Purpose This paper aims to identify the factors that motivate parents to adopt internet monitoring software (aka parental control software [PCS]) to curb problematic internet usage and safeguard their children online. By doing so, the authors are able to curb problematic internet usage and keep children safe online. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was conducted using a representative sample of 330 parents in the USA with children ages 10 to 15. Results were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings This research combines two theories, namely, technology acceptance model (TAM) and protection motivation theory (PMT) to factors that motivate parents to adopt internet monitoring software to help their children. Perceived severity, perceived vulnerability from PMT and personal innovativeness (PI) from TAM, which is related to self-efficacy and the belief that future technologies will require less effort to adopt, are key factors that influence parents’ perceived usefulness of PCS. Perceived usefulness and PI both positively predict parents’ purchase intention for internet monitoring software. Practical implications The study establishes that there are personal, technology and situational factors that motivate the adoption of PCS. These determinants have implications for how marketers identify potential users and how they might improve the promotion of internet monitoring technologies. Originality/value The paper extends the application of the technology acceptance model and PMT to predict technology adoption aimed at helping others. Findings show that personal and perceptual factors motivate parents’ adoption of internet monitoring software to curb problematic internet usage and keep children safe online. This paper is the first to combine the technology acceptance model and PMT to explain the adoption of software solutions to protect others online. By doing so, a more thorough account of parents’ technology adoption to protect their children is offered.

There is a scholarly divide on the propriety of the notion of digital nativity and digital immigration. In contrast, one side of the range postulates that digital nativity and digital migration influence adoption of digital technologies, the other side contends that the concept is instead an unsubstantiated over-generalization. This study interrogates the role of digital nativity and digital immigration play in Internet usage by students and lecturers of tertiary institutions of learning in Delta State, Nigeria. We adopted the Technology Acceptance Model, which explains factors that motivate people to accept and use a particular technology. We used a questionnaire to gather data from 1,200 respondents and analyze the data using descriptive and inferential statistics. We found the students and lecturers had sufficient Internet access, and there is no significant differential in their access to the Internet. However, there is a substantial difference in their frequency of using the Internet as the students tended to use the Internet more frequently than the lecturers do. Also, there are significant differences in the pattern of students' and lecturers' Internet usage. We recommend that lecturers and students should increase their accessibility to the Internet, and lecturers should increase their frequency of Internet usage.   Received: 8 November 2020 / Accepted: 12 December 2020 / Published: 17 January 2021

The m-Governance framework of auniversity aims to utilize the massive reach of mobile phones and harness the potential of mobile applications to enable easy and round the-clock access to the services of its affiliated institutions.  In the current mobile age there is need for transforming e-governance services to m-Governance as m-Governance is not a replacement for e-Governance rather it complements e-Governance. With this unparalleled advancement of mobile communication technologies, universities are turning to m-governance to realize the value of mobile technologies for responsive governance and measurable improvements to academic, social and economic development, public service delivery, operational efficiencies and active stakeholder engagement. In this context the present study, aims to develop and validate a m-governance framework of a university by extending Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with its prime stakeholders so called the Heads of the affiliated institutions. A survey instrument was developed based on the framework and it was administered with 20 Heads of the affiliated Institutions. The results also showed that the Heads of the affiliated Institutions expressed their favorableness towards m-governance adoption.
