Abstract Background: The communication between health providers and patients influences the quality of medical care. The Communication Skills Assessment (CAT) is a reliable, validated tool, which was developed to assess interpersonal communication skills between physicians and patients. The purpose of this study was to obtain a Romanian version of the CAT (CAT_Ro), using a controlled and systematic process to translate and cross-culturally adapt the original questionnaire, since there are no validated instruments to assess healthcare professionals’ communication capability in Romania. Methods: The study was conducted in two Departments of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology from Bucharest, Romania, using a rigorous scientific methodology for the translation process, according to literature recommendations, implicating conceptual evaluation, semantics, and cultural adaptation, which involved several steps. The updated version was pre-tested in a pilot study, which included 89 outpatients. Results: The results showed a narrow range of variability in item interpretation, without differences in patients’ responses according to variables such as age, gender, education, disease type, number of previous visits with the same doctor. Conclusion: CAT-Ro is the result of a comprehensive process study. It represents the first translation and cultural adaptation in Romanian of an instrument able to assess the health providers’ communication skills, which was validated in a pilot study and is to be used in more extensive studies with patients from several specialties.

Background: high fracture rates throughout the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region have been reported. Major fractures rate increasing, primary care physicians need to be aware of risk assessment and prevention tools. Aims: The aim of this pilot study was to assess main issues of FRAX tool introduction into undergraduate medical education. Material and methods: Russian version of the IOF approved presentation on FRAX application procedure, results assessment and interpretation as well as Russian Association for Osteoporosis clinical guidelines and reference to www.osteoporoz.ru site have been provided to 248 undergraduate medical students. To increase osteoporosis related issues study motivation the students were asked to apply the Russian version of on-line FRAX calculator to assess risk fracture in their close relatives of appropriate age. Also the students were asked to create a FRAX assessment based patient management program. Results: 207 FRAX assessment reports were received as feedback. Derived intervention threshold was reached in 41 cases (19.8%), while in 45 reports (21.7%) body mass index (BMI) value was mistaken for a 10-year fracture risk. There were 123 cases of the students’ parents assessments. These subjects appeared to be quite young (median 48, range 42 – 62) and relatively healthy to report no fracture risk factors. The students’ grandparents or great-grandparents (68 cases) were assessed on rare occasions due to lack of information or absence of personal contacts between students and their relatives. The students reported appreciable difficulties in decision making. Lifestyle and diet modification were not included in 165 of recommendations, while calcium and vitamin D prescriptions were severely biased by TV advertising. The students reported that it was quite difficult for them to give the patients recommendations regarding the choice of drug and administration timeframe. Conclusion: pilot study of FRAX introduction into undergraduate medical education helped to ascertain several gaps in teaching of osteoporosis diagnosis, prevention and treatment to be covered during undergraduate medical education

