This study aims to investigate the impact of microfinance on poverty reduction through women entrepreneurship in Southern Punjab, Pakistan. We also examine if social capital plays any role in microfinance and women entrepreneurship growth that leads towards poverty reduction. This study uses the data collected through a survey of 210 women entrepreneurs, who secured microfinance loans for their new/established enterprises. By applying correlation and regression analysis techniques, this study finds that access to finance is important for female entrepreneurs and it helps them in realizing their potential as entrepreneurs. A range of entrepreneurial characteristics was found to be critical to the success of women led enterprises in general and to poverty reduction among their families, in particular. Our results reveal that microfinance plays a positive role in women's entrepreneurial performance. We also find that Islamic microfinance contributes more to sustainable women's entrepreneurial performance than non-Islamic microfinance. Although this study used a limited sample of Pakistani female entrepreneurs, yet the results can be relevant to women entrepreneurs in other developing countries with contextual cautions. Future researchers may incorporate more relevant variables and increase the sample size to enhance the understanding of our investigated phenomena.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of microfinance loans on poverty reduction amongst women entrepreneurs in Pakistan. The authors set out to establish whether there exists an optimal loan size to attain the objectives of women entrepreneurs and poverty reduction in this country. Design/methodology/approach – This exploratory study is based upon an empirical investigation of 123 semi structured interviews as well as in-depth, semi structured interviews with a sub sample of ten women entrepreneurs who secured microfinance loans for their new or established enterprises. Findings – Emergent results show that access to finance is important for female entrepreneurs and helps them realise their potential as entrepreneurs. An optimal, poverty reduction, microfinance size has been identified. A range of entrepreneurial characteristics were found to be critical to the success of women led enterprises in general and to poverty reduction amongst their families in particular. Research limitations/implications – This research focuses upon a relatively small sample of female entrepreneurs operating in the Pakistani economy. Although the results could be relevant to women entrepreneurs in other developing countries, caution should be exercised when attempting to generalise these finding to other contexts. Originality/value – Emergent results make a contribution to research on women entrepreneurship in general and optimal microfinance loan size in particular.

Purpose: In the contemporary era, women are playing a vital role in changing the global economy as entrepreneurs, workers, and consumers, yet they encounter many problems and obstacles in the development of entrepreneurship. This study aim is to investigate the impact of Islamic microfinance on women entrepreneurship performance: mediating role of social capital and moderating role of opportunity for social interaction in South Punjab, Pakistan. Design/Methodology/Approach:  Data were collected from 183 women entrepreneurs, who were using Islamic microfinance, through the convenience sampling technique. Convenient sampling technique was used to collect the information. PLS-SEM was employed to statistically test the data. Findings: This study results indicate that microfinance had a negative relationship with women's entrepreneurship performance. However, when Islamic microfinance led to the formation of social capital among women that eventually caused the women entrepreneurship performance. Moreover, the extent to which microfinance provisions affected the social capital of clients was dependent upon the microfinance providers facilitated social interaction among clients. . Implications/Originality/Value: This paper will give benefit to academics in preparing a plan for future research. Moreover, findings will also assist policymakers and IMFIs to set out microfinance initiatives that will improve the betterment of clients and will maximize their enterprising results.

The present study sheds light upon critical factors that help explain the entrepreneurial success among Muslim women living in a democratic Tunisia, a Muslim-majority country considered by many to be the lone Arab Spring success story. We hypothesized that successful entrepreneurs need social capital, including the capital that comes from marriage and high levels of wasta (the Arabic concept of having personal connections with influential others). Moreover, given the lack of empirical attention paid to the role of the culture, language, and customs associated with Islam on women’s empowerment, we examine whether religiosity is related to entrepreneurial performance among Tunisian women. Data collected with 84 female entrepreneurs participating in entrepreneurship training programs across Tunisia reveal that two forms of social capital, marital status and wasta, are related to training center directors’ ratings of women entrepreneurs’ performance, suggesting that social capital is a critical asset for Muslim women entrepreneurs. Religiosity, on the other hand, had no statistically significant relationship with entrepreneurial performance. Our study contributes to research on entrepreneurship by identifying wasta as a form of social capital that may be necessary for women entrepreneurs to succeed in the Middle East and North Africa and by taking an initial step towards better understanding the empirical (and controversial) relationship between religiosity and career success among Muslim women. We recommend that training organizations supporting entrepreneurs directly assist women in the development of social capital and acknowledge, rather than ignore, that nepotism and wasta are linked to entrepreneurial success in some cultures.

Abstract In career development, a variety of personal, organizational and labor market variables challenge employees and organizations, in particular those in dynamic working environments, such as higher education (HE) institutions. This study examines the association between work history, organizational social capital (OSC) and perceived organizational prestige (POP) as antecedent variables, and perceived employability (PE) and career satisfaction (CS) as outcome variables, as well as the mediating role of organizational identification (OI) in these relations. A sample of 283 workers in Chilean HE institutions filled out an on-line questionnaire, and hypotheses were tested using a mediation model. Results indicated a significant mediation effect of OI, abt = 0.363, 95% CI [0.181, 0.576] abt/c = 31.98%, to explain the relationship between internal perceived employability (IPE) and its predictor variables POP, abpo = 0.102, 95% CI [0.056, 0.160], abpo/c = 9.01%, and OSC, abcsoc = 0.101, 95% CI [0.053, 0.183, abcsoc/c = 8.89%. Promoting a positive image of the organization and its social capital, strengthened by OI, emerge as strategies for HR management oriented toward workers’ career development, with consequent implications for commitment, intention to leave and ultimately for organizational results. The study provides a deeper understanding of the complexity of careers and explains the importance of identification with the organization when the impact of organizational attributes on one’s career is analyzed.

