Methane Emission from Palsa Mires in Northeastern European Russia

Measurement data on methane fluxes in the palsa mire ecosystem at the border of tundra and taiga zones in northeastern European Russia are presented. It was found for the first time that an intense methane flux from the surface of the permafrost mound (palsa) is determined by the spring thawing of the seasonally thawed horizon in the layer of 14–25 cm. During this period, the emission was 4–20 times higher than the summer values. In lichen communities of peat mounds, the CH4 sink prevailed during the summer-autumn period. The total methane flux in different parts of the mire in June–September varied from 0.18 to 16.5 kg CH4/ha. In general, the palsa mire emitted 81 kg CH4/ha per year to the atmosphere. The methane emission from the surface of peat mounds and hollows made up 20% and 80% of the annual flux, respectively.

Methane fluxes were measured from ditches on peatlands drained for different purposes in two testing areas in European part of Russia. We used static chamber method and gas chromatography for CH 4 analysis. In Moscow Oblast CH 4 emissions were measured from ditches on milled peat extraction area and on agricultural drainage area (used for haying) during 2005-2011. Ditch spacing for both sites is 40 m, width on water level – 1.5-2 m. Averaged (median) methane flux for summer period was 28.5 and 12.5 mgС-CH 4∙m –2∙h –1, respectively, at these sites. Averaged (median) methane flux for summer period was 28.5 and 12.5 mgС-CH 4∙m –2∙h –1 for these sites consequently. In 2009-2011 methane fluxes were also measured from the ditch on forest drainage area, upstream and downstream the dam built for mire restoration. Simple average CH 4 emission rate was much higher at tail-bay point with flowing water as compared with back point upstream the dam with stagnant water – 14.4 and 2.4 mgС-CH 4∙m –2∙h –1, consequently. We assume water flow rate supports water degassing and increase of CH 4 emission from ditches. In Tver Oblast methane flux was measured in 2010 from ditches on forested bog and on forested fen, both drained for forestry with ditch spacing approx. 100 m, and ditch width on water level – 1-1.5 m. Flux observed at first nutrient-poor site was much lower – 0.31 mgС-CH 4∙m –2∙h –1, as compared with nutrient-rich one – 3.88 mgС-CH 4∙m –2∙h –1. Using methane emission rates from ditches and fractional area of ditches we calculate emission factors from drained peatlands. The results showed rather high values which need to be considered while assessing GHG emissions from drained peatlands.

For the first time subannual variability of methane fluxes on the water-atmosphere border in the water area of the Sea of Okhotsk, located eastward to Sakhalin Island, is shown. Variability of methane fluxes is determined by the presence and activity of submarine methane sources and is connected to the seasonal changes in hydrological and hydrochemical parameters of the sea water and the structure of of currents in the region under study. In spring and autumn the average fluxes are higher, than in the summer period. Within the summer modification of water and increase of stratification, the methane flux from the sea surface is reduced. In autumn, as a result of the autumnal convection of water and high average wind speed, methane, accumulated in transitional waters, is emitted into the atmosphere.

Euastrum lacustre is reported for Russia for the first time. This alcaliphilic species was found in the periphyton and plankton of three lakes in the Kursk Region (European Russia). A description of morphology, including the relief of cell wall, and habitats where this taxon is found are represented. LM and SEM microphotographs are provided. Morphological differences of E. lacustre from similar species are discussed. New species for region, namely Closterium aciculare, Cosmarium formosulum, C. granatum, C. pseudoinsigne, C. reniforme and Staurastrum pingue, are found in the samples together with E. lacustre.

The corticioid basidiomycete Jaapia ochroleuca (Bres.) Nannf. et J. Erikss. is recorded for the first time in the European Russia from the «Bryansky Les» Nature Reserve (Bryansk Region). The taxonomic position of the species is defined briefly. Its morphological description and data on distribution and ecology are provided. The details of microscopic structure of the collected specimen are illustrated.

Twenty seven species of the true bugs from the families Anthocoridae, Reduviidae, Miridae (Cimicomorpha), Coreidae, Thyreocoridae, Acanthosomatidae, and Pentatomidae (Pentatomomorpha) are recorded from the Northeast of European Russia for the first time. The family Thyreocoridae is for the first time reported from the region.