ABSTRAK Indonesia dikenal dengan negara yang memiliki beragam suku, budaya, dan bahasa. Pada tahun 2010, data jumlah penduduk Indonesia yang paling terakhir menyatakan jumlah penduduk Indonesia sebesar 237,56 juta jiwa dengan 85.1% nya beragama Islam dan 288.405 penduduknya berprofesi sebagai seorang perawat. Pemahaman perawat tentang keperawatan transkultural saat ini sangatlah dibutuhkan. Agama, salah satu dari tujuh faktor yang menurut Leininger memiliki andil besar dalam mempengaruhi perilaku dan sikap para perawat maupun para klien. Simanjuntak (2011) berdasarkan studi kualitatif mengutarakan 13 karakteristik yang perlu di validasi sebagai karakteristik dari perawat Islam saat melakukan perawatan kepada klien. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk memvalidasi butir-butir gambaran identitas profesional perawat Islam Indonesia melalui rancang bangun dari lembar kaji. Desain dalam penelitian ini adalah validasi kuesioner terhadap faktor rancang bangun, dimensi dan construct validity. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melakukan pilot study terlebih dahulu di Rumah Sakit Cibabat dan Rumah Sakit Imanuel dengan kemudian meminta responden untuk mengisi kuesioner serta memberikan komentar terhadap setiap butir-butir pernyataan, Data aktual berasal dari Rumah Sakit Santosa Bandung, Rumah Sakit Meilia Cibubur, dan Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Koja Jakarta dengan cara meminta responden untuk mengisi kuesioner. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan metode snowballing kepada perawat Islam Indonesia yang bekerja di Bandung dan Jakarta. Data dianalisa dengan Cronbach α, didapatkan hasil pada uji validitas terhadap 13 karakteristik identitas profesional perawat Islam Indonesia masing-masing memiliki nilai Cronbach α >0,70. Hasil penelitian ini menyarankan agar perawat Islam Indonesia dapat menjadi perawat yang profesional dalam mengkaji diri agar dapat menuju keperawatan lintas budaya yang berkompetensi.   Kata Kunci: Validasi, Identitas Profesional, Perawat Islam Indonesia.   ABSTRACT Indonesia is known as a country with diverse in ethnic, cultural, and dialect. The population of Indonesian as declared in 2010 is 237.56 million, with 85.1% of them are Muslims and 288.405 people work as nurses. Religion is one of the seven factors that according Leininger determined the behavior and attitudes of nurses and clients. Therefore, understanding of transcultural nursing is imperatively necessary. In a qualitative study, Simanjuntak (2011) states 13 characteristics of Indonesian Islam nurse professional identity need to be validated. This study conducted to validate the grains picture of Indonesian Islam nurses professional identity through the design of identity assessment tool. This study validates the identity assessment tool, its design, dimensions and the construct validity. Pilot study was done in the Cibabat Hospital and Immanuel Hospital, and the actual data were collected from Santosa Bandung Hospital, Meilia Cibubur Hospital, and the Koja General Hospital in Jakarta. Samples were selected using snow-ball method among Islam nurses who work in Bandung and Jakarta. The result obtained on the validity of the 13 characteristics of professional identity of Indonesian Islam professional nurses with the value of Cronbach α> 0.70. The results of this study suggest that Indonesian Islam nurses can become a professional nurse in assessing themselves in order to lead a cross-cultural nursing competence. Abstract Lameness is a serious health concern for livestock species. Understanding individual animal response to pain and characterization of lameness are critical when developing appropriate treatments. The objectives of this pilot study was to evaluate two different lameness models and measures for determining response to induced lameness in meat goats. Lameness was induced by intraarticular injection into the left hind lateral claw distal interphalangeal joint with either amphotericin B (Amp-B) or kaolin-carrageenan (K-C). Response to lameness was characterized by behavior scoring, visual lameness scoring (VLS), infrared thermography (IRT) of the affected digit, pressure mat gait analysis (PMT), and plasma cortisol (CORT) analysis. Lame goats had higher VLS compared to controls (P = 0.003). Maximum temperatures measured in hooves from lame vs control goats were significantly higher (P = 0.003). Pressure mat analysis demonstrated, when compared to controls, lame goats had decreased force (P = 0.013), impulse (P = 0.007), contact pressure (P = 0.007), and contact area of the left hind limb (P = 0.009). Mean CORT levels 4 and 6 h after lameness induction were higher in lame goats (P = 0.005, P = 0.01). The two lameness methods reliably induced lameness of varying severity in healthy meat goats.

Objective: We sought to identify risk factors associated with long-term dysphagia, characterize changes in dysphagia over time, and evaluate the incidence of otolaryngology referrals for patients with long-term dysphagia following anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF). Methods: About 56 patients who underwent ACDF between May 2017 to February 2019 were included in the study. All patients were assessed for dysphagia using the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) survey preoperatively and late postoperatively (≥1 year). Additionally, 28 patients were assessed for dysphagia early postoperatively (2 weeks—3 months). Demographic data, medical comorbidities, intraoperative details, and post-operative otolaryngology referral rates were collected from electronic medical records. Results: Of the 56 patients enrolled, 21 patients (38%) had EAT-10 scores of 3 or more at long-term follow-up. None of the demographics, comorbidities, or surgical factors assessed were associated with long-term dysphagia. Patients who reported no long-term dysphagia had a mean EAT-10 score of 6.9 early postoperatively, while patients with long-term symptoms had a mean score of 18.1 ( P = .006). Of the 21 patients who reported persistent dysphagia symptoms, 3 (14%) received dysphagia testing or otolaryngology referrals post-operatively. Conclusion: Dysphagia is a notable side effect of ACDF surgery, but there are no significant demographics, comorbidities, or surgical risk factors that predict long-term dysphagia. Early postoperative characterization of dysphagia using the EAT-10 questionnaire can help predict long-term symptoms. There is inadequate screening and otolaryngology follow-up for patients with post-ACDF dysphagia.
