Various porous materials are widely used in various industries, such as chemical, metallurgical, energy, light, food, etc. Therefore, a comprehensive study of their structure and physical and technical properties is of great scientific and technological importance. The article presents the results of determining and studying the volume and density of porous sample materials using a new experimental method. The determination of the volume and density of waterproof samples of any complex shape can be easily determined on the basis of Archimedes ' law. However, it is impossible to determine the volume and density of porous water-absorbing samples of complex shape directly using this law. The article presents new experimental methods (methods) for determining the volume and density of such porous samples of complex shape. The results of experimental work carried out using the proposed new methods are presented and analyzed.

Various porous solid materials are widely used in engineering, technology, and various industries; therefore, the study of their physical properties is of great scientific and practical importance. The article describes the methods for determining and the results of experimental work on the study of water-absorbing properties of light porous materials. Light porous materials, the density of which is less than water, are considered as objects of research. Mathematical design conditions for the application of a new experimental method for studying such light porous materials are presented. Specific examples of the application of the proposed experimental method are given. Expanded clay materials, the density of which fluctuates within 250-800, were taken as objects of research in the conducted experimental work. The scientific, practical and educational values of the results obtained are shown.

The article presents an analysis of the possibilities of the previously unused method for the experimental study of porous permeable materials and the determination of their structural characteristics. The purpose of the experiment is to determine the geometric parameters of the porous matrix, which integrates the characteristics of the porous material. An example of analytical scanning of a porous structure is considered. A review of existing experimental methods is given. A scheme of the experimental setup, methods for conducting a capillary experiment and processing the data obtained are proposed. As an example, a mathematical model of the experiment is used, illustrating the possible results of the study of a porous sample. It is shown how the results of experiments are transformed into a porous matrix and are interpreted as its capillary scanning. It is proved that this model of porous structure can be used as a starting position in the mathematical calculations of the processes occurring in porous structures.

Studies of sewage sludge conditioning by ultrasonic field concentrate on determination of the increase of water removal effect, which depends on kind of sludge and chemical compounds used in the dewatering process. An attempt was made to find new methods of sludge preparation before dewatering. Tests presented here focused on digested and difficult dewatered sludge. The sludge was dewatered on a vacuum filter after conditioning with polyelectrolytes and the ultrasonic field. The microscopic analysis was an additional criterion to evaluate changes in the sludge structure after preparation. The polyelectrolyte dose of 3 mg/g d.m. sonicated within 15 sec. resulted in the 50% decrease of sludge volume. Results presented confirmed our previous experiences, concerning the relation between conglomerates of sludge and the effect of dewatering.

Background: Zishen Tongguan (ZSTG) capsules were prepared at the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and have been proven to be clinically effective for treating pyelonephritis and benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, the quality standards are not ideal; a comprehensive study of the “quality markers” (Q-markers), the chemicals inherent in traditional Chinese medicine and its preparations, has not been carried out. Experimental Methods: In this paper, a sensitive and specific ultra-high-performance liquid chromatographictandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of eight potential Q-markers of ZSTG, including timosaponin A3, berberine, jatrorrhizine, phellodendrine, palmatine, mangiferin, neomangiferin, and timosaponin BII. A Kromasil 100-3.5 C18 column was used with a mobile phase of 0.2% formic acid with acetonitrile, and gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.2 mL/min was achieved in 13 minutes and used for separation. Detection was performed in positive/negative mode with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). Results: The analytical method was validated in terms of the sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, repeatability, stability and recovery. The method established here was successfully applied to study the potential Q-markers in 8 batches of commercial samples, which demonstrated its use in improving the quality control of ZSTG. Conclusion: The developed method had high repeatability and accuracy and was suitable for the simultaneous analysis of multiple Q-markers, which may provide a new basis for the comprehensive assessment and overall quality control of ZSTG.

Reliable cytopathological diagnosis requires new methods and approaches for the rapid and accurate determination of all cell types. This is especially important when the number of cells is limited, such as in the cytological samples of fine-needle biopsy. Immunoplasmonic-multiplexed- labeling may be one of the emerging solutions to such problems. However, to be accepted and used by the practicing pathologists, new methods must be compatible and complementary with existing cytopathology approaches where counterstaining is central to the correct interpretation of immunolabeling. In addition, the optical detection and imaging setup for immunoplasmonic-multiplexed-labeling must be implemented on the same cytopathological microscope, not interfere with standard H&E imaging, and operate as a second easy-to-use imaging method. In this article, we present multiplex imaging of four types of nanoplasmonic markers on two types of H&E-stained cytological specimens (formalin-fixed paraffin embedded and non-embedded adherent cancer cells) using a specially designed adapter for SI dark-field microscopy. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed optical method for quantitative and multiplex identification of various plasmonic NPs, and the possibility of using immunoplasmonic-multiplexed-labeling for cytopathological diagnostics.

1. Serological methods for the determination of smallpox immunity are briefly discussed, and it is concluded that they are unlikely to provide a diagnostic method of sufficient accuracy.2. Experimental work is recorded which shows certain differences in the response of previously vaccinated individuals, revaccinated simultaneously with a standard vaccine lymph and an elementary body suspension (vaccinia) of high potency. The significance of these differences is discussed.3. The results indicate that although the advantage of the e.b. suspension over vaccine lymph is relatively insignificant, that of two insertions over one is very marked. In revaccination the routine use of one insertion only may result in a certain number of semi-immunes (vaccinoids) being erroneously reported as immunes.4. It is concluded that if the two insertion technique be practised, persons showing immune reactions (negatives) may be considered, in all probability, as possessing full immunity to vaccinia-variola virus.