Bryophytes are the second largest group of land plants and are also known as the amphibians of the plant kingdom. 67 species of bryophytes have been reported from select locations across the state of Gujrat. The status of family fissidentaceae which is a large moss family is being presented in this paper. Globally the family consists of 10 genera but only one genus, Fissidens Hedw. has been collected from Gujarat. Fissidens is characterized by a unique leaf structure and shows the presence of three distinct lamina, the dorsal, the ventral and the vaginant lamina. A total of 8 species of Fissidens have been reported from the state based on vegetative characters as no sporophyte stages were collected earlier. Species reported from the neighboring states also showed the absence of sporophytes. The identification of different species was difficult due to substantial overlap in vegetative characters. Hence a detailed study on the diversity of members of Fissidentaceae in Gujarat was carried out between November 2013 and February 2015. In present study 8 distinct species of Fissidens have been collected from different parts of the state. Three species Fissidens splachnobryoides Broth., Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens curvato-involutus Dixon. have been identified while the other five are still to be identified. Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens xiphoides M. Fleisch., which have been reported as distinct species are actually synonyms according to TROPICOS database. The presence of sexual reproductive structures and sporophytes for several Fissidens species are also being reported for the first time from the state.

The caste system in India got transformed as a consequence of the policies of the British Raj. The introduction of the census under the colonial government, among other things, made the most direct impact because for the first time the castes have been enumerated with great details. As a result, castes immediately not only organized themselves but also formed caste associations in order to get their status recorded in the way they thought was honourable to them. Caste associations emerged over the period to pressurize the colonial administration to improve their rank in the census. This process was especially prevalent among the lower castes in different parts of India. Shilpakar Mahashaba was a case in point in Uttarakhand. Shilpakar Mahasabha claimed new advantages from the state like reservations (quotas) in educational institutions and in the civil service. Subsequently, they also became mutual aid structures. Shilpakar Mahasabha founded schools and hostels for the children of Shilpakars and led a sort of co-operative movement. Some have argued that caste associations acted like a collective enterprise with economic, social and political objectives for their caste.

The history of the inhabitants of the house at 5 Krupnicza Street in Krakow inspired to write this book, the aim of which is to present the history of two families who came to Krakow from different parts of Poland. The „Pod Matką Boską” tenement house, which has become a life haven for so many generations of Reiss and Chłopicki, including medical professors associated with the Jagiellonian University, is the basis of a much wider story about the intertwining of human lives. Thanks to these circumstances, we restore memory, and we often realise for the first time how far fates of families intertwine and connect with each other. Reaching deeply into the family roots, we not only find numerous family ties, but also appreciate their importance. We also understand better how history influences the course of life and how individual decisions can influence the course of events. The pages of this book will include wellknown and distinguished figures, who have their place in the history of politics and science, as well as doctors, military leaders, politicians. There will be also room for those who cared about family and public matters without publicity, serving current and everyday matters, but without whom great things could not have been fulfiled.

Fourteen species of lichens, fifteen lichenicolous fungi and one saprobic fungus are reported for the first time for St. Petersburg, Western or Eastern Leningrad Region. The lichen Lecidella meiococca and the lichenicolous fungus Tremella phaeophysciae are reported as new to Russia, the lichen Lecania sambucina and the lichenicolous fungus Endococcus tricolorans are new for the European Russia, the lichens Buellia arborea, Chaenotheca cinerea, Bellemerea sanguinea, resinicolous calicioid fungus Chaenothecopsis mediarossica and lichenicolous fungi Arthonia molendoi, Lichenochora obscuroides, Pronectria leptaleae, Sphaerellothecium cladoniae are new for the North-Western European Russia. The most interesting records are briefly discussed.

For the first time in world practice, predictive models were constructed for X, Y, Z geomagnetic elements. Based on these models, the prediction was made with 3 hours lead time using data of the “Lviv” magnetic observatory. The properties of models are as follows: observatory — LVV, рredicted values — XYZ; lead time — 3 hours; correlation coefficients’ averaged measurement data — 0.824 (X), 0.811 (Y), 0.804 (Z); prediction efficiency — 0.816 (X), 0.803 (Y), 0.801 (Z); skill score — 0.115 (X), 0.095 (Y), 0.099 (Z). The developed models were tested in the Main Center of Special Monitoring, and they were found to meet the Basic Requirements for operational predictive models.
