This paper investigates the impact of CSR disclosure and CEO integrity on earnings management. Analyzing a dataset of 750 firm-year observations of 150 Vietnam listed firms during the period from 2014 to 2018, the paper shows a significant positive effect of CSR disclosure on earnings management and a significantly negative impact on the CEO integrity on earnings management. The result confirms the previous studies that companies with more CSR disclosure are likely to engage in earnings management through increasing discretionary accruals. This suggests that managers may use CSR reporting to camouflage their earnings-management activities. Furthermore, the findings add to the literature of determinants of earnings management by offering an insight into CEO integrity and come to the proposal of enhancing the CEO role to control the earnings activities.

This study aims to explore the impact of family ownership on the relationship among corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earning management (EM) in Pakistan. Data is collected from nonfinancial listed firms on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE) for the period 2009-2017. Our results of pooled ordinary least square regression indicate that CSR has significant negative impact on EM. Furthermore, results also indicate that association between CSR and EM is moderated by family ownership. Family firms which perform CSR activities are less involved in EM as compare to nonfamily firms perform CSR activities. This variation in behavior of EM in family and non-family firms can possibly be explained by socioemotional wealth theory. Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure on the financial performance of Islamic banks across nine countries as major markets that contribute to international Islamic bank assets (Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, Bahrain and Pakistan or further will be called QISMUT + 3 countries). Design/methodology/approach Islamic Social Reporting Disclosure Index (ISRDI) is being used as a benchmark for Islamic bank CSR performance that contains a compilation of CSR standard items specified by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions. The secondary data is collected from the respective bank’s annual reports and it used the regression analysis techniques for statistical testing. Findings This study found that CSR disclosure measured by ISRDI has a positive effect on financial performance. Almost all ISRDI sub-major categories have a positive effect on financial performance except the “environment” subcategory. The highest major subcategory for ISRDI is the “corporate governance” category (82%) and the “environment” category (13%) is the lowest. For the UAE, Kuwait and Turkey, the ISRDI is positively affected by financial performance and the other countries on this research are not. Originality/value This study highlighted the economic benefits of social responsibility practices as a part of business ethics in nine countries that uphold the value of religiosity. Thus, the development of the results of this research for subsequent research is very wide open.

This study aimed to test how corporate social responsibility (CSR) can affect the impact of corporate financial distress on earnings management. Based on the existing literature, distressed firms tend to hide their financial crises through earnings manipulation. However, as CSR can positively affect companies in terms of performance, risk reduction, and market response, the better a firm’s CSR is the less managers will attempt earnings management even if they experience temporary distress. Consistent with the literature, test results using Korean-listed companies show that distress increased earnings management, and we confirmed that CSR weakened the positive effect of distress on earnings management. After testing each of the CSR subcategories, significant results were found mainly on environmental performance, reflecting the globally increasing interest in environmental issues. This study contributes to the literature on distress and earnings management, which rarely considers CSR as a moderating factor.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of board model and board independence on corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure of multinational corporations (MNCs). Design/methodology/approach The authors developed an empirical model in which CSR disclosure is the dependent variable and board model (two-tier vs one-tier), board independence (a proportion of independent directors on a board) and the interaction variable of board model and board independence together with several variables conventionally used as control variables are independent variables. The authors collated the panel dataset of 244 Fortune World’s Most Admired (FWMA) corporations from 2005 to 2011 of which 117 MNCs use the one-tier board model, and 127 MNCs use the two-tier board model from 20 countries. They used the random-effect regression method to estimate the empirical models with the data they collated and also ran regressions on the alternative models for robustness check. Findings The authors found a significantly positive effect of a board model on CSR disclosure by MNCs. Two-tier MNCs tend to reveal more CSR information than one-tier MNCs. The results also confirm the significant moderating impact of board model on the effect of board independence on CSR disclosure. The effect of board independence on CSR disclosure in the two-tier board MNCs tends to be higher than that in the one-tier board MNCs. The results do not support the effect of board independence on CSR disclosure in general for all types of firms (one-tier and two-tier board). The impact of board independence on CSR disclosure is only significant in two-tier board MNCs and insignificant in one-tier board MNCs. Practical implications The authors advise the MNCs who wish to improve CSR reporting and transparency to consider the usage of two-tier board model and use a higher number of outside directors on board. They note that once a firm uses one-tier model, number of IDs on a board does not matter to the level of CSR disclosure. They advise regulators to enforce an application of two-tier board model to improve CSR reporting and transparency in MNCs. The authors also recommend regulators to continue mandating publicly traded companies to include more external members on their boards, especially for the two-tier board MNCs. Originality/value This paper is the first that investigates the role of board model on CSR disclosure of MNCs.

