression and the real performance in order to check normality. To examine the relationship between somatotype, cormic index and the speed race, an equation of multiple regressions was performed. The distribution of the gaps in performance (estimated performance - real performance) estimated by the regression and real performance is normally distributed both in girls and boys. The results also indicate that a multiple and statistically significant link (p<0.05) exists between the performance and three (3) variables: endormorphy, ectomorphy and cormic index with boys and two (2) components of somatotype: endomorphy, mesomorphy with girls. The present study has allowed establishing a relationship between the performance at speed race and some of the components of the somatotype. The performance at 100m for boys and 80m for girls is well the result of a specific morphotype (endomorph) limiting the realization of good performances by these sprinters.

The present study evaluates the impact of climate variability on water resources and population health in the coastal area of Cote d’Ivoire between Abidjan and Aboisso. First, hydroclimatic methods (Nicholson index) and statistical tests (Pettitt test, Hubert segmentation) were used for variability characterisation. Then, Thornthwaite Water balance method was used to evaluate water availability for aquifers recharge. Coefficient depletion method was also used to assess the impact of climate variability on surface water resources. The relationship between diseases occurence (AhigbeKoffikro and Samo) and rainfall pattern was evaluated through descriptive method. The results revealed important fluctuations of water resources levels at that time. The relationship rainfall-runoff showed with synchron trend that rivers flows regime was linked to rainfall. The impact on groundwater resources was explained by deficit of infiltrated water of about 35.49% and 22.61% after 1982 break at Abidjan airport and Bingerville stations respectively. Concerning health, 63% of malaria cases was observed against 2.85% for diarrhoea and 2.35% for helminthiasis. There was a strong relationship between rainfall and the diseases (malaria and diarrhoea).

In most countries, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a key role in driving sustainable economic growth and job creation; hence, the need to investigate factors (e.g., entrepreneurial factors) that influence SMEs’ sustainable growth (SMESG). This study provides an insight into entrepreneurs’ abilities (EAs) that affect SMESG in Côte d’Ivoire (a middle-income economy located in the West African region) and an assessment of the extent to which entrepreneurial orientation (EO) influences the EA–SMESG relationship. By using data from 320 Ivorian SMEs, the results of hypothesis testing confirm an association between SMESG and each EA dimension (creativity, risk control, relationship, and opportunity detection ability), learning ability excepted. As for the moderating effect of EO, the innovativeness in entrepreneurship positively and significantly regulates the EA–SMESG relationship; proactiveness positively regulates the relationship between almost all EA dimensions and SMESG; and risk tendency regulates the relationship EA–SMESG for creativity and risk-control ability. Based on major findings, management implications are formulated in relation to promoting SMEs’ sustainable growth. For example, in light of the impact of EA on SMESG, development actors can increase the efficiency of Ivorian SMEs through actions aiming at strengthening the abilities of entrepreneurs and managers.

The aim of this article was to investigate empirically the link between financial development and economic growth in Cote d’Ivoire using time series data covering the period of 1970-2014, both in short and long run. The Error correction model and cointegration method were performed to capture the short and long run dynamics of this relationship respectively. The cointegration test result showed evidence of long-run and significant causal between financial development and economic growth in Cote d’Ivoire during the study period. Furthermore, the coefficient of the error correction term (ECT) in the short-run dynamic model was statistically insignificant with inappropriate sign and weak. Consequently, the empirical evidence suggests that countries authorities should promote domestic private credit to boost liquidity level to ensure long-term price stability and strengthen local industries production capacities.
