Abstract. The paper describes the early history of EISCAT, from the very first ideas and Nordic contacts in the late 1960s to the end of the main development phase, when the facility had become a very advanced and reliable research instrument and its users had developed full competence in the second half of the 1980s. The preparation of the ''Green Book'', the Beynon meeting in London in 1973 and the activities started there, the first EISCAT Council meeting, the ''technical period'' 1976–1981, the inauguration in 1981 and the decade of improvements in most of the 1980s are described as seen from the Swedish point of view.

AbstractThe functional morphology of the insect compound eye is reviewed with special reference to its surface and volume relationships with the rest of the head and its evolutionary development. Measurements of the more important parameters of the eyes of 28 species representing 14 major orders are given and interpreted in relation to this review. Recent histological and biophysical work on insect vision is also reviewed and some conclusions, especially those concerning the limit of sensitivity in the ultra-violet, are shown to be consistent with current theories of the early history of the oceans, the atmosphere, and of life.

The vast number and variety of sequences, those liturgical interpolations which in the middle ages commonly followed the repetition of the Alleluia in the Mass, and the freedom of their development, show that they were an outlet for the creative talents of musicians and poets. A sample of sequences from successive periods allows the literary historian to trace the development of rhyme and accentual meter, and a musicologist has described the sequence ‘as the parent of oratorio and the grandparent of modern drama.’ But while a view which encompasses centuries reveals to us variety and change, the compositions of any given time were largely shaped by inherited traditions. Not the least value of studies on the early history of the sequence is their demonstration of the close connection between various Alleluia melodies and their sequences and the way in which appropriate texts were fitted to melodies for specific feasts.

It is argued that sociology lacks an adequate conceptualization of the museum/society relationship. It is further argued (1) that the museum is an agency of classification; (2) that it is a relationship of cultural interdependence and (3) that museums have an internal relationship to modernization. The institution of the museum is shown to arise out of the indeterminacies of modernization. A dispute in the early history of London's Tate Gallery is explored as it illuminates that institution's organization of the contradictions of modernization. Pace Bourdieu and Elias, a key contradiction is seen to arise from a differentiation of the field of power and the cultural field. It is argued, against essentialist accounts of museums, that the Tate produced its point of view through the medium of this contradiction.

Sufism is a spiritual philosophy based on morals and intuition. It has affected the daily lives of Muslims and their behaviours as well. Actually, Sufism itself since its development has changed in terms of values, since it involves other knowledge which influences the purity of its teachings. To study the concept of Sufism and the history of its development, maintaining the purity of Sufism and returning it to the original teachings of tassawuf is needed especially in regards to Ibn Khaldun’s views since he is one of the scholars who emphasises the discussion and study of Sufism seriously and comprehensively. It can be seen by his objective in evaluating Sufism and producing the point of view to Sufism. Even as a historian and social expert, he also discusses the questions of Sufism from the root of the problem and its impact on the social life of Muslims. This study aims to analyse Ibn Khaldun’s views on the reality of Sufism and the history of its development with special reference to Shifa’ al-Sa’il wa Tahdhib al-Masa’il. To achieve these objectives, the library research method incorporating data collection and data analysis was used. Data analysis was done inductively and deductively. The results of the study have shown that Ibn Khaldun puts his own definition of Sufism comprehensively which is known as mujahadah. The concept of Mujahadah, according to him runs parallel to the history of the knowledge development and practices of Sufism. It began with mujahadah of taqwa, known among the early Sufis as zuhud and wara‘. Furthermore, mujahadah istiqamah and kashf are known as laduni or Sufism.

Having done me the honour of exhibiting to the Society of Antiquaries in March 1824, a rough draft of a Map of Roman Norfolk, with other Plans which related to Norwich, I now beg leave to transmit to the Society through you a more finished Map, accompanied by a descriptive Outline of the Roman Remains in that county: and in so doing I cannot but suggest, that if others, conversant with antiquarian pursuits, would construct similar Maps of other counties of Great Britain, the whole might form the basis of a Map of Roman Britain, which is much wanted. The advantages resulting, would, I am convinced, fully compensate the labour; much light would be thrown upon the works of Gale, Horsley, Reynolds, and other learned Antiquaries, who have written on the Itinerary of Antoninus; and the early history of this country be placed in a much clearer point of view than it has hitherto been. The accurate Surveys which have been taken of every County have removed the obstacles which before impeded such an attempt; and these, combined with the geological researches which have of late years been made, particularly in our maritime counties, afford sure data for such an undertaking.

In 1994, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) Libraries founded a College Librarian Program. Begun with four librarians serving four colleges, it has since grown to include eleven librarians providing comprehensive library services to the six of Virginia Tech’s eight colleges not served by branch libraries. Other authors have described the early history of the program or outlined some of its specific elements.1 By reviewing how the program came to be, by analyzing the choice points it presents, especially from an administrative perspective, and by discussing its benefits and costs from a university point of view, the authors hope to illuminate an exciting and potentially beneficial approach that other large institutions might seek to adapt to their own missions.
