Objective: We aimed to investigate how EEG frequency bands change in females in response to acute exercise compared to males.Methods: Consenting healthy adult females (n=15) & males (n=15) bicycled an ergometer at 50% HRmax for 20 min. EEG was recorded using 10-20 system from mid-frontal (F4 & F3), central (C4 & C3), parietal (P4 & P3), temporal (T4 & T3) & occipital (O2 & O1) regions. Exercise-induced EEG changes were compared between two sexes by Mann Whitney test. EEG power (μV2) is presented as median & interquartile range.Results: In females, as compared to males, resting right side delta, alpha, and beta activities were more in almost all recorded sites [delta: F4= 49.82 (44.23-63.56) vs. 35.5 (32.70-44.44), p < 0.001; etc], [alpha F4: 127.62 (112.89-149.03) vs. 49.36 (46.37-52.98), p < 0.001; etc], [beta F4= 18.96 (15.83-25.38)  vs. 14.77 (10.34-17.55), p < 0.05; C4= 21.16 (18.4-25.9) vs. 15.48 (9.66-19.40), p < 0.01; etc]. Similarly, females resting right theta activity was more in parietal [P4= 33.04 (25.1-42.41) vs. 22.3 (18.36-34.33), p < 0.05] & occipital [O2= 50.81 (30.64-66.8) vs. 26.85 (22.18-34.42), p < 0.001] regions than in males. They had similar picture on the left side also. The delta values of right alpha power was less in female in frontal [F4= -11.61 (-45.24 -3.64) vs. 9.48 (1.05-16.58), p < 0.01] and central [C4= -72 (-32.98-9.48) vs. 22.69 (13.03-33.05), p < 0.01] regions compared to males. Also, they had less delta values of left central alpha [C3= -8.32 (-32.65-6.1) vs. 16.5 (0.36-36.36), p < 0.01] and temporal beta [T3= -6.29 (-10.09- -1.49) vs. 1.24 (-0.84- 2.8), p < 0.001] power compared to males.Conclusion: At rest females may have high EEG powers in different bands. Background. Depression is one the most common mental disorders that can be seen all over the world. In traditional Persian medicine, some medicinal herbs are recommended for depression treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Cuscuta planiflora Ten. and Nepeta menthoides Boiss. & Buhse in patients with major depression. Methodology. This study is a randomized triple-blind controlled clinical trial conducted in the year 2010 in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences on patients with major depression. Pharmaceutical capsules of Cuscuta planiflora (500 mg) and Nepeta menthoides (400 mg) were prepared by a pharmacist. Patients were randomly assigned to 3 groups: group A (treated with Nepeta menthoides capsules and conventional drugs), group B (treated with Cuscuta planiflora capsules and conventional drugs), and group C (treated only with conventional drugs). The study period was 8 weeks and depression was measured before and after the study by Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Depression Inventory. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 20 and the P < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results. A total of 43 subjects participated in this study, of whom 81.4% were females (n = 35) and 18.6% were males (n = 8). The mean ± standard deviation of age of the participants was 38 ± 10.9 years. The majority of patients (65.1%, n = 28) were married. There were 15 patients (34.9%) in group A, 13 (30.29%) in group B, and 15 (34.9%) in group C. There was a significant decrease in mean scores of Beck and Hamilton depression inventories in the 3 groups after treatment ( P < .01); moreover, there was more decrease in scores of the Beck and Hamilton depression inventories in groups A and B compared with group C after treatment ( P < .01). Conclusion. Despite the paucity of the population under study, the findings showed that Cuscuta planiflora and Nepeta menthoides capsules could be effective, affordable herbal medicines with improved cost–benefit in treatment of major depression and it is worth designing further and more extensive studies to get to a more accurate conclusion.

