ABSTRACT Aim The study outlined to evaluate the clinical, laboratory and microbiological efficacy of Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system on type 2 diabetes and nondiabetic adult chronic periodontitis patients. Materials and methods A total of 100 adult chronic periodontitis subjects were recruited voluntary for this study. Clinical [plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI) and clinical attachment loss (CAL)], laboratory (C-reactive protein levels and glycated hemoglobin) and microbiological parameters were measured prior to phase 1 therapy; at 3rd and 6th month post phase 1 therapy. Comparative assessment was done among all the patients that were divided into four groups with Student paired t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results The results of this study showed that there was significant decrease in clinical, laboratory and microbiological parameters from baseline to 6 months in all the groups (i.e. p < 0.01). The subjects under groups using Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system showed highly significant reduction to all the parameters as compared to subjects under groups using toothbrush. Conclusion There was strong correlation between periodontal diseases and systemic parameters. Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system with the access to interdentally area helps in preventing the accumulation of dental plaque biofilm, thus able to maintain the clinical, laboratory and microbiological parameters at much lower levels as compared to traditional tooth brushing after phase I therapy. ABSTRACT Aim The study was outlined to determine and assess the C-reactive protein (CRP) level in chronic periodontitis patients and to assess the CRP values after using Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system. Materials and methods A total of 100 adult chronic periodontitis subjects were recruited voluntarily for this study. Clinical assessment of plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, clinical attachment level and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were made prior to phase-1 therapy and at 7th and 15th day posttherapy. Effects of treatment were assessed by paired tests and analysis of variance by treatment group with baseline covariates. Comparative assessments were done among all the patients that were divided into four groups. Results The results of this study showed that there was 35% decrease in CRP level in periodontitis patients that used Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system without undergoing phase 1 (complete scaling and root planing) therapy. There was 100% decrease in CRP in group D (phase 1 therapy followed by use of Dental Air Force home dental cleaning system) as compare to group C (phase 1 therapy followed by use of toothbrush) where there were 89.61% decrease in CRP level from baseline to 15th day of recordings. Conclusion There was strong correlation between periodontal diseases and CRP level and as there is progression and remission of periodontal disease; CRP values follow the same. Aims: The aim of the study was to compare the genotoxic effect by assessing the micronucleus frequency (MNF), as a biomarker for DNA damage, in subjects with chronic periodontitis with and without type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods and Material: For the study, a total of 65 subjects were take and divided into three groups. Group A included 30 subjects with Generalised Chronic Periodontitis, Group Bincluded 30 Subjects with Chronic Periodontitis with type 2 diabetes mellitus and Group C included 5 systemically and periodontally healthy subjects. Periodontal clinical examination was carried out. A slide was prepared using the blood sample collected from the subjects which was fixed in 5% geimsa solution and was observed under the microscope. Later the scoring of micronuclei was done. Statistical analysis used: Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were carried out in the present study. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to find the significance of study parameters and test the equality of three or more means of more than two groups. Tukey’s post hoc analysis was used to compare parameters of each and every group. Results: The mean score of the micronuclei observed in group A, B and C were 10.23, 14.87 and 1 respectively i.e. group B showed significantly greater damage than other two groups. Conclusions: It was concluded that the score of micronucleus frequency may be considered as an important biomarker of genotoxic damage that is DNA damage in subjects with chronic localised as well as systemic diseases like type 2 diabetes, as well as Periodontal diseases.

Effective treatment of diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy remains a challenge. To assess the efficacy and safety ofα-lipoic acid (ALA) over 20 weeks, we conducted a multicenter randomized withdrawal open-label study, in which 45 patients with type 2 diabetes and symptomatic polyneuropathy were initially treated with ALA (600 mg tid) for 4 weeks (phase 1). Subsequently, responders were randomized to receive ALA (600 mg qd;n=16) or to ALA withdrawal (n=17) for 16 weeks (phase 2). During phase 1, the Total Symptom Score (TSS) decreased from 8.9 ± 1.8 points to 3.46 ± 2.0 points. During phase 2, TSS improved from 3.7 ± 1.9 points to 2.5 ± 2.5 points in the ALA treated group (p<0.05) and remained unchanged in the ALA withdrawal group. The use of analgesic rescue medication was higher in the ALA withdrawal group than ALA treated group (p<0.05). In conclusion, in type 2 diabetic patients with symptomatic polyneuropathy who responded to initial 4-week high-dose (600 mg tid) administration of ALA, subsequent treatment with ALA (600 mg qd) over 16 weeks improved neuropathic symptoms, whereas ALA withdrawal was associated with a higher use of rescue analgesic drugs.
