Application of Image Processing and Big Data Science for Flood Label Detection

<p>Due to the importance of object detection in video analysis and image annotation, it is widely utilized in a number of computer vision tasks such as face recognition, autonomous vehicles, activity recognition, tracking objects and identity verification. Object detection does not only involve classification and identification of objects within images, but also involves localizing and tracing the objects by creating bounding boxes around the objects and labelling them with their respective prediction scores. Here, we leverage and discuss how connected vision systems can be used to embed cameras, image processing, Edge Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data connectivity capabilities for flood label detection. We favored the engineering definition of label detection that a label is a sequence of discrete measurable observations obtained using a capturing device such as web cameras, smart phone, etc. We built a Big Data service of around 1000 images (image annotation service) including the image geolocation information from various flooding events in the Carolinas (USA) with a total of eight different object categories. Our developed platform has several smart AI tools and task configurations that can detect objects’ edges or contours which can be manually adjusted with a threshold setting so as to best segment the image. The tool has the ability to train the dataset and predict the labels for large scale datasets which can be used as an object detector to drastically reduce the amount of time spent per object particularly for real-time image-based flood forecasting.  This research is funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF).</p>

For autonomous vehicles, it is critical to be aware of the driving environment to avoid collisions and drive safely. The recent evolution of convolutional neural networks has contributed significantly to accelerating the development of object detection techniques that enable autonomous vehicles to handle rapid changes in various driving environments. However, collisions in an autonomous driving environment can still occur due to undetected obstacles and various perception problems, particularly occlusion. Thus, we propose a robust object detection algorithm for environments in which objects are truncated or occluded by employing RGB image and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) bird’s eye view (BEV) representations. This structure combines independent detection results obtained in parallel through “you only look once” networks using an RGB image and a height map converted from the BEV representations of LiDAR’s point cloud data (PCD). The region proposal of an object is determined via non-maximum suppression, which suppresses the bounding boxes of adjacent regions. A performance evaluation of the proposed scheme was performed using the KITTI vision benchmark suite dataset. The results demonstrate the detection accuracy in the case of integration of PCD BEV representations is superior to when only an RGB camera is used. In addition, robustness is improved by significantly enhancing detection accuracy even when the target objects are partially occluded when viewed from the front, which demonstrates that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional RGB-based model.

Big data in agriculture, manufacturing, and education are varied such as voluminous text, images, and graphs. Applying Big data science techniques (e.g., functional algorithms) for extracting intelligence data affords decision markers quick response to productivity, market resilience, and student enrollment challenges in today's unpredictable markets. This chapter serves to employ data science for potential solutions to Big Data applications in the sectors of agriculture, manufacturing and education to a lesser extent, using modern technological tools such as Hadoop, Hive, Sqoop, and MongoDB.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are becoming more and more popular today. CNNs now have become a popular feature extractor applying to image processing, big data processing, fog computing, etc. CNNs usually consist of several basic units like convolutional unit, pooling unit, activation unit, and so on. In CNNs, conventional pooling methods refer to 2×2 max-pooling and average-pooling, which are applied after the convolutional or ReLU layers. In this paper, we propose a Multiactivation Pooling (MAP) Method to make the CNNs more accurate on classification tasks without increasing depth and trainable parameters. We add more convolutional layers before one pooling layer and expand the pooling region to 4×4, 8×8, 16×16, and even larger. When doing large-scale subsampling, we pick top-k activation, sum up them, and constrain them by a hyperparameter σ. We pick VGG, ALL-CNN, and DenseNets as our baseline models and evaluate our proposed MAP method on benchmark datasets: CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, SVHN, and ImageNet. The classification results are competitive.

When the number of data generating sensors increases and the amount of sensing data grows to a scale that traditional methods cannot handle, big data methods are needed for sensing applications. However, big data is a fuzzy data science concept and there is no existing research architecture for it nor a generic application structure in the field of sensing. In this survey, we explore many scattered results that have been achieved by combining big data techniques with sensing and present our vision of big data in sensing. Firstly, we outline the application categories to generally summarize existing research achievements. Then we discuss the techniques proposed in these studies to demonstrate challenges and opportunities in this field. Finally, we present research trends and list some directions of big data in future sensing. Overall, mobile sensing and its related studies are hot topics, but other large-scale sensing researches are flourishing too. Although there are no “big data” techniques acting as research platforms or infrastructures to support various applications, multiple data science technologies, such as data mining, crowd sensing, and cloud computing, serve as foundations and bases of big data in the world of sensing.

For smart mobility, autonomous vehicles, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs), perception of the environment is an important task in scene analysis and understanding. Better perception of the environment allows for enhanced decision making, which, in turn, enables very high-precision actions. To this end, we introduce in this work a new real-time deep learning approach for 3D multi-object detection for smart mobility not only on roads, but also on railways. To obtain the 3D bounding boxes of the objects, we modified a proven real-time 2D detector, YOLOv3, to predict 3D object localization, object dimensions, and object orientation. Our method has been evaluated on KITTI’s road dataset as well as on our own hybrid virtual road/rail dataset acquired from the video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V. The evaluation of our method on these two datasets shows good accuracy, but more importantly that it can be used in real-time conditions, in road and rail traffic environments. Through our experimental results, we also show the importance of the accuracy of prediction of the regions of interest (RoIs) used in the estimation of 3D bounding box parameters.

Automated driving and vehicle safety systems need object detection. It is important that object detection be accurate overall and robust to weather and environmental conditions and run in real-time. As a consequence of this approach, they require image processing algorithms to inspect the contents of images. This article compares the accuracy of five major image processing algorithms: Region-based Fully Convolutional Network (R-FCN), Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN), Single Shot Multi-Box Detector (SSD), RetinaNet, and You Only Look Once v4 (YOLOv4). In this comparative analysis, we used a large-scale Berkeley Deep Drive (BDD100K) dataset. Their strengths and limitations are analyzed based on parameters such as accuracy (with/without occlusion and truncation), computation time, precision-recall curve. The comparison is given in this article helpful in understanding the pros and cons of standard deep learning-based algorithms while operating under real-time deployment restrictions. We conclude that the YOLOv4 outperforms accurately in detecting difficult road target objects under complex road scenarios and weather conditions in an identical testing environment.
