Abstract The article tackles the issue of students’ professional identity in relation with their motivation towards learning foreign languages (with the focus on English). Modern European education is based on the principle of integrity of the interests of all stakeholders, and future specialists must be ready to meet the challenges of the growing global market. Yet only a small number of Ukrainian school graduates and students of economic universities can communicate fluently in foreign social and communicative spheres. An attempt to find out what hinders the process of foreign language acquisition at non-linguistic universities and what really influences their motivation has been made. The research shows that an important factor in students’ motivation towards learning foreign languages is their professional self-identity, which is developed during university study and is in its turn determined by the contents, the form of professional education and the goals set. The analysis of the pedagogical literature has enabled us to formulate the definition of the “professional identity of economics students” content. Thus, it denotes person’s professional competencies that help him/her understand his/her role and place in the professional domain, at the job market and in the society on the whole, and also implies motivation, confidence and responsibility as well as readiness to work effectively. Once the student has identified his/her future professional roles, challenges, options and responsibilities he/she is motivated to develop the skills necessary to perform their professional duties and succeed in the career. Economic university training with the global context in mind is a motivating factor of improving foreign language competency of students and a definite factor of economic education prestige.

© 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited. Purpose: Collaborative consumption experiences in tourism have been examined widely, yet predominantly focused on guest perspectives. Using the sharing economy platform Couchsurfing, this study aims to use value co-creation to explore hosting experiences in non-monetary accommodation sharing in a developing country, including hosts’ motivations to participate, the range of social practices during hosting and the value outcomes achieved through hosting. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a social constructivist paradigm, 20 in-depth interviews and 1 focus group were conducted with experienced Couchsurfing hosts in Indonesia. Findings: Findings highlight the exclusively intrinsic nature of hosts’ motivations and their subsequent impact on co-creational practices and value outcomes. Social practices revolve around the establishment and acquisition of social and cultural capital and providing guests with authentic local and cultural tourist experiences. Hosts reported value outcomes relating to friendship, knowledge, an improved sense of self and employment opportunities. Research limitations/implications: The results of this research may not be transferable to Western accommodation sharing settings or more rural and less touristically developed regions within developing countries. Social implications: It is argued that hosting can contribute positively to host communities in developing countries by facilitating intercultural communication and knowledge transfer while enhancing cultural self-identity and professional advancement. Originality/value: The majority of existing research on accommodation sharing has examined guest perspectives while being placed within predominantly Western contexts. This paper adds new knowledge by exploring the host perspective and examining the impacts of the sharing economy in a developing country.

Purpose of the study: The article aims to identify the determinants of intercultural education and describe their essence. Methodology: The authors used the cluster of methods: the diagnostics of cultural identity and a foreign cultural-reflexive position in communication with representatives of other cultures, the analysis of activity-related products, rapid assessment questionnaire "Tolerance index", questionnaire. The study comprised 135 students of the South Ural State Humanitarian-Pedagogical University (Chelyabinsk, Russia). Main Findings: The authors have determined typical features and target-oriented aspects of intercultural education and presented them in the form of a matrix. The authors have also developed and tested the course "Basics of intercultural communication", considered the formation of the cultural self-identity and foreign culture-reflexive position of students, as well as their tolerance index and types of ethnic identity. Applications of this study: The study results can be used in teaching courses concerned with problems of intercultural communication to students of foreign language faculties, international faculties, and other humanities faculties. The research materials are of scientific significance for undergraduate and graduate students working on their dissertations. Novelty/Originality of this study: The study novelty is as follows.: At the theoretical level, it determines the typical features and determinants of intercultural education. At the practical level, it introduces and tests the course "Fundamentals of intercultural communication". It analyzes the formation of the cultural self-identity and foreign cultural-reflexive position of students, as well as their tolerance index and types of ethnic identity.

The article looks into the meaning of concepts of L2 Self, L2 Ideal self and L2 Motivational Self Systems from the point of view of their usefulness for SLA/FLT research. Psychological and sociological terminology related to the Self, Identity, Storied Self, Social Identity and Ethnicity is then discussed as well as various types of the Self useful in the analysis of attitudes to first, second and foreign languages. Examples of linguistic decisions are offered that lead to language maintenance, language loss or changes of the dominant language. Linguistic behaviour is traced back to possible ways of presenting the Self as well as to different approaches to ethnicity, integration and assimilation. Conclusions and implications for classroom language learning and teacher education are also presented.

Indonesia is well-known for its diversity of ethnicity, language, religion and tradition. This gives birth to the emergence of local wisdom in every region in this country. Local wisdom is certainly very meaningful because it is a part of characteristic of the nation. Unfortunately, many today’s young people are not familiar, even do not know, with their local wisdoms. This should be paid more attention since local wisdom is one of the self-identity of the nation. One of strategies to preserve and inherit local wisdom is by integrating it into all lessons, including foreign language, taught at school. Local wisdom needs to be in instructional activities of foreign language teaching, even though they need to learn foreign languages, they would not lose their real identity. The application of this concept is not only to equip the students with linguistic competence but also to provide them with cultural competence. This paper discusses the importance, the reason and the practical ways of integrating local wisdom in foreign language teaching for Indonesian students. It is concluded that the integration of local wisdom is very essential and it could be executed by including the local wisdom values into the materials, allocated time for discussion on local wisdom, classroom activities and the process of teaching linguistic skill.

Introduction. The paper considers the problem of cultural identity influenced by the study of ancestry. The scientific novelty of this paper is due to the attention to the psychological aspects of self-identity under the influence of the study of person, her or his ancestry, and, above all, in a situation of detection of undesirable information about his or her family's past. It is hypothesized that motifs associated with the need to rethink its social role in terms of responsibility for the acts of their ancestors, do not play a significant role in the study of family history.Methodology and sources. The paper analyzes the results of the pilot Internet study conducted to determine the motives and methods of the study of person's ancestry, as well as the stability of interest in this activity. The target audience of this study were all who are interested in learning their ancestors, regardless of age or occupational category. The questionnaire used was semi-closed. A total of 154 people were interviewed.Results and discussion. The results showed that 46.8 % of respondents interest in their ancestry has a playful nature; 37.0 % desire through your family history to better understand the history of their country; 33.0 % of respondents are interested in their ancestry in order to better understand the reasons for their behavior (which is a necessary component of self identification); 32.0 % would like to find ancestors, who could be proud of. Nevertheless, in the case of unsolicited information about the life of their ancestors, are ready to make conclusions about his or her own life less than four percent of the respondents.Conclusion. The author believes that the paper put forward the hypothesis that motifs associated with the need to rethink its social role in terms of responsibility for the acts of their ancestors, do not play a significant role in the study of family history is confirmed by the results of the study. In case of detection of unwanted results, mainly protective mechanisms are becoming actual, ensuring the preservation of psychological comfort.
