Eileen Chang was one of the most unique and distinguished voices in early twentieth century China. Focusing mostly on intricate family and romantic relations in the colonial and urban settings, her early works bridge the divide between tradition and modernity by infusing the Chinese vernacular fiction tradition with modern sensibilities. Her bilingual writings in English and Chinese present a fascinating case study for cross-cultural translation in the context of immigration and Chinese diaspora. Eileen Chang grew up in a distinguished family of prominent politicians and military leaders during the last dynasty of imperial China. Many myths and memories about her famous ancestors would find their way into Chang’s essays, short stories, and novels. But the part of the family history that most affected Chang was the discord between her parents due to the divergent paths they had chosen between tradition and modernity. Her mother, a prototypical New Woman, left China when Eileen was two years old, and sojourned in Europe for a number of years.

This article is a family history that supported the relationship between slavery and generational wealth. The research documented the history of two Moffett families who were probably not related biologically—a White one who owned a Black one with the same last name. However, the two family histories revealed a larger and more complicated narrative about the origins and intractable roots of American inequality that follows the trail of my slave ancestors to one of the most well- known and wealthiest international corporations in the world—from cotton to Coca-Cola. This is the account of a set of conditions that, while assisting Whites to acquire generational wealth, prevented Black people from doing the same. The piece discusses how generational wealth is accumulated and maintained and argues that higher education alone has provided limited opportunities for Black families to acquire and maintain generational wealth. Recommendations included attention to individual and institutional racism, particularly the structural factors that White families have used to leverage their income and wealth, notably government programs, political and social contacts, access to financial resources, and privileged information about economic opportunities.

Study Objective: To present the modern pattern of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in infants and toddlers and to systematise diagnostic criteria. Study Design: retrospective case study. Materials and Methods. We conducted a continuous retrospective analysis of 45 medical records (for 2018–2020) of children aged from one month to 2 years old with confirmed UTIs. Authors used a set of complaints, past history, clinical symptoms dynamics, and laboratory and instrumental test results. Study Results. 91.1% (n = 41) of infants and toddlers hospitalised to Nephrology Unit at Children’s City Clinical Hospital No.9 of Ekaterinburg with UTIs had structural anomalies in their urinary system, and 35.5% (n = 16) of cases were associated with a family history. Most common symptoms of UTIs were fever and pale skin in 55.5% of patients, sub-orbital cyanosis in 48.8% of patients, and unrest during urination in 37.8% of patients. One quarter of cases were asymptomatic; the condition manifested itself through leukocyturia and bacteriuria. Laboratory test results were used to diagnose leucocytosis with neutrophilia in 26.6% of patients; and the increase in erythrocyte sedimentation rate correlated with C-reactive protein levels (r = 0.57; p < 0.05). We managed to identify opportunistic pathogens only in 33.4% of cases. One third of children had manifestations that are characteristic of cytomegalovirus infection (CMVI): prolonged subfebrile condition, hepatomegaly, normochromic anemia, monocytosis up to 13% (10.9–14.02). Conclusion. In infants and toddlers, UTIs are caused by structural abnormalities of the urinary system, a family history and are characterised by a certain set of clinical and laboratory signs. In order to expand diagnostic capabilities, we recommend including PCR tests for identifying cytomegalovirus DNA from body fluids of a child (blood, saliva, urine) and ELISA testing of serological markers of the virus. If markers of CMVI replication are found, the treatment protocol should be personalised to achieve stable clinical and laboratory remission. We report a case study of a woman with Septic Shock who attended Psychological Intervention after medical treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of a Greek Teaching Hospital in Athens. Qualitative analysis of data was collected from Focused Interview, Genogram as a family history tool and Psychological Intervention based on Short/ Systemic Psychotherapy. The study focuses on the deep understanding of the patient’s changes in terms of thoughts, emotions and behaviors after the invasion of a serious disease, like Septic Shock.