In contrast to peer-assisted learning (PAL) in clinical training, there is scant literature on the efficacy of PAL during basic medical sciences teaching for preclinical students. A group of senior medical students aimed to design and deliver clinically oriented small-group tutorials after every module in the preclinical curriculum at a United Kingdom medical school. Twenty tutorials were delivered by senior students throughout the year to first- and second-year students. A baseline questionnaire was delivered to inform the development of the program followed by an end-point questionnaire the next year ( n = 122). Quizzes were administered before and after five separate tutorials to assess changes in mean student scores. Additionally, each tutorial was evaluated via a questionnaire for participants ( n = 949). All five posttutorial quizzes showed a significant improvement in mean student score ( P < 0.05). Questionnaires showed students found the program to be relevant and useful for revision purposes and appreciated how tutorials contextualized basic science to clinical medicine. Students appreciated the interactive nature of the sessions and found receiving personalized feedback about their learning and consolidating information with someone familiar with the material to be useful. With the inclusion of the program, students felt there were now an adequate number of tutorials during the year. In conclusion, this study shows that senior medical students can design and deliver a program that adds value to the mostly lecture-based formal preclinical curriculum. We hope that our study can prompt further work to explore the effect of PAL on the teaching of basic sciences during preclinical studies.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a visual impairment-related eye disease developed by long-term hyperglycemic status. Diabetic condition in DR patients leads to diabetic organopathies (e.g., renal failure). Albuminuria, as a hallmark of renal failure, can be correlated with visual indicators in DR patients. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the role of albuminuria status in visual acuity (VA) and bevacizumab therapy outcomes in DR patients. Methods: In this retrospective study, 48 DR patients were admitted to the Ophthalmology Center of Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital, affiliated with Babol University of Medical Sciences, Babol, Iran. The retinopathy status and VA were identified before and after treatment through 45 days of bevacizumab therapy. In addition, fast blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, urine albumin, and urine creatinine were evaluated using standard laboratory methods. Results: The VA value before treatment in microalbuminuric DR patients (0.106 ± 0.036) was significantly lower than non-microalbuminuric DR patients (0.347 ± 0.286; P < 0.001). Furthermore, VA value after treatment in microalbuminuric DR patients (0.115 ± 0.071) was significantly lower than non-microalbuminuric DR patients (0.355 ± 0.272; P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the percentage of VA increase between microalbuminuric and non-microalbuminuric patients. Moreover, the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was correlated with a lower VA level before and after treatment (P < 0.001 for both). There was no correlation between the percentage of VA increase with ACR, albumin, and creatinine. Conclusions: The current study results showed that different VA before and after bevacizumab therapy status was correlated with microalbuminuria status. Additionally, microalbuminuria status did not affect the percentage of VA increase in the treatment of DR patients.

Anemia is a common medical disorder affecting a lot of women in pregnancy in the developing countries. Daily oral iron supplementation during pregnancy reduces the prevalence of anemia. In the present study we have compared the hematological responses to oral iron therapy using the formulation of iron poly maltose complex in anemic and normal pregnant women. The haemoglobin (Hb) level and other blood parameters were studied in anemic and non-anemic pregnant women both before and after oral iron therapy. Hemoglobin, iron indicators improved significantly with oral iron therapy and appear to have good compliance and efficacy. This helps us to assess the varied comparative responses in both the categories. The study will be indicative about the rational use of iron in iron deficiency anemia. Abstract Background: this study evaluated the effect of an educational intervention for increasing elementary school teachers’ ADHD knowledge, attitudes, and behavior.Method: Teachers from 12 schools who had at least one students with a definitive diagnosis of ADHD participated in the study and were allocated into either an intervention (n=31) or control group (n=27). Teachers’ ADHD knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior were assessed before and after intervention. Six-session participatory intervention were provided only for the intervention group.Results: Two mounts after the intervention, the intervention group scored significantly higher on all three outcomes (P≤0.001).Conclusion: The educational intervention significantly improved teachers’, knowledge, attitudes as well as their behaviors and strategies to manage children with ADHD. It is recommended that this program will incorporate into in-service training courses for primary school teachers as a means of facilitating teaching and managing children with ADHD in class. Trial registration: The study was approved by the by the Research Deputy of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. In addition, The Ethical Committee of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences approved the study proposal. (ID code: IR.MUI.RESEARCH.REC.1398.297). The required permission from Education Department of Isfahan City was attained. Participation in the study was voluntary. Before taking part in the study, selected teachers provided written consent also study goals were described to them.

Background: The role of intubation is practiced in most respectful universities for many medical students, especially the paramedic and anesthesia students through controlled anesthesia simulation labs. Aim: The study aims to evaluate the learning outcomes of various types of intubation for paramedic and anesthesia students before and after studying two courses of airway management in the department of clinical technology. Methods: A model for measuring, comparing, and analyzing the fields of knowledge about skills and experiences obtained by the students is prepared. Students are enrolled from the emergency medical service and the anesthesia department of clinical sciences at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah Al-Mukarramah. Results: Psychomotor skills were the most important domain among students in EMS department, followed by airway compromise knowledge, intention or attitude, and effective communication.

