As cultural sector practice becomes increasingly dependent on digital technologies for the production, display, and dissemination of art and material heritage, it is important that those working in the sector understand the basic scientific principles underpinning these technologies and the social, political and economic implications of exploiting them. The understanding of issues in cultural heritage preservation and digital heritage begins in the education of the future stakeholders and the innovative integration of technologies into the curriculum. This paper gives an example of digital technology skills embedded into a module in the interdisciplinary UCL Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, named “Technologies in Arts and Cultural Heritage”, at University College London.

ABSTRACTThis article focuses on conceptual and methodological issues concerning the contribution that digital technologies can provide to School education in the context of the teaching and learning of history in matters related to cultural heritage process. Brazil has the “Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional” (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage) to implement public policies in order to to preserve their culture. In partnership with the “Universidade Federal do Pará” (Federal University of Pará), the unit of the institute in the state of Pará has developed a tool of heritage education called “Ver-o-Site”, an online page with the objective of increasing the cultural appreciation of Ver-o-Peso, the largest free fair in Latin America, a cultural and touristical symbol, and also the starting point of this state capital, the city of Belém. As we evaluate the considerable importance that digital technologies like this have on students' lives, creating new forms and speed of access and sharing of information, we consider that educators must use them as educational tools. With the Ver-oSite, you can work aspects of colonial occupation process, historical, economic and social development of urban areas in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as the space that places like the Ver-o-Peso occupy in the cultural heritage of inhabitants of cities like Belém. Such action aims to strengthen the role of social formation of the school with students in the digital age.RESUMOEste trabalho objetiva discutir fundamentos conceituais e teórico-metodológicos relativos à contribuição que tecnologias digitais podem fornecer a educação escolar no contexto do processo de ensino-aprendizagem da disciplina história em assuntos relacionados ao patrimônio cultural. O Brasil conta com o Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional para executar políticas públicas de preservação de sua cultura. Em parceria com a Universidade Federal do Pará, a unidade do instituto no Estado Pará desenvolveu uma ferramenta de educação patrimonial chamada Ver-o-Site, uma página on-line voltada à valorização cultural do Ver-o-Peso, a maior feira livre da América Latina, símbolo cultural, turísti-co e ponto de origem da capital deste estado, a cidade de Belém. Avaliando o espaço considerável que tecnologias digitais como esta têm na vida dos alunos, gerando novas formas e velocidade de acesso e socialização de informação, pondera-se que os educadores devam utilizá-las como ferramentas educativas. Com o Ver-o-Site, pode-se trabalhar aspectos do proces-so de ocupação colonial, formação histórica, econômica e social de núcleos urbanos da Amazônia brasileira, bem como o espaço que lugares como o Ver-o-Peso ocupam no patrimônio cultural de habitantes de cidades como Belém. The concept of cultural heritage has evolved over time. In relation to a context where digital technologies and ICT are changing our everyday lives and the way to visualize, experience, and think, the growth of digital heritage poses new issues in the conceptual and operative relationship with real contents. The chapter reflects on the concept of tangible heritage, presents issues in heritage digitalization, and highlights the new relationships that the real dimension and the digital sphere of heritage establish, according to advanced frontiers of mixed heritage. Pressing topics are the matters of interpretation and presentation of heritage, the transparency of digital communication, and the participation of people in cultural content through digital content production, sharing, re-elaboration.

   Our relationship with cultural heritage has been transformed by digital technologies. Opportunities have emerged to preserve and access cultural heritage material while engaging an audience at both regional and global level. Accessibility of technology has enabled audiences to participate in digital heritage curation process. Participatory practices and co-production methodologies have created new relationships between museums and communities, as they are engaged to become active participants in the co-design and co-creation of heritage material. Audiences are more interested in experiences vs services nowadays and museums and heritage organisations have potential to entertain while providing engaging experiences beyond their physical walls. Mixed reality is an emerging method of engagement that has allowed enhanced interaction beyond traditional 3D visualisation models into fully immersive worlds. There is potential to transport audiences to past worlds that enhance their experience and understanding of cultural heritage.

AbstractDigital technologies fundamentally transform teaching and learning in higher education environments, with the pace of technological change exacerbating the challenge. Due to the current pandemic situation, higher education environments are all now forced to move away from traditional teaching and learning structures that are simply no longer adaptable to the challenges of rapidly changing educational environments. This research develops a conceptual model and employs Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Partial least Squares (PLS) to examine the impact of information and digital literacy on 249 Finnish university staff and students’ intention to use digital technologies. The findings show the complex interrelationship between literacy skills and digital technologies among university staff and students. The results illustrate that information literacy has a direct and significant impact on intention to use; while, unlike our expectation, digital literacy does not have a direct impact on the intention to use. However, its effect is mediated through performance expectancy and effort expectancy. The authors suggest that to understand the changes that are taking place in higher education environment, more attention needs to be paid to redefining policies and strategies in order to enhance individuals’ willingness to use digital technologies within higher education environments.

Recent advances in semantic web and deep learning technologies enable new means for the computational analysis of vast amounts of information from the field of digital humanities. We discuss how some of the techniques can be used to identify historical and cultural symmetries between different characters, locations, events or venues, and how these can be harnessed to develop new strategies to promote intercultural and cross-border aspects that support the teaching and learning of history and heritage. The strategies have been put to the test in the context of the European project CrossCult, revealing enormous potential to encourage curiosity to discover new information and increase retention of learned information.

Abstract The ability to publish and provide access to cultural resources via free, open source digital platforms is empowering Vietnamese cultural professionals to promote their culture to local and international audiences. Digitization projects now include the use of 3D, VR, and AR digital technologies for the purpose of being published on digital platforms. This is creating an emergent digital culture in Vietnam, with an increasing amount of available resources online. Digitization projects are now used to preserve cultural heritage as well as to present and promote contemporary art and culture. This reflects a change in practices amongst cultural professionals in Hanoi, in terms of how digital technologies are used and the value placed on making cultural resources publicly accessible online. However, as new content, knowledge, and voices are able to participate in the online discourse on art and culture, the question remains as to whether this digital transition is creating greater equality and inclusion in the cultural sector or if it is exacerbating already existing forms of digital cultural colonialism. This paper presents findings from 50 interviews with cultural professionals working in the cultural sector in Hanoi about their digitization projects and digital work practices, the developments in digitization in Hanoi’s cultural sector over the past five years, how cultural professionals are utilizing the opportunities afforded by digital technologies for cultural preservation and promotion, as well as the challenges they face in carrying out digitization projects.

This paper reports on a case study research focusing on digital fluency as a new competence for teaching foreign languages through technology. The data were generated on a training course having as its main purpose the investigation of pre-service and in-service teachers' perceptions about the relevance of digital fluency and the pedagogical use of digital technologies for foreign language (FL) teaching and learning. The trainee teachers were asked to work in groups with the purpose of exploring Windows Movie Maker software in order to create a movie addressing the importance of digital fluency and the potential of this digital tool in FL teaching and learning. The results suggest that digital fluency was considered a necessary competence for the creation of more attractive and dynamic lessons that motivate meaningful FL production.

The article focuses on a study of knowledge creation and organizing in a local history wiki. The background for this study was to understand how web 2.0 and social media might open new possibilities for museums to collaborate with communities and lay professionals in cultural heritage knowledge creation. Digital technologies provide tools that in many ways overcome challenges of physical collaboration between museums and amateurs. But technologies also bring in new aspects of ordering, categorizing and systematizing knowledge that illuminates the different institutional as well as professional frameworks that writing local historical knowledge into digital forms in fact represents.
