Academics and their online networks: Exploring the role of academic social networking sites

The rapid rise in popularity of online social networking has been followed by a slew of services aimed at an academic audience. This project sought to explore network structure in these sites, and to explore trends in network structure by surveying participants about their use of sites and motivations for making connections. Social network analysis revealed that discipline was influential in defining community structure, while academic seniority was linked to the position of nodes within the network. The survey revealed a contradiction between academics use of the sites and their position within the networks the sites foster. Junior academics were found to be more active users of the sites, agreeing to a greater extent with the perceived benefits, yet having fewer connections and occupying a more peripheral position in the network.

Academics are increasingly encouraged to use social media in their professional lives. Social networking sites are one type of tool within this; the ability to connect with others through this medium may offer benefits in terms of reaching novel audiences, enhancing research impact, discovering collaborators, and drawing on a wider network of expertise and knowledge. However, little research has focused on the role of these sites in practice, and their relationship to academics’ formal roles and institutions. This paper presents an analysis of 18 interviews carried out with academics in order to discuss their online networks (at either Academia.edu or ResearchGate, and Twitter) and to understand the relationship between their online networks and formal academic identity. Several strategies underpinning academics’ use of the sites were identified, including: circumventing institutional constraints, extending academic space, finding a niche, promotion and impact, and academic freedom. These themes also provide a bridge between academic identity development online and institutional roles, with different priorities for engaging with online networks being associated with different career stages.

Exchange has been known as the subject matter of Marketing. In this decade, Internet has enabled people to connect and exchange information to others, regardless of time and space. This condition leads to a new phenomenon, known as social networking through social network sites. In social network sites members find new kinds of exchange, which is information exchange. Memberships in many social network sites are free, which means that everyone is free to join or leave it. In that case social network providers must ensure that members keep using their site. The aim of this study is to test and analyze the direct and indirect effect of exchange to loyalty. The Unit of analysis in this study were members of social networking sites Friendster and Facebook. There are 256 respondents participate in this research. The result shows if community members keep exchange activity, they will loyal to the community. Direct effect has greater impact on loyalty than indirect effect. This means that social network company must encourage their member to exchange information actively.

Social Network Analysis is attracting growing attention as social networking sites and their enabled applications transform and impact society. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of social network analysis state of the art research and practice. In the paper the authors’ first examine social networking and the core concepts and ingredients of social network analysis. Secondly, they review the trend of social networking and related research. The authors’ then consider modelling motivations, discussing models in line with tie formation approaches, where connections between nodes are taken into account. The authors’ outline data collection approaches along with the common structural properties observed in related literature. They then discuss future directions and the emerging approaches in social network analysis research, notably semantic social networks and social interaction analysis.

The role of Social Networking Sites in ongoing communication becomes easier, especially to build stakeholder management and stakeholder engagement, provide information, and monitor information to manage the image and reputation of the company. This literature review aims to explore the role of Social Networking Sites in increasing stakeholder engagement. This research method is a literature review that uses journal reference sources sorted by the role of Social Network Sites in increasing Stakeholder Engagement. The results show that Social Network Sites on the platforms Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube are tools to increase engagement with internal and external stakeholders to create relationships and improve the company's image and reputation. Social Network Sites play a role in building connections, relational relationships between customers, assessing the matrix for stakeholders, assessing company performance, assessing stakeholder participation, assessing marketing strategies, building relationship relationships, and forming customer loyalty. Online activities carried out by stakeholders are related to the image of the company's reputation, so that digital public relations and corporate communications must adequately manage it.

With the increased amount of data generated by social networking sites there is also increased difficulty in the analysis of this data, including time-based changes, which can provide unique insights in social network analysis. Information visualization is a vital tool in assisting social scientists with analysis of large quantities of data; however, the gathering, formatting, and visualizing of time-related data from social networking sites still remains an obstacle. This research explores the process of gathering time-based data in real time and using dynamic visualization techniques to visualize and analyze time-based changes in data generated by discussions on the social networking site Reddit. Social media sites have recently gain an essential importance in the contemporary societies، actually، these sites isn't simply a personal or social tool of communication among people، its role had been expanded to become "political"، words such as "Facebook، Twitter and YouTube" are common words in political fields of our modern days since the uprisings of Arab spring، which sometimes called (Facebook revolutions) as a result of the major impact of these sites in broadcasting process of the revolution message over the world by organize and manage the revolution progresses in spite of the governmental ascendance and official prohibition.
