The N→∞ limit of the edges of finite planar electron densities is discussed for higher Landau levels. For full filling, the particle number is correlated with the magnetic flux, and hence with the boundary location, making the N→∞ limit more subtle at the edges than in the bulk. In the nth Landau level, the density exhibits n distinct steps at the edge, in both circular and rectangular samples. The boundary characteristics for individual Landau levels, and for successively filled Landau levels, are computed in an asymptotic expansion.

An analysis for hydrodynamic, non-Newtonian lubrication of misaligned journal bearings is given. The hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity for partial arc journal bearings lubricated by power-law, non-Newtonian fluids is calculated for small valves of the bearing aspect ratios. These results are compared with: numerical solutions to the non-Newtonian modified Reynolds equation, with Ocvirk’s experimental results for misaligned bearings, and with other numerical simulations. The cavitation (i.e., film rupture) boundary location is calculated using the Reynolds’ free-surface, boundary condition.

Developmental enhancers integrate graded concentrations of transcription factors (TFs) to create sharp gene expression boundaries. Here we examine the hunchback P2 (HbP2) enhancer which drives a sharp expression pattern in the Drosophila blastoderm embryo in response to the transcriptional activator Bicoid (Bcd). We systematically interrogate cis and trans factors that influence the shape and position of expression driven by HbP2, and find that the prevailing model, based on pairwise cooperative binding of Bcd to HbP2 is not adequate. We demonstrate that other proteins, such as pioneer factors, Mediator and histone modifiers influence the shape and position of the HbP2 expression pattern. Comparing our results to theory reveals how higher-order cooperativity and energy expenditure impact boundary location and sharpness. Our results emphasize that the bacterial view of transcription regulation, where pairwise interactions between regulatory proteins dominate, must be reexamined in animals, where multiple molecular mechanisms collaborate to shape the gene regulatory function.

ABSTRACTIn order to obtain a large silicon (Si) grain and to control the location of its boundary in a Si film melting-crystallized by a pulse laser, we have proposed to use periodic thermal distribution spontaneously induced by irradiation of a linearly polarized laser beam. We estimated the suitable amorphous Si (a-Si) thickness taking account of multiple reflection theoretically and confirmed it experimentally. Also, we proposed a novel technique to reduce the irradiation pulse number to control the grain boundary location stably in the crystallized Si film, in which the elastic wave was generated on the surface of a-Si film prior to melting-crystallization by using an ultra sonic oscillator. Owing to this technique, we can control the grain boundary location periodically with only 1 pulse irradiation in the crystallized Si film.
