Abstract. Application of the environmentally friendly scaling inhibitor NC47.1 B in geothermal systems was studied in laboratory and field-scale experiments. Biodegradation was investigated under anaerobic, in situ-like conditions and a mass balance confirmed the almost complete conversion of the polycarboxylate to e.g. acetate, formate, methane and CO2. Much higher concentrations of inhibitor were chosen than applied in situ and rapid degradation was observed in biofilm-inoculated setups: A concentration of 100 mg/L of the inhibitor was degraded below detection limit within 8 d of incubation. Furthermore, the inhibitor was applied at the geothermal plant in Unterhaching, Germany. Monitoring of the microbial community in situ showed an increase in the abundance of Bacteria. Particularly, relatives of the fermenting Caldicellulosiruptor dominated the biocenosis after about six months of continuous inhibitor dosage (5–10 mg/L). However, in long-term laboratory experiments representatives of Caldicellulosiruptor were only detected in traces and the microbial community comprised a broader spectrum of fermentative bacteria. The different composition of the biocenosis in situ and in laboratory experiments is probably caused by the different inhibitor concentrations, temperatures as well as nutrient availability in situ compared to the closed system of the batch experiments.

The objective of this study was to develop cyanobacteria remote sensing models using Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) as an alternative to shipboard monitoring efforts in Lake Champlain. The approach allowed for estimation of cyanobacteria directly from satellite images, calibrated and validated with 4 years of in situ monitoring data from Lake Champlain's Long-Term Water Quality and Biological Monitoring Program (LTMP). The resulting stepwise regression model was applied to entire satellite images to provide distribution of cyanobacteria throughout the surface waters of Lake Champlain. The results demonstrate the utility of remote sensing for estimating the distribution of cyanobacteria in inland waters, which can be further used for presenting the initiation and propagation of cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Champlain.

The expanded granular sludge blanket reactor (EGSB) was operated for 198 days to study the long-term effects of phenanthrene (PHE) enrichment on system performance and microbial community. The results showed that the PHE was significantly enriched in the reactor. The final PHE concentration in effluent and sludge reached to 1.764±0.05 mg/L and 12.52±0.42 mg/gTS, respectively. While the average daily methane production was decreased by 5.0%-9.8% under long-term PHE exposure. The 3D-EEM of effluent indicated that PHE stimulated the microbial metabolism with the higher intensity of soluble microbial byproduct-like materials (SMP) and proteins. Moreover, the removal efficiency of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and NH4+-N gradually diminished with the enrichment of PHE. PHE shaped the microbial community, and the predominant fermentative bacteria (Mesotoga) was severely inhibited. Contrarily, the bacteria (Syntrophorhabdus, Acinetobacter, Desulfovibrio, Desulfomicrobium) involved in PHE-degradation was enriched at end of Phase V. In addition, the relative abundance (RA) of hydrotrophic methanogens (Methanofastidiosum, Methanolinea, Methanobacterium, Methanomassiliicoccus) increased by 0.96-fold with the long-term enrichment of PHE, while the RA of acetoclastic Methanosaeta obviously decreased.