The purpose of this study is to obtain empirical evidence whether leverage has a positive effect on earnings management, whether the company size and social responsibility disclosure has a negative impact on earnings management, whether the company size has a positive impact on social responsibility disclosure, and whether the social responsibility disclosure can mediate the impact of company size on earnings management. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling and Smart PLS 3.0 was used for data processing. Research during the 2017-2019 period on 72 companies shows that leverage does not have a positive impact on earnings management, company size has a negative impact on earnings management, company size has a positive impact on social responsibility disclosure, social responsibility disclosure has no negative impact on earnings management, and social responsibility disclosure cannot mediate the impact of company size on earnings management.

The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between Audit Committee Multiple-Directorships and earnings management. Precisely, we empirically investigate the effect of the multiple directorships held by audit committee directors on the level of earnings management of listed French companies. Our investigation has been achieved on a sample of 88 non financial French listed firms that belong to the SBF 120 index, for the financial year 2008. The results suggest that the accumulation of several outside directorships by audit committee members may lead to a higher degree of earnings management, as measured by the magnitude of discretionary accruals. Therefore, our findings show that audit committee cant provide effective monitoring of earnings management when its members held many additional outside directorships.

A prominent claim within the literature is that corporate social responsibility-disclosured firms are fundamentally more resilient to financial shocks, relative to firms that take no corporate social responsibility action. To test this, we examine the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) information disclosure on financial constraints (FC). Our sample is composed of A-share publicly listed firms from Shanghai and Shenzhen in China during 2013–2017. We find that CSR disclosure influences negatively financial constraints. The quantile regression results also indicate that the influences would more obvious when a company faces stronger financial constraints. Further, CSR disclosure influences negatively financial constraints in financially opaque firms, and the effect of financial opaque on the relationship strengthens when the company faces great financial constraints. After considering the problems of missing variables and endogenous, changing the level of CSR and FC measurement, using 2SLS and two-step GMM methods, the conclusion is still robust. However, the results should not be generalized, since the sample was based on 434 A-share publicly listed firms for 2013–2017. From the perspective of FC, this study contributes to the literature in the field of CSR and expands the empirical research on the economic consequences of CSR. It also can encourage enterprises to voluntarily disclose social responsibility information and it is of great significance to promote the stable development of the capital market and society.

The paper empirically explores how firms’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosure varies according to their ownership structure. Three different kinds of ownership structures are considered: family firms (FFs), state-owned firms (SOFs) and firms with dispersed ownership (DOFs). It is the first study examining the relationship between CSR disclosure and ownership structure, which includes in the analysis also FFs and SOFs. The analysis is provided on a sample of 192 listed firms with reference to Italy, a suitable setting for the purpose of the study due to the considerable presence of both FFs and SOFs. Firstly, a content analysis on the CSR documents disclosed by the 192 firms is provided and then data are empirically analysed to test whether the ownership structure influences a firm’s CSR disclosure. Results show that FFs and SOFs disclose less CSR information and the explanation can be found in the lower level of agency problems they have to face. The paper contributes to the stream of literature about CSR disclosure, because it argues that the contents of CSR disclosure vary according to firm’s ownership structure and also to those about FFs and SOFs because it shows that the presence of a concentrated ownership lowers the level of CSR information disclosed.

This study investigates discretionary earnings management practices, tracing the changes over the years in selected top performing and highly liquid listed Indian firms. It empirically measures the impact of corporate governance, financial legislation and global reporting standards on the firms’ earnings management practices. The study analyses a sample of 712 firm-year data comprising 89 listed Indian companies across 7 different sectoral indices of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) over 8 years (2011–2018). The Modified Jones model was used to compute Discretionary Accruals to measure Earnings Management based on data obtained using Bloomberg terminals. Statistical results and plots generated in Stata offer evidence that instances of earnings management have significantly reduced after the enactment of the Companies Act 2013 and the adoption of Indian Accounting standards which are converged with the IFRS. Findings suggest that services firms are engaging in relatively higher levels of earnings management compared to manufacturing firms. This study reveals the positive impact of improved corporate governance, regulation, and enforcement by significantly reducing the levels of earnings management among listed firms in India.

Purpose The paper aims to re-interpret the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in limiting the extreme practices in earnings management (EM) by using evidence from large UK companies. Design/methodology/approach The study has used content analysis and disclosure index to measure the level of CSR. The authors measured EM based on discretionary accruals by using cross-sectional version of the modified Jones model. Findings The findings of this study reveal that companies with a higher commitment to CSR activities are less likely to manage earnings through accruals. Originality/value This study shed more light on the potential impact of CSR on earnings management in the context of the UK. Prior research on the impact of CSR on earnings management has used exclusively CSR scores, provided by CSR score indices. The manual measurement used in this study for CSR (disclosure index/content analysis) is considered to provide a more detailed and precise measure.
