This paper presents a visual conceptual model for the qualitative research approach referred to as phenomenography. The static and recursive stages of a rigorous phenonemographical approach to research are outlined in detail. Using the example of a research study situated in pre-service teacher education, the authors explain how the fifteen distinct steps of phenomenographic research should be addressed with attention to the sequencing of these steps to support reliability and rigor of the research process and validity and generalizability of the outcome spaces that may result from the use of phenomenography.

ABSTRACT Teacher education can take place in multiple spaces besides the school environment (university and basic education schools), following different paths and in a decolonial way. Having this in mind, a qualitative research with an interpretative scope was conducted during a year and a half, on the range of the English project of the National Pre-service Brazilian Teacher Education Program (Pibid) at a federal university in Brazil. In this article, the focus is on the analysis of pre-service teachers’ field diaries and their content concerning one of the activities developed as part of the project: going to the movies and reflecting upon some films. The experience revealed how pre-service teachers had the chance to reflect on the relationships they were able to establish with teacher education, and the readings and experiences provided by Pibid, thus corroborating the importance of decolonizing practices.

Thus, efforts to increase the reflective abilities of students does not meet these expectations, need to be implemented and measured scientifically. With the aim of seeing the process, the response and the effect of the use of journal writing lectures on Civic and Pancasila Education (PPKn), this research will be done by using a mix methods with exploratory research approach. From the research it can be concluded that there is a development of reflective abilities of students. The response of the students showed enthusiasm and motivated them to develop their understanding and skills as a prospective teacher. The study recommends to utilize Class Journal as well as media and learning strategies of innovation in lectures.

This qualitative multi-case study investigated thre exemplary pre-service teacher education programs in Jamaica and Michigan in order to provide an account of how they are structured in different contexts of tertiary institutions and, to identify how they ensure that their graduates are prepared to function effectively in today’s schools. Five categories of stakeholders across the three institutions were interviewed regarding their perception and expectations of pre-service teacher education in general as well as in the context of their program. The responses from these persons were described in narrative form, then analyzed and compared based on the similarities and differences that existed among them. The analysis led to the emergence of various themes across the three institutions, and these were used to draw conclusions relative to the structure of pre-service teacher education. The findings revealed eight distinguishing features of exemplary/effective pre-service teacher education programs whether university or college-based. (a) coherent program vision (b) cultural competence (c) collaborative partnership (d) contextualization (e) quality standards (f) well-planned and implemented field experiences (g) continuous assessment (h) experienced committed faculty and (i) a harmonious blend of theory and practice. To be effective, pre-service teacher education programs must prepare prospective teachers to adequately meet the challenges of teaching in today’s classrooms. To effect change, quality teachers are needed, and to produce quality teachers, quality preparation is a necessity.
