The Australian Feeding Infants and Toddler Study 2021 (OzFITS 2021) is a nationwide survey of Australian caregivers’ infant and toddler feeding practices. Here, we describe breastfeeding rates and duration, use of breastmilk substitutes, and introduction of complementary (solid) foods, including common food allergens. Caregivers (n = 1140) were recruited by a digital marketing company and were interviewed using a structured telephone questionnaire to obtain information. Breastfeeding was initiated in 98% of infants, but the duration of exclusive breastfeeding to six months was less than 1%. Nearly 40% of children continued to receive breastmilk beyond one year, with 10% of toddlers receiving breastmilk at two years. One-quarter of infants were introduced to solid foods between 4 to 5 months, and nearly all infants had received solid foods by 7 months. New guidelines encourage the early introduction of potential food allergens to reduce the risk of allergy, and by 12 months, over 90% of children had been given eggs and peanuts. One-third of children received no breastmilk substitutes during their first year. One-third of infants first received breastmilk substitutes following birth and before discharge from the hospital. Of these infants, 30% ceased breastmilk substitute use after discharge. Our findings suggest a high rate of continued breastfeeding with 44% receiving breastmilk beyond 1 year. One approach to increase the duration of exclusive breastfeeding is to reduce breastmilk substitute use while in hospital.

Sensing subjective hedonic or emotional experiences during eating using physiological activity is practically and theoretically important. A recent psychophysiological study has reported that facial electromyography (EMG) measured from the corrugator supercilii muscles was negatively associated with hedonic ratings, including liking, wanting, and valence, during the consumption of solid foods. However, the study protocol prevented participants from natural mastication (crushing of food between the teeth) during physiological data acquisition, which could hide associations between hedonic experiences and masticatory muscle activity during natural eating. We investigated this issue by assessing participants’ subjective ratings (liking, wanting, valence, and arousal) and recording physiological measures, including EMG of the corrugator supercilii, zygomatic major, masseter, and suprahyoid muscles while they consumed gel-type solid foods (water-based gellan gum jellies) of diverse flavors. Ratings of liking, wanting, and valence were negatively correlated with corrugator supercilii EMG and positively correlated with masseter and suprahyoid EMG. These findings imply that subjective hedonic experiences during food consumption can be sensed using EMG signals from the brow and masticatory muscles.

We assessed associations between infant diet (e.g., breastfeeding and introduction to solid foods) and DNA methylation in infancy and childhood. We measured DNA methylation in peripheral blood collected in infancy (9–15 months of age) in 243 children; and in a subset of 50 children, we also measured methylation in childhood (6–9 years of age) to examine persistence, and at birth (in cord blood) to examine temporality. We performed multivariable linear regression of infant diet on the outcome of methylation using epigenome-wide and candidate site approaches. We identified six novel CpG sites associated with breastfeeding duration using an EWAS approach. One differentially methylated site presented directionally consistent associations with breastfeeding (cg00574958, CPT1A) in infancy and childhood but not at birth. Two differentially methylated sites in infancy (cg19693031, TXNIP; cg23307264, KHSRP) were associated with breastfeeding and were not present at birth; however, these associations did not persist into childhood. Associations between infant diet and methylation in infancy at three sites (cg22369607, AP001525.1; cg2409200, TBCD; cg27173510, PGBD5) were also present at birth, suggesting the influence of exposures other than infant diet. Infant diet exposures are associated with persistent methylation differences in CPT1A, which may be one mechanism behind infant diet’s long-term health effects.

Although dementia can disrupt many bodily functions, there are ways you can help your loved one and yourself. Determine the cause of any falls and work proactively to prevent future ones. If their walking is impaired, work with a physical therapist to improve it. To reduce incontinence, use a toileting schedule, decrease fluid intake before bed, and plan ahead when you go on outings. Make meals more enticing by increasing the flavor and spice of food. Use heavy silverware and mugs to dampen tremors. Improve swallowing and reduce choking by altering the consistency of solid foods and liquids and consider a swallowing evaluation. Reduce the difficulties inherent in activities requiring skilled or complicated movements to the extent possible. Lessen scratching and picking by treating medical problems and dry skin; cover the arms if needed.

AbstractBackgroundGut microbiomes can vary across development, a pattern often found for insects with complete metamorphosis. With varying nutritional need and distinct opportunities for microbial acquisition, questions arise as to how such ‘holometabolous’ insects retain helpful microbes at larval and adult stages. Ants are an intriguing system for such study. In a number of lineages adults digest only liquid food sources, while larvae digest solid foods. Like some other social insects, workers and soldiers of some ant species engage in oral-anal trophallaxes, enabling microbial transfer among siblings. But do queens, the typical colony founding caste, obtain symbionts through such transfer? Does this enable transgenerational symbiont passage? And does the resulting partner fidelity promote the evolution of beneficial symbionts? Furthermore, how might such adult-centric biology shape larval microbiomes? To address these questions, we characterized symbiotic gut bacteria across 13 species of Cephalotes turtle ants, with up to 40-million years of divergence. Adding to the prior focus on workers we, here, study underexplored castes and stages including queens, soldiers, and larvae, by performing 16S rRNA qPCR, amplicon sequencing, and phylogenetic classification.ResultsWe show that adult microbiomes are conserved across species and largely across castes. Nearly 95% of the bacteria in adults have, thus far, been found only in Cephalotes ants. Furthermore, the microbiomes from most adults exhibit phylosymbiosis, a trend in which microbiome community similarity recapitulates patterns of host relatedness. Additionally, an abundant, adult-enriched symbiont cospeciates with some Cephalotes. Evidence here suggests that these partner fidelity patterns extend from transgenerational symbiont transfer through alate gyne dispersal and subsequent colony-founding by queens. Like adults, larvae of Cephalotes species exhibit strong microbiome conservation. Phylosymbiosis patterns are weaker, however, with further evidence elevating environmental filtering as a primary mechanism behind such conservation. Specifically, while adult-enriched symbionts are found in most larvae, symbionts of older larvae are highly related to free-living bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae, Lactobacillales, and Actinobacteria.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that both partner fidelity and conserved environmental filtering drive stable, stage-specific, social insect symbioses. We discuss the implications for our broader understanding of insect microbiomes, and the means of sustaining a beneficial microbiome.