Since the past two decades the concept of women entrepreneurship has gained recognition as a significant contributor towards the economic growth of the country. This can be attributed to the many encouraging factors like family support, flexibility in work family schedule, encouraging policies etc. Nevertheless, there also exist certain barriers that hinder their path of progress. In the context of globalization today, women entrepreneurs across nations are also engaged in identifying opportunities for further growth. In this pursuit they face a number of challenges amidst the opportunities. The chapter intends to make a contribution to the topic of women entrepreneurship by examining what initiates entrepreneurship among individuals, comparison between male and female entrepreneurs, factors that encourage women entrepreneurs as well as those that inhibit their growth and on ways to overcome the challenges they face.

The Nigerian film industry (Nollywood) has predominantly been presented as a masculine world. This is not unconnected to the fact that most of the players and central figures in the history and growth of the industry are masculine. However, female entrepreneurship has marked the industry right from the early stages of its existence. Like their male counterparts, female entrepreneurs have, through exceptional entrepreneurial techniques, provided actionable solutions to some of the production and distribution crises which the industry has witnessed. Using empirical understandings, this chapter critically explores female entrepreneurship in the sector. It provides a micro-level perspective of socio-economic challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in the Nollywood film industry and their future prospects. The chapter begins by exploring entrepreneurship in Nigeria's economy before delving into the prospects and challenges of women entrepreneurship in the Nollywood industry.

This paper examines the views and attitudes of a sample of 228 female entrepreneurs in Belgium towards the virtual social network Facebook. It uses statistical analysis to evaluate the impact of their gendered sector of activity and of their self-perceptions on: how Facebook is perceived as responding to gender-related difficulties; how Facebook is used in terms of objectives and activities; how Facebook supports women's networks; and the outcomes of Facebook for women-owned businesses. The results highlight significant differences according to women's sectors of activity and self-perceptions with regard to how Facebook is perceived and used. They support the idea of an active posture of women entrepreneurs, allowing for action to be taken to deconstruct and counterbalance existing gender dynamics. The paper highlights certain implications for public and private initiatives and underlines the potential of this and other virtual social networking sites for women's entrepreneurship.

Purpose Women entrepreneurship has been growing and contributing significantly to economic activities, and it may also reduce unemployment, especially in developing countries. Many women entrepreneurs have begun to experience problems, including within their socio-cultural environment, in the beginning of or when they run their businesses. Among those developing countries, Indonesia has been recognized as having diverse ethnic groups, traditions, religions and languages. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how the socio-cultural environment affects women entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This study aims at exploring the impact of the socio-cultural environment on entrepreneurial behavior, including the involvement of women in entrepreneurial activities in Indonesia as a multicultural country. A theoretical framework is empirically tested to identify the impact of the socio-culture environment on behavior and on women entrepreneurial activity through an integrated analysis. Findings A quantitative method with a causal descriptive approach is used in this study. The data are analyzed by using a descriptive statistics with the structural equation modeling technique. This study is intended to focus on women entrepreneurs in micro, small and medium enterprises in Bandung, Indonesia. A total of 210 women entrepreneurs have participated in this study. Practical implications include useful information for women entrepreneurs to overcome the impact of the socio-cultural environment in their entrepreneurial activities, and suggest insights for future research. Originality/value The development of women entrepreneurship in emerging economies may continuously face challenges, particularly in countries with multicultural attributes.

<p>The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between human resource management (HRM) practices and organizational performance on the basis of 247 valid and reliable questionnaires distributed to managers at different management levels working in Jordanian manufacturing firms. The study also aimed to explore the mediating role of knowledge management as well as the moderating effect of organizational culture on the relationship between HRM practices and organizational performance. Ten HRM practices and 10 indicators of organizational performance were adopted for the purpose of this study. Knowledge management was measured by examining three processes; knowledge creation, sharing and utilization. Organizational culture was measured according to passive/defensive, aggressive/defensive and constructive cultures. The results of the study supported the presumed hypotheses. Hence, HRM practices significantly predicted organizational performance. Knowledge management mediated the relationship between HRM practices and organizational performance. Finally, it was found that organizational culture moderated the relationship between HRM practices and organizational performance as well as the relationship between HRM practices and knowledge management. Constructive cultures play a positive role in the relationship between HRM practices and organizational performance (OP), while defensive cultures negatively affect the relationship between HRM practices and knowledge management (KM). The main contribution of this study to the literature on HRM, KM and OP derives from the lack of prior studies addressing the same purposes as this study. The study informs researchers and managers that both knowledge management and organizational culture mediate and moderate the impact of HRM practices on organizational performance to a considerable extent.</p>