Objective The purpose of this study was to discuss the clinical outcomes and complications of treating venous malformations with sclerotherapy, with sodium tetradecyl sulfate as the sclerosing agent. Study Design Case series with planned data collection. Setting Amiralam Hospital—a referral otolaryngology–head and neck surgery hospital affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Subjects and Methods A total of 345 patients with venous malformations were treated with sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulfate 3% (1 mL for every 1 cm3 of the lesion). The venous malformation location, treatments before the current sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulfate, the number of sclerotherapy sessions, and complications resulting from sclerotherapy were recorded. Follow-up assessments were done for a minimum of 1 year following the procedure. A favorable outcome was defined as a 50% decrease in the lesion size based on clinical and radiologic assessments. Results A total of 759 injection sessions were documented, ranging from 1 to 6 injections per patient (mean = 3.1). The follow-up duration ranged from 12 to 84 months (mean = 55 months). Based on clinical assessment, a 50% reduction of size was reported for 95.6% of the patients. According to the imaging before and after the procedures, a 50% reduction of size was seen among 67.3% of the patients. Conclusion The results of the study showed that the use of sodium tetradecyl sulfate as a sclerosing substance can effectively reduce the size of venous malformation lesions.

Introduction. Neurosurgical emergencies are complex tasks. The current learning environment limits students’ ability to manage acute neurosurgical emergencies due to legal and safety concerns. Simulation provides an opportunity to participate in the care of neurosurgical emergencies and develop clinical decision making skills. Aim. We aim to determine whether neuroscience simulation curriculum improves student ability to: manage a critically ill patient, recognize neurosurgical emergencies, to assess how stress tolerance affects experience during simulations and effectiveness of students performance. The third objective is to develop a tool for student assessment.Material and Methods. The simulation was performed on SimMan 3G Human Patient Simulator (Laerdal Medical). Scenarios included common neurosurgical emergencies. Students were assessed before and after the course by completing a Likert type questionnaire. Response data was analysed using Cronbach’s reliability for Likert-type response data  and Spearman's monotonic correlation. Results. 60 students of fifth and sixth year of medical studies attended the course. 39 students of them replied to the questionnaire. The simulated clinical experience was positive and it improved their knowledge about neurosurgical emergencies. There was an improvement in their confidence. Improvement in individual and team performance was also observed.Conclusions. Neurosurgical simulations improve students` ability to recognize neurosurgical emergencies. The level of stress related to simulation is important factor of the education process and should be reduced to improve students’ development. Our questionnaire is an effective tool for assessment of students experience during clinical simulations.

Introduction: Performing dental practices in the oral environment leads to the transmission of microorganisms in saliva and blood to working surfaces and dental devices and their infection. Preventing transmission of infection through these devices is an important task of a dentist. Hence, this research was conducted to evaluate the disinfection quality of the dental faculty units of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (AJUMS) in Iran.Materials and Methods: In order to evaluate the quality of disinfection of the units, sampling was performed from all glasses spittoon surfaces of 90 units of the clinical unit of the AJUMS dental faculty before and after disinfection by personnel. Then, the bacteria were cultured in a medium and examined.Results: The mean (and standard deviation) of the total infection of units of the dental faculty was 46534.4 (583380.4) colonies per 1 ml before disinfection and 40265.6 (52131.1) colonies per 1 ml after disinfection, reflecting significant decrease in number of bacterial colonies after disinfection (P &lt;0.001). In addition, a significant decrease was seen in the number of bacterial colonies in the restoration, pediatric, orthodontic and diagnosis units (p &lt;0.05), but the difference before and after disinfection was not significant in the prosthetic, endodontic, surgical and periodontal units. In addition, the most common types of microorganisms in the whole units of the dental faculty were pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus, respectively, and after disinfection, the most common types of microorganisms were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus, respectively.Conclusion: In general, this study showed that the disinfection method of units in dental faculty can not reduce the severity of infection of the units. Given what was stated, it is recommended that the method and the substances used to disinfect the unit to be changed.
