Algemeen wordt verondersteld dat een werknemer die geïdentificeerd wordt als talent binnen zijn of haar organisatie daar positief op reageert qua attitude (bv. door een sterkere betrokkenheid bij de organisatie) en gedrag (bv. door een grotere inzet op het werk). Indien dergelijke positieve reacties uitblijven, zouden organisaties namelijk moeten afstappen van de kerngedachte dat exclusief talentmanagement meerwaarde creëert door onevenredige investeringen te doen in talenten in vergelijking met de 'gemiddelde' werknemer. In dit artikel evalueren we alle bestaand onderzoek naar werknemersreacties op talentmanagement, met als doel na te gaan of bovenstaande basisveronderstelling klopt. De resultaten van ons literatuuronderzoek zijn minder eenduidig dan verwacht. Hoewel vele, zij het niet alle, studies bewijs vinden voor positieve reacties bij talenten, tonen de resultaten van meerdere studies ook aan dat de identificatie als talent aanzienlijke risico's inhoudt. Zo zullen werknemers die geïdentificeerd worden als talent bijvoorbeeld veeleisender worden in hun verwachtingen naar hun werkgever toe, en voelen ze zich onder sterke druk gezet om aan hoge prestatienormen te voldoen. We interpreteren deze resultaten vanuit de kaders van de social exchange theory, de psychologische-contracttheorie en andere theorieën die vaak worden toegepast in talentmanagementonderzoek. Op basis hiervan identificeren we mogelijke randvoorwaarden voor effectief talentmanagement in de HRM-praktijk.It is generally assumed that employees identified as talents by their organizations will react positively to this status both in terms of attitudes (e.g., increased organizational commitment) and behaviour (e.g., increased work effort). Should such positive reactions fail to manifest, the core assumption that exclusive talent management adds value to organizations, through disproportionate investments in above-average employees leading to disproportionate returns, may be untenable. In the present article we evaluate the existing empirical research on employee reactions to talent management, with the aim of weighing the evidence for the above assumption. The results of our literature review are less straightforward than expected. Although many, but not all, studies find some evidence for positive reactions among talents, multiple studies also show that being identified as a talent entails risks and side effects. For example, employees (knowingly) identified as talents will become more demanding towards their employer, but also feel more pressure to conform to strict performance standards. We interpret these findings from the frameworks of social exchange theory, psychological contract theory, and other theories often applied to talent management research. Based on all of the above we identify a number of potential boundary conditions to effective talent management in HRM practice.

It is assumed that employees display favorable attitudes (e.g., high organizational commitment) and behaviors (e.g., high work effort) when identified as organizational talent. If they did not, the idea that talent management creates value by making disproportionate investments into organizational talent would need to be reconsidered. We reviewed the literature to explore whether the assumed favorable reactions among talent are valid and the results are not straightforward. Many studies found evidence for the assumption; however, several studies revealed that talent designation bears considerable risks: Being identified as talent creates (overly optimistic) expectations of receiving rewards and benefits from the organization and it increases the felt pressure to meet high performance standards. We discuss the findings in the light of social exchange theory, psychological contract theory, and others commonly used in talent-management research, highlighting key issues regarding talent designation and identifying avenues for future research.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the direct and conditional indirect effects of employees’ perception of psychological contract fulfillment on their positive voice, i.e., promotive voice and prohibitive voice, through the integrated framework of the social exchange theory and the group value model. Design/methodology/approach Using a two-source data collection from the employee and supervisor, cross-sectional data were collected from 234 participants working in one of the leading non-profit organizations in Pakistan. After initial data screening, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test for the factorial validity of the employed measures with AMOS. The hypothesized relationships were tested in regression analysis with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings The results of this study supported the integration of the social exchange theory with the group value model in explaining the direct and indirect positive effects of employees’ perception of psychological contract fulfillment on their promotive and prohibitive voices through the mediation of organizational identification (OID). Furthermore, it was also recorded that the indirect effect was conditional on the employees’ perception of the relative psychological contract fulfillment which significantly moderated the direct relationship between psychological contract fulfillment and OID. However, no such effect was recorded for the moderating effect of power distance orientation between OID and the both voices. Originality/value In addressing the recently published research calls, this study broadens the horizon of existing research on psychological contract and employee positive voice by investigating the mediating and the moderating factors that influence this relationship.

Purpose-The purpose of this study is to examine the influences of ethical leadership and talent management on hotel front desk employees’ performance. This study also tests the mediating effect of employee commitment in the relationship between ethical leadership, talent management and employee performance. Leader member exchange theory and social exchange theory has been used as the underlying theories for the framework in this study.Methodology-Data is collected through online questionnaire distributed to front desk employees working in One-star, two- star and three-star hotels around Malaysia particularly in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. 150 usable questionnaires are collected from the targeted respondents. Sample size have been identified using G power software and Partial Least Square (PLS) is used to analyze data.Findings - The findings of this study show that the ethical leadership does not have significant relationship with employee commitments, while talent management has a positive and significant relationship with employee commitments. This study also confirms the mediating effect of employee commitments between the relationship of talent management and employee performance.Contribution -The current study contributes towards the body of knowledge by incorporating leader member exchange theory and social exchange theory. This study also contributes by proving the mediating effect of employee commitment in the hotel industry. The study provides information for hotel managers about why and under what circumstances employees perform better.

Applications of social exchange theory in organizational research have tended to ignore the resource context and its impact on a focal dyadic social exchange. Integrating insights from the social exchange theory and the conservation of resources theory, we examine the role of resource availability in the social exchange of resources. The type of social exchange we focus on is the psychological contract. Specifically, we examine the antecedents and consequence of breach of employee obligations to an employer. We test our predictions using multisource data obtained from employees over three measurement periods in Sample 1 and matched triads (employee, supervisor, and coworker) in Sample 2. We found that family–work conflict (FWC) and breach of employer obligations are positively, while conscientiousness is negatively, related to employees’ perceptions of breach of their obligations. Conscientiousness moderated the FWC–breach relationship: Employees low on conscientiousness have a stronger positive relationship between FWC and breach of employee obligations. Breach of employee obligations is, in turn, negatively related to employee career progression (a job promotion over the following year in Sample 1 and supervisor-rated promotability in Sample 2). Findings highlight the interconnected nature of demands, resources, and obligations and that dyadic social exchange obligations should be examined in the context of other demands.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to shed light on the unexplored characteristics of labor relations in Nepal against the backdrop of social exchange theory as it relates to labor relations.Design/methodology/approachThe paper considers the psychological contract of promises and expectations from the social exchange theory on the ground in Nepal. To do so, the paper adopts an inductive method of investigation and reviews dispersed and unstructured archival data.FindingsIn terms of the psychological contract of promises and expectations, Nepalese workers and trade unions appear to have constituted a pressure group since they aligned themselves with Nepal's political parties. Consequently, the legal labor framework and behaviors of trade unions have produced highly politicized labor relations; very high and dense union memberships; vocal unions; a labor-supportive legal framework; union-influenced government and union-driven enterprise-level collective bargaining and collective dispute settlement.Originality/valueThe paper claims that although the system framework has flimsy prospects elsewhere in the world, it is strong in Nepal as a result of the recent Labor Act of 2017. For this very reason, the paper argues that Nepal's trade unions are in their sturdiest position ever and, therefore, that the country has evaded the crisis experienced in advanced and emerging economies in other parts of world. In theoretical terms, the article contributes from the social exchange theoretical perspective to the literature on the psychological contract of promises and expectations. It also has a bearing on emerging discourses and debates about the revitalization or reshaping of traditional industrial relations.

The core objective of this paper is to examine the effect of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) on penetration of risk services company in Nigeria. Therefore, there is a dire need to explore this issue in the future. However, this paper drive is on effects and significance of OCB on risk services company in Nigeria. Secondary data is adopted for the review, assessment of variables and concepts of related literature, sourced from institutional material, organisational behaviourist, and articles from scholarly journal. Furthermore, this study finds out that there is significant relationship between OCB and risk services company in Nigeria. It also reveals that citizenship behavioural effort is not limited to augment effectiveness of organisations but to enhance relationships among staffs, diligent to work and value to customers according to social exchange theory. OCB as a strategy will solve penetration issues in Risk services companies.

Using social exchange theory, this article presents a new theory for understanding the strategic choices made by social movement leaders—the “movement exchanges” theory. It looks at how leaders engage in exchanges of valued rewards with constituencies, institutional political players, bystander publics, and voluntary organizations. Leaders receive from these players important rewards (like committed activists, political leverage, and resources) for achieving movement goals. In turn, leaders make strategic choices (expressed in frames, tactics, targets, and claims) that other players find rewarding, favoring persistent exchanges across time. By considering movements’ simultaneous exchanges with several players, the theory makes sense of choices that remain puzzling for major movement theories. It also blends strategic behavior with culture (in the form of utopias, ideology, and emotions) but does not require the maximizing assumption of the homo economicus. I use the case of the contemporary Chilean student movement to illustrate the theory.

Although research has made significant gains in understanding the constitutive nature of conversation in the process of organizing, its predictive effects on organizational outcomes are still uncertain. To contribute in this direction, based on social exchange theory and leader-member exchange (LMX) research, this study examined the predictive effects of leader-member conversational quality (LMCQ) on employee organizational commitment (OC), and the potential interaction effects of LMCQ with LMX quality. Using data from an online survey, this study found that above and beyond communication frequency and other control variables, LMCQ is significantly associated with employee OC. More interestingly, the effects of LMCQ vary based on the level of LMX quality. These findings have significant implications at both theoretical and practical levels.

In recent years, scholars have increasingly recognized that the theoretical underpinnings of employee-organization relationships (EOR) are in need of further extension in light of recent organizational changes. In prior research, the study of EOR has been based on social exchange theory, and the psychological contract (PC) has played a central role in understanding this crucial aspect of organizational life. The main objective of this paper is to provide an integration of the existing literature by adopting a multiple-foci exchange relationships approach. Specifically, we looked at identification; the quality of relationships and exchanges with the leader, coworkers, and other organizational agents; justice perceptions involving several organizational sources; and perceived organizational, leader, and coworker support to expand our understanding of the PC. Overall, we advocate a multiple-foci exchange relationships approach that will ultimately enable us to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the complex nature of PCs in 21st century organizations.
